Do you give your LO's multivitamin supplements daily?

If so, which one would you recommend please? Why, or how, did you decide to give supplements to your LO's? TIA.

I know that in theory LO's should be getting all their nutrients from a balanced diet, and I have so far resisted going down the supplements route, but now thinking a little bit of cheating is OK given what a fussy eater my 6 yo LO is.

I'm just back from the Drs (again) and was just discussing vitamins with her. My DS isn't a fussy eater, will eat fruit and veg with no problem, has a very varied diet etc, but is constantly sick. She suggested that it couldn't hurt to try him on multivitamins in addition to his balanced(ish) diet. And to be honest, I'm so tired of him being unwell all the time with one thing or another I am definitely giving them a go!

be careful with berries for under ones, they are full of nutients but also quite acidic and can give them a sore tummy/rash. I read recently that to get the best beneifts from berries they shouldn't be eaten at the same time as dairy, so no yoghurt berry smoothies :( and no I don't give multivits, or vit D but I am still breastfeeding and vigilant about outdoor time daily.

Hi MOT. You could but try with the yellow glasses I guess :D I've not thought of that one before....hmmm...lime green food... Manuka honey is supposed to be good for the immune system, but DH thinks it's all hocus pocus. edited by Sugarbeach on 10/10/2011

Thank you ladies. Unfortunately, the like-it or lump it approach doesn't work on mine either.....god knows where she got her stubborn streak from..... From 6months 'til she was a toddler, I was happily cooking my way through the Annabel Carmel meal planner book, religiously freezing cubes and labelling portions for the freezer, and she used to eat it all....my point being that even though she was given a good varied diet from since weaning, she still became a fussy eater...which is not what is supposed to happen according to the books.....And in the last year she has become even more fussy until recently when she had a wake up call and had to go to hospital as an indirect result. Anyway, managed to find some Amazing Grass Superfoods chocolate flavoured powder in Dubai Mall and will mix that into her milk drink plus whatever good stuff (manuka honey, banana etc.) I can manage to sneak in, which she will still drink/eat....I'll look into the other brands suggested here. edited by Sugarbeach on 10/10/2011 High five! Same thing here. My DD would eat Kale and spinach leaves as a baby, and now, I can't even mention the word "green" at the table. I guess I'm buying her yellow glasses to wear at dinner time :D ( hey, it might work!!!!)

Better fresh when you can, but frozen are the second best option! Just thaw them up and offer pureed or mixed up with oatmeal or in a smoothie...:) Organic are always better especially when it comes to berries. BTW what kind of berries can't you find here?? I've seen almost every kind of fresh berry for sale here..... BTW2 (to Sugarbeach), what is "Manuka Honey" good for? Or is it just another type of honey? BTW3 (to all) remember NOT to offer honey to babies younger than 1 year old ( not even the pasteurized version!) edited by MomOfTwins on 10/10/2011

sorry to hijack but someone mentioned frozen berries... can i give these to 7month old DD? She eats a huge variety of fruit and veg at the moment (in addition to yogurt and an occaisional rusk) but the lack of fresh/decent quality berries here has been nagging at me. can i use frozen? if so, whats the best prep? Thx!

I do the same as CM does, they can choose only what I give them to choose from. It would be so good if our kids could come with instructions manual !! LOL..... so, no guilty feelings Hiccup !!

Am I supposed to feel guilty for giving my LO multivitamins?! ;) Wish I could use the "like it or lump it" technique with my LO :( Some moms are lucky to have a non fussy eater! Absolutely NOT!!! No guilt for any Mummy out there, every one of them does their best for their kids!!!!!!!!!!!! ;) Horses for courses and all that! OP asked a question and I answered it that's all...! But having said that, my LO would be fussy if given half a chance, all she would eat is fish fingers and peas if given a choice... she just isn't given that choice... just as I wasn't when I was little... eat this or have nothing. I started early, right from weaning and that's how it has been since! As I said, I'm a big 'ol meany!! ;) edited by Cheeky Monkey on 09/10/2011

No, have never done as I am a mean 'ol fashioned parent and my 3 year old LO eats what she is given, like it or lump it, eat it or go hungry until the next meal so she gets a balanced diet of all she needs....

Yes I have done since she was about 2 years old. Get mine from the Life Chemist. Once she runs out I get her another brand. At the moment she has one that contains all these fishy oils. As long as she eats them I'll give them to her. DD isn't a fussy eater but she's not a massive fan of fish it could be just the way I cook it though.

No, I give them every morning a mix of milk, banana and 1/2 apple since they where very little, and now I'm adding some frozen berries to the smootthie .... they love it ! Sometime ago they didn't want to eat yogurt anymore, so I froze it , and know is not enough ! They never have sweets during the week, but fruits they can have as much as they want, and when I go to supermarket I ask which fruit they would like to have...(no chips or sweets alowed).... it is amazing how works.

Bassetts Early Health vitamins are good. They are soft & chewy vitamins and come in 2 flavors - orange & strawberry. Also recently our doc has recommended Pharmaton Kiddi vitamins - although it comes in syrup. Fyi, I give vitamins to my both kids from the childbirth - at first A+D and after 1 y.o. multivitamins. edited by dramaqn on 09/10/2011

No Well Sue, you are very lucky with the amount of fruit your LO eats. If only mine ate that much fruit, I would not be worrying at all.... True - i've never worried about either of them and we've been very fortunate that they hardly ever get poorly so i've never thought about giving vitamins.. Hope you manage to hit on something she likes soon...

Could you try giving him smoothies sometimes small children don’t like the texture of fruit. I make a tomato pasta sauce with vegetables and puree it so they can’t see or feel any lumps. I also find that if they make their own food they’re more likely to eat it. Thank you ladies. I will try the pureed tomatoe and veg sauce, TH. Today I made chicken meat balls with vegetables, or is it vegetables with a bit of chicken mince? Nope, not a winner. Chocolate flap jacks and banana bread seem to be winners though and will be making these for the lunch boxes.... edited by Sugarbeach on 07/10/2011

I give DS when I remember. He's hardly sick (touch wood) and doesn't eat the greatest so I'm not that religious with dishing them out. I buy them in south Africa but they sound similar to the ones TillyK suggested, they are called Jungle Vites.

I give my children Haliborange fruit softies during the winter as they do alot of sport, I think it gives them that extra boost they need to keep well.

I started giving my DDs vitamines when we moved here, they were 5 and 4 years old. It seemed like a good idea then as they seemed to catch so many colds! They've been having them ever since and I think it realy does help. I wouldn't give them the gummy bear ones or any with gelatine in them as I don't like them having jellies. After looking around for ages DH and I decided on "Nature's Plus Animal Parade" vitamines. They sell them in Life pharmecies, all the flavours are nice except for the watermelon which is not so nice. I was shocked when a doctor prescribed multivitamines for my newborn baby here! DS was 5 days old and I was advised to give him vitamines :\: obviously I didn't
