Buying fabric and getting prom dress made?

Does anyone have any suggestions, please? This is for something which will probably only be worn once, but my daughter has firm ideas and we would like to buy reasonably cheap fabric and then get a dress made up from a picture. Is the textile souk the best place to go for material, or are there better shops in Satwa? Can anyone recommend a good tailor, preferably New Dubai end of town, please?

Having a dress made is an experience. *Fabric 3+ Meters (for a long gown) @ whatever the price might be, Cheap Fabric? maybe 25-40dhs per meter *Tailors @ 200-500dhs for a formal type dress. {Prices vary by day and by Tailor and their schedule *Time and Fuel@ ? (I am sure ExpatWomEn will have lots of varied prices from experience) But, saying she designed and had her Prom dress custom made is an experience she will never get bored of sharing. That is all part of Prom fun. Sometimes, it is much cheaper to buy ready-made clothing but, certainly not the same reward! I designed my own Prom dress and had it made by a design student ( as her class project ;0) long ago. I still remember that as the highlight to my Prom. No one had the same dress or had even seen anything like it and I was prideful sharing it was my design and the fit was perfectly for me. The smile is my Prom photos is the real deal, ear-to-ear in every one. And it was dress. HTH

Hmm, not sure Berna would be cheaper than that, by the time you factor in material etc. Worth checking, but also look in Monsoon, Debenhams etc - especially during sale time you can get some lovely dresses in there.

Thank you both very much for the info, I shall be investigating. We're wondering whether it will really be cheaper to buy the material and get the dress made here than getting it sent from an online shop - it's just I do think 80 quid plus delivery charges is an awful lot for a dress she'll only wear once.. edited by simpleasabc on 01/04/2013

My daughter did this a couple of years ago, we went to Satwa and bought the material from Deepaks I think and then went to Coventry Tailors and he made the dress from a picture. It was very successful and she was happy with the outcome. I am sure if you search on here you will find the directions to Coventry tailors, as I cannot remember which alley it is down!

Hi Simples :) There is a lady in Karama called Berna who usually only makes wedding dresses but you can give her a call and see if she is quiet she may do it (I believe she sometimes does bridesmaids which would probably be similar). Her number is on EW somewhere if you search. She has lots of bridal magazines etc, and you just pick what you like and she copies it. She is fab and very reasonable and would also suggest or source the material for you. Tip, the prom is 2 weeks before it actually is ;)
