I was there with some friends and we all had our small dogs with us. I was surprise that they did not have any security guards in the venue. What happened to the little dog could have been easily prevented if they had better monitoring and if they had not allowed the dog without the leash to enter.I feel so sorry for the family who lost their dog. Some people are just completely irresponsibility and as Jadey said , I hope the owners of the big dog will get punished for their reckless action.
The reason these 'dangerous' dogs were let in is because nobody working on the gates was told anything about not letting them in. Two guys with 3 bull mastiffs between them were turned away late in the afternoon but this was after the little dog had been killed.
The dog show has been running for years so I'm surprised the organisers don't have this all worked out. Either ban or muzzle big dogs or 'dangerous' dogs and have people patrolling the site making sure the muzzles are kept on. If they are not, owner and dog should be thrown out immediately. This would also require having people at the entrance who know one dog breed from another - not generally the case yesterday.
My heart really goes out to the owners of the little dog which died. I know the police came so I hope the owner of the other dog is properly dealt with.
I havent gone since I think it was 2006 or 2007 when there was also a bit of an incident. People need to vote with their feet and not support these things because they are sadly just never going to be run properly.
We were in the vicinity of this incident just after it happened too - we heard from witnesses that the dog was not only unmuzzled it was also off the leash. Absolute tragedy that should not have happened. I felt sickened so heaven only knows how the poor family were feeling then and today. We saw the dog owner and dog 'corrralled' by staff and a securtiy guy but then left the area and don't know what happened after that. However the announcement regarding child safety and keeping dogs muzzled/leashed went out quite a while after this happened.
There were a lot of dangerous looking dogs - many of which had spiked collars, how they got in I'd really like to know.
Remarks on the FB page mentions 2 dogs dying. I truly hope that is incorrect.
We also saw/met one puppy that was only 4 months old - wasn't there a 6 month limit and you had to show vaccination paperwork to get in? Plus another puppy being carried that could only have been a few weeks old. I also saw a dog with nasty red sores along it's back and just hope this wasn't contagious.
I'd like to feel able to take my dog next year as she'll be old enough but hope they address the safety issue as a top priority.
Me and my family were there seconds after what happened happened if you know what I mean... we were quite distressed and believed the dog would not survive... but please tell us if the offending dog owner was stopped?.. awful ending to a great day... :(
We couldn't make it this year because one of the kids was heading off on an international school trip and we didn't have time. Hearing this I am pleased we missed it. We have two small dogs and the kids would have been devastated to see this. I won't be telling them either.
"Dangerous Dogs" Should not be allowed Period! I had no idea about the little dog that was attacked! How terrible. I saw people with big dogs that were having trouble controlling them,! Imagine a child had been hurt! I'm not sure I'd just want them muzzled either, if they are dangerous they shouldn't be there imo. I have to say all the little children who came to pet my little dog did ask me first, which was lovely :)
A note to organiser would be .... if they took the time to" Vet test" all the dogs! then they certainly could have refused entry to any dangerous dogs or ones on the banned list for Dxb, no? Also I think they should have told people that these vet checks would take place when advertising the event.
Hi littleone. Didn't mean it to sound like I thought you were having a whine, I just know that posts like this can turn into a big b*tch fest!! And wanted to avoid that happening so thought I could try and divert people in a constructive way :)
I have since heard in a lot more detail about what actually happened yesterday to the poor little dog. I'm not going to write the horrible details on here for people to read but all I can say is that I am disgusted that people like that are allowed to own dogs! I really hope that they have not ruined it for the future for all of the responsible owners!
Rant over! :)
kts, i just reread my post and didnt mean for it to sound like a whinge! I will definitely get in touch with the organizers, thanks for the link, and share my thoughts and I believe the event to be positive for everyone including non dog owners. It's a good family event and great outing for the dogs and helps to socialize them with other dogs which helps to kerb the aggressiveness. Its even better when the weather is so nice.
That is awful to hear about the little dog that got attacked :(
They have a facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pedigreeandwhiskasme?sk=wall Why not post your comments about muzzles, temp checks etc on the page - that way they can take all suggestions into consideration for next year :)
It is such a nice thing to have in Dubai as we all know that it is very hard for you to take your dog out in this country as dogs are not allowed in parks or on beaches. I really hope that the future of the show is not jeopardised due to the incident Yesterday.
Perhaps some constructive criticism will help to keep the event going long into the future.
Although it is AWFUL and heartbreaking news about the poor little dog, I can't help but feel that if everybody becomes irate about the situation then the event will not be allowed to continue, so lets all encourage the organisers to make next year better and safer for all animals and humans by making polite suggestions :)
As far as I am aware owners are asked to take a long their vaccination books and all "dangerous" dogs are asked to wear a muzzle before entry is allowed. However there is nothing stopping the irresponsible owners from removing those muzzles once inside :( unfortunately the organisers cannot keep check on every animal.
We got the lady vet and she did use a alcohol wipe to sterilize the thermometer, but I wasn't impressed (neither was my dog)! She only did every other dog and didn't tell us she was going to do it. I didnt think this years show wasn't as good as last year as the football fields were a great place for the pups to play off lead and no one was really on them because of the incident. Apparently it was a little poodle that was killed. There were a lot of aggressive dogs there and their owners were not able to restrain them adequately, if you know your dogs aggressive put a muzzle on it!
Maybe the organizers should consider a way to have an off leash area but separate the big and little dogs.
Did anyone else go to the dog show yesterday? I took one of my little ones and have to say the venue is soo much nicer than when it was in DFC area. It was good and there seemed to be a lot going on, BUT why didn't they tell people that if they took there dog they would have to have a vet check?! So there were long q's to get in, luckily it wasn't too hot yesterday. The vet in our Q was fine as my boy is a rescue and doesn't like being picked up and fiddled about with. Anyway our one just looked him over and off we went, fine. BUT I noticed the Flilapino (sp?) Vet in the next Q was taking every dogs temp (you know where that happens) and just wiping the thermometer (with what loooked just like a tissue?) and doing the next one! Surely that is very unheigenic (sp)?! I understand they are trying to prevent any sick dogs going in a spreading diseases but maybe owners could just take their vaccination books?
