If you want diversity, I recommend you stick with Slough/Stoke Poges (there ARE hidden pockets of niceness - you just need to find them!!), edited by Sugarbeach on 25/04/2011 Just realised, forget my comment about Slough/Stoke Poges...I'm getting this mixed up with the other Berkshire thread. I agree with Moscow about Reading. edited by Sugarbeach on 25/04/2011

I would seriously consider Reading. As Sugarbeach says, it's diverse, with good shops and a very easy commute to both London and Newbury. If you do go for London, you will need to live out to the west to make a car commute do-able . Finding good state schools with places in London can be difficult, but there's no doubt that if you really want the big city vibe, you need London. But don't underestimate the costs and challenges of family life in London. Try and go and have a look at both and try to find out the cost of renting a decent house and the availability of good schools.

I see. If you want diversity, I recommend you stick with Slough/Stoke Poges (there ARE hidden pockets of niceness - you just need to find them!!), Reading is also a nice town to live in and is very diverse and family orientated too. Ealing, nearer London, would also be good place to look into. All the best. ETA - If you've never lived in a small town, let alone a small village with little more than a small shop/post office and a church, and virtually zero public transport, picturesque as it is, village life can be difficult to adjust to. edited by Sugarbeach on 25/04/2011

thnx ladies for all the info. I've never been to the UK before, and I've never lived in a small town before, that's why I think I'd probably prefer London. I have 2 kids, 5 and 3, so good schools is obviously an important issue. We're egyptian muslims, so I'd also be more comfortable in a multi-ethnic city. Thnx again everyone :)

Oh and Newbury/Reading has just gone up in the world socially as our newest soon to be Princess's parents live very near - Live in Newbury and Wills & Kate spot! I know, they're just down the road from our house, and I'm missing all the local Royal Wedding excitement!!

I used to live in Newbury and agree with Sugarbeach, why not live nearer to Newbury than London? Not cheap, but vastly cheaper than London. If you live towards Reading, the trains from there to London are only about 1/2 hr and there are lots of daily commuters. Reading to Newbury is the slower bit of the line. How old are your kids? Boys/Girls? There are some excellent prep schools in Newbury and a good girls independent as well as OK state schools. Where do you come from originally and have you lived in the UK before?

Hello. I lived near Newbury for 20 plus years before moving to Dubai. It's a beautiful part of the world and so easy to get up to London either on the M4 or via rail - just 22 mins to Paddington from Reading. I'd seriously consider living in west Berkshire. :-) I guess all these people with jobs in Newbury are working for an international mobile telecomms company.

There are some gorgeous villages outside of Newbury - if you go onto www.rightmove.co.uk and put in a radius around Newbury and how many bedrooms you need you will get a list of property for rent in the area. there are some lovely country cottages set in cute villages around there but easy commute of around an hour on the train into central London.

Hi Marwaaselim. We just came from a village near Newbury before arriving at Dubai. Any specific reason why you want to live in London and not nearer Newbury? It's certainly much more expensive in London. Commuting by train - the route is Newbury-Reading-Slough-Paddington. Newbury is on the M4 across to London, and easy to get to down from Oxford, or up from Basingstoke/Winchester. Happy to have chat, feel free to call me . Good luck with landing the job!! What's with all these people getting plum jobs in Berkshire and posting on EW? Is Berkshire the new Dubai now...as in living the Berkshire Dream...?:D edited by Sugarbeach on 25/04/2011
