Hi Ladies . I will be babysitting my friend's rabbit for few days and I have no idea how my Pomeranian dog would react to him. Right now that rabbit is in his cage and my dog is only staring at him. Does any of you have experience in keeping rabbits and dogs in the same house? My dog is extremely friendly and even plays with cats ,but I can't take the risk and let the rabbit outside the cage.At the same time ,I don't think its fair to keep the poor rabbit in the cage for 4 days . Please tell if it would be safe...

I'm with Chocs...put the dog away and let bunny have a play somewhere safe that you know you will be able to catch it again! ;) If it's only for a few days, why bother risking injury or stress by trying to get them together?

Why don't you lock the dog away for a while and let the rabbit have a hop about. I am currently pet sitting a rabbit and there is no way I'm letting it and the dog in the same space at the same time, the dog will just chase the bunny. So the rabbit has his hop about time, to stretch her legs.

I wouldn't leave them unsupervised (even to go and answer the door/phone).

You can do a supervised play and see how it goes. All depends if bunny has had experience communing with other animals? You'll need to let the rabbit set the tone. Just be aware they are the devil to catch once they're out, specially if they are normally free roaming and not handled much :) Oh, and best to do they play some time before or after your dog has been fed...bunny will smell meat etc, and while they can get on with carnivores happily, they are less liekly to be freindly with a meaty reminder that they are normally the food. I think the rabbit is feeling more secure this morning . when I opened his cage to pour his food , he wanted to come out .And my dog is just lying down in front of the cage and sometimes goes closer and starts sniffing the rabbit :) I will try to introduce them formally today :)

It would be nice if they could be friends. Could you perhaps left the rabbit out and see what happens, whilst keeping your dog on a lead? That way, if a fight breaks out, you can just pull him away.

I wouldn't chance it.
