So many possibilities to contribute in our own little micro-environment. - Set A/C one degree higher - Keep curtains closed during daytime in bedrooms - Shorten your shower by one minute - Drive 10k slower etc. etc. building a ski-slope more or less is not going to save the planet. We are.

Just by looking at the low number of views to this post about the environment compared to other posts tells a story, needs to be massive public environmental education for all.

The UK makes me laugh. Councils that snoop on households, making sure that they put the right things in the right wheelie bin. A Coke can in the green bin and you're done for! It's a drop in the ocean when you see the number of massive gas guzzlers, over the top packaging and the huge amount of waste over here.

Dubai has a dilemma, while announcing eco initiatives its still building un eco friendly projects like a chilled beach and artificial ski runs, massive malls etc. even Earth Day is celebrated with events that cause thousands of extra vehicles to come out on the roads to view the candle lit displays of toxic petroleum made candles that actually give off more CFC's than an electric lightbulb. If strategy fails to accommodate the needs of the planet over the drive to build and attract business the planet will continue to lose out. There is a lot more individuals can do of course too but as much as many want, the infrastructure has not been set up sufficiently for the general population. It is difficult to find proper recycling options for most people. Towers blocks should have them by law and homes provided with appropriate sorted bins like most first world countries. What is needed is refuse collection recycling programmes where trash is sorted at consumer level by providing houses with dedicated bins for paper, glass or plastic then taken to recycle facilities rather than the mass taken to landfills where toxic polyethylene gas, which could instead be converted into energy, is allowed to slowly leach out, as is the case in Dubai, where not surprisingly along with the biggest everything else, there is the biggest landfill in the region.

Yes you can recycle, but it's still very much a novelty here and much more should be done. If you go to some European countries, almost every brings their own bags to the shop. People bring flasks for take away coffees. Restaurants recycle. The bins for bin collection are half the size of what we have in Dubai and pick up is maximum once a week. People should use less toxins cleaning their homes We all have to start with ourselves, sometimes is easy to blame others , but we are all part of the circle. Just the amount of plastic the supermarkets use to wrap things in the deli. I tell them not to wrap plastic around the plastic container. If I go to a food court, I remove things I will not use like salt and pepper and even the paper sheet on the tray. We are all part of this and it will not help, by removing an indoor ski centre. I do get it that it would be better to offer Dubai as a more sustainable tourist destination, unfortunately people wants theme parks and water parks as part of their holiday and Dubai economy depends on tourism.

Preethihappy did you see there's another even bigger ski slope coming to Dubai... I really wish these developers would start being more imaginative. Dubai could achieve so much more if it offered a bit more diversity in its attractions. Absolutely agree, the reality comes not even close to the expectations and stereotypes people have about this place. With heat and sunshine all year round, the city could be way more innovative and ergonomic. And all this plastic- I really have never seen this much plastic in my life!

Yes Ave Marina it's an absolute shame that a unique part of the world like this can't come up with original unique ideas to showcase how they are working to protect the environment instead of covering the place up with more concrete. Every time I look at Safa Park I could cry.

Sadly in this place there's always a priority to make things look "pretty" without enough thought or emphasis on the environment. Cherpie I'm with you, companies need to provide basic environmental education to their staff - just simple things like every time I buy cheese at Carrefour I have to explain why I don't need a polystyrene tray as well as cling wrap, why can't Carrefour introduce old school greaseproof paper I wonder, never received a reply after posting a note in their suggestion box. We can all make a difference just by declining all bags at the check out of all stores, more often than not the item we purchase can just be popped into our handbag with the receipt. So much we can all do everyday.

http://7days.ae/its-august-and-weve-already-used-the-earths-resources-for-this-year/68420 Getting rid of Ski Dubai would be a great start...... At least Ski Dubai contribute to something positive, people can keep fit there during the summer. Recycling and green energy here is hardly existing. Put pressure on people to use public transport and widen their transport network. People should live closer to work and schools. yeah right...keeping fit, that's hardly what it is used for. It is proven that ice rink and these sort of places destroy the planet. Agreed, travel is a massive problem too...i feel guilty driving everyday. but, here the public transport system is terrible. you can recycle i do every week, i take my glass, plastic, tin to the recycle bins. http://www.footprintnetwork.org/…/ind…/GFN/page/calculators/

I really agree with silvstet, but I do also think it's peoples callous attitudes as well. I often get laughed at for choosing paper over styrofoam as example, and collecting paper for weekly recycle. I see people tossing garbage out of cars on almost a daily basis, even a tissue, why?? Just why. I was used to daily recycle everywhere, and people being quite cognizant about it....monetary fines for glass in rubbish as example, even in your home garbage! But it's a daily reminder you will do something your environment appreciates. And I agree, people do have long commute times for often what I consider not really pressing reasons.
