Hello all!
I arrived in Dubai last week and I am feeling a little lost! I am here for 3-6 months on a work placement, sadly there seems to be little going on within the work place for social events so I was wondering if anyone on here had anything to offer?

I work 8 - 6 Sun-Thurs so your monday morning coffee meet up's are no good. I am a 26 year old female Engineer, just looking for some information and/or companionship.

I could do with someone to show me around a few places (or just adivise on here!) I'm interested in seeing the less commercial side of Dubai, I'm not really interested in the expensive shopping malls (though I will make sure I visit them just to take a look!)

I am based in Bur Dubai, so any information on things near here would be most useful!

Thanks

Angela

By the way, I'm from the UK.

I'm thinking of going out for a meal tonight, Is it normal/acceptable for a woman to go out to eat on her own?

Welcome to the sandpit Angela. What are your hobbies? Where are you from in the UK? Do you have any friends of friends/friends of family living out here? Have you looked at the timeoutdubai listings? Enjoy your stay - this is a fabulous city :)

Hi Angela, welcome to the summer in Dubai! Do you dance? As a meeting opportunity, there is Tango Dubai (on FB). They have Argentini Tango classes and milongas throughout the week - so plenty opportunity to also socialize with professional people. Want to know more - do let me know...

Welcome Angela-I am in Bur Dubai too and there is plenty to see and do-I often go down the Creek at night for walks-just dress conservatively or you will get looked at-otherwise it is fine for a woman alone-you can watch the dinner dhows, visit the bastikia area-bargain in the textile markets-take the 1 dh abra across to the gold and spice markets-I do all this at night with no problems. Also take a walk in the opposite direction down to Karama-home of the genune fake handbags and other things. You can eat in some wonderful streetside Indian and Arabic restaurants and watch the world pass by. I am sure there are people way closer to your age than I am to show you round!

Your long working hours do make it a bit difficult, but you should be working less hours during Ramadan. So, In August you will get the chance to try out something new. How do you fancy trying the Hash? Its a sort of running club, although you don't have to run at all, but it has a great social life. The Desert Hash is a mixed hash, and meets every Sunday evening. Just this weekend there was a party on Thursday night, another pool party this afternoon, another social event on Saturday evening and the regular Sunday evening event. Google "Hash House Harriers", there are groups all over the world. Dubai has the Desert Hash, check out the next 'run' on deserthash.org. We meet every Sunday evening an hour before sunset. Good Luck and I hope to see you on Sunday.

I hope you like the site, re meet ups, I didn't do any as based my meets around school get togethers with kids, but I hear good things re the Expat woman ones, also a good idea to meet around an activity you enjoy, so perhaps look up book clubs in dubai if you read and meet people near you who read, or even try and start one in your area if you can ? DUCTAC in Emirates mall runs lots of arty type classes, most people who attend really friendly so that's another way and of course you may get a really good deal joining a local fitness club right now so another way to meet people, good luck again, hope this is of help.
