Commuting from DXB to Ras Al Khaimah?

Hi all, am considering a job in RAK but the hubby works here at the airport so moving to RAK is not an option... currently we live in Tecom but I would imagine driving from Tecom to RAK every day would be a nightmare? Do any of you or your spouses live in Dubai and commute to RAK? The RAK website claims it is 45 minutes drive from the city centre to RAK, but according to some other expat forums it is more like an hour and a half! 3 hours total commute a day is definitely out of the question. But perhaps if we moved to somewhere like Silicon Oasis, then the drive to RAK wouldn't be too bad? Anyone has first hand experience with the commute and how long it takes? Thanks in advance!

It would depend on which of the 3 parts of the FTZ you'd be in. If it's the technology park it's not too bad. It's near Al Hamra and there's a road off the E311 that cuts across to that area. The business park is near the Hilton and the industrial park is way up north, I'd say a good hour and a half from Mirdif, and the traffic through that part of RAK is awful.

Have you thought about Mirdiff? Especially near Mirdiff City Centre? or even Badia, Festival city? Rebat road connects Mirdiff/Badia directly to the Airport and there's no traffic in that direction so your DH could be at work in 15 - 20 minutes. Also you would face a shorter commute time than travelling from DSO. We've travelled a couple of times during peak hours to RAK ( from Qusais) and it's taken my slow driving DH about 1 hour one way.

Thanks a lot for the replies. I guess an hour is not THAT bad (though of course it's not very good either). I've spent a heck of a lot more time commuting on the monstrous transit system in Tokyo, sometimes taking two hours or more each way. So maybe an hour in the comfort of your own car isn't too bad? Yes, I'd hope that going out into RAK in the morning would have no traffic as everyone else is heading in the opposite direction. Princess_I, really not sure if we would be able to move out of Dubai and still qualify for the housing allowance from his company... something I will need to look into. I think they only provide housing for within Dubai itself? Also, if this helps any, the job is in the RAK Free Trade Zone...

I can get from Mirdif City Centre to the roundabout at the end of Emirates road in about 45 to 50 mins, but this is never at peak time. It depends where in RAK you would be based. Somewhere near the school would take another 15 mins from the roundabout, somewhere near Manar Mall or RAK Hilton (beach)an extra 20 mins. There are also roadworks on the main road into RAK city at the moment and I can't see them helping the traffic situation any.

We have a weekend house in RAK and lived there for 6 weeks last year whilst we were between houses in Dubai. We were commuting the other way to you, however, we found it really hard and used to stay in an hotel 1 - 2 nights a week in Dubai to ease the commute. Lots of people do it though, many of our neighbours in RAK commute daily to Dubai, so it's personal choice

Hi Maracas, I used to commute from RAK to Dubai every two days (sleeping over in Dubai one night) (2006-2008). The morning trip to Dubai through Sharjah was a nightmare as was the return to RAK in late afternoons/evenings. However, if you were to live at Silicon Oasis and travelled to RAK in the mornings, I believe you would not take more than 1 hour (up to the outskirts of RAK). Alternatively, you could use the Outer Bypass Road which is a pleasure to travel, and free from heavy traffic. if you can avoid the Sharjah traffic you'll be ok.
