To be fair- quality of many foodstuffs worldwide is nearing disgusting levels. I am reading Medium Raw by Anthony Bourdain at the moment and eeek what an eye opener especially with regard to what Americans are eating. It is not all gloomy but this type of situation is by no means unique to Spinneys/Dubai. I do agree though that chicken in Dubai for the most is an abysmal affair.
Its the same as waitrose..if you look at the size of the chicken breasts on " black trays" in comparison to the whole chickens you would realise that the breasts have been pumped full of water to make them bigger! Gross.
I never buy chicken unless its a whole chicken..or the normal size thighs and wings. Even so in the uk i never used to buy the sainsburys / tescos value chicken - so sometimes i wonder why i bother here. scares me to think how the little things have been looked after - or not so the case maybe - sorry rant over - have a thing about chicken lol
or stick to local fish from the fish market.... sad really, I love chicken..
ps: I also got a Spach chicken from Spinny's yest and blamed the crook taste on my cooking... not anymore...
Bangkok - The United Arab Emirates has approved imports of halal cooked chicken products from Thailand, which now hopes to export 3.5 billion baht (104 million dollars) worth of chicken to the Middle East next year, media reports said Saturday.
The UAE's approval of 24 chicken slaughter houses and 36 chicken processing factories in Thailand
UAE also certified the quality of Thai cooked chicken products to be exported to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE, and the Sultanate of Oman,' TNA said.
Arab countries permit the importing of products from any country approved by any other GCC country member.
Following the UAE approval, Thailand's cooked chicken exports to GCC countries is expected to reach 10,000 tons worth 700 million baht (21 million dollars) in value this year, which will increase to 3.5 billion baht (104 million) in 2008, Thura predicted.
Eeww
The chicken breasts here are definately different, they seem to cook a lot faster and have a fluffy like texture. Now I know this is due to water and fillers being pumped into it. What about hormones? I know strict rules about adding these in other countries but not sure about here. It does bother me that I am putting toxic garbage into my mouth however at the same time I cannot bring myself to pay 100 dhs for a chicken at organic, no matter how good. Dont have enough time to shop at 5 different supermarkets like others do!
Maybe do what I did and just stop buying chicken. It's garbage, it's full of garbage and it's probably not even a little bit good for you. Go for an organic chicken once a month and you'll really enjoy it. ;) Buy at Organics on sale days and it's not so expensive.
The amount of food that is imported to Dubai has increased from 4.3 million tons in 2009 to approximately 6 million tons in 2010,
Food that was imported from countries with emerging economies and developing countries comes to more than 65% of the total amount of food imported to the Emirate of Dubai in 2010.
I would want to know where the food I buy comes from. In the UK all food products have country of origin written on the packaging. I think this is especially important in Dubai as I would not want to be buying produce from a country that does not have health and safety standards.
good point.

Totally agree.
I would also like to know the real Nutritional Value of everything I am eating!

I...I think all the stuff on the 'black trays in Spinney's has been frozen and defrosted, but it isn't that obvious from the packaging.. even though it is called fresh.
...
If it's defrosted, it does always say "Do not re-freeze" (or similar), usually in tiny lettering somewhere on the back.
All of that pre-packed 'fresh' chicken at Spinneys (spinneys labels, black trays, vacuum packed) is pumped with water and fillers to plump it up and make it 'tender'. Just look at the ingredients list! Frightening.
If you really want to eat chicken, spend the extra every now and then on chicken from Organics. At least you know what you're getting.
I think most of the chicken here is such poor quality, but normally edible.. (anyone have any good chicken-source shops to buy from to share)

If only I could become veggie.. no will power!
You've got me worried now, I cooked chicken for our tea last night, a special from Spinneys with mozzarella over it, and all day today I have had major stomach cramps! Hope it's not linked:(
Ah I see, sorry. Still letting the manager know the produce is not "nice" even is feedback! You never know they may change their ways, I'm sure they're not going to get positive feedback on such an item.
the chicken wasn't off, if was the actual chicken and what had been done to it in the preparation - I think they must have added / pumped water and thickening agent et cinto the mean to make it weigh more, as the consistency / texture wasn't even right
I will call Spinneys - just can't face the 'thank you ma'am' as i make my complaint, that I know will go nowhere..
To be fair Spinney's can't always control how they were transported. I've always return dodgy produce to them (twice for chicken), spoken to the manager, and they have replaced asap, and (hopefully!) taken the feedback on board. I appreciate you've no doubt tossed the packaging but I'd still go to the branch and let them know there was a problem.
