Can anyone help? I recently realised my UK license photo bit had expired. I am no longer a resident and the DVLA website only makes reference to renewal for residents. Is there a way for me to renew this from overseas?

when you move back to the uk, you just fill in the form to renew and its will be done fine with no problems. you will not need to take your driving test again. Thank goodness for that. After having driven in the Middle East for 6 years I'm sure I've picked up so many bad habits (not to mention swear words and angry gestures) that I probably wouldn't pass first time!! DC hahah iknow what you mean. a friend of mine learnt to drive here, so has a uae licence, has moved back to scotland dont think she has lived there since she was little, her parents were embassy staff, but now she has been back a year, she has to take a driving test..... perhaps after a year she may have lost some of the bad habits. lol

also the uae licence is recognised in other countries. but do check that some companies do charge you more. i was once looking at the difference between hiring a car in the usa under both uk and uae residence and the uae would have cost more, it all depends on what website you use too.

It's a tough one. Be aware that if you give false info you are actually committing fraud to obtain an official document. So long as you have a copy of your original paper license, there aren't any real issues. Have the green part which is valid till I hit 70 so proof that I actually have a licence and also have a UK passport. If I don't renew but decide to move back to the UK at some point in the future will they just re-issue my photocard (given that my green one is valid) or will I have to re-take my driving test? as said before you cannot legally renew your licence even if you still own property in uk. when you move back to the uk, you just fill in the form to renew and its will be done fine with no problems. you will not need to take your driving test again. Chocs01: If they sent it to you in Dubai why are others indicating that you can only get your replacement photocard sent to you if you are a UK resident? I'm really confused now!! DC Sorry let me clarify. NOT a photocard, I don't have one anymore as it expired and I can't get a replacement as I haven't been a UK resident for 8 years. You can only get a replacement photocard if you are resident for 6 months of the year or more. I needed a copy of my original 'paper' license, which is your actual license that is valid for 70 odd years. It's that which they sent a copy of to me. Ah OK then. Well since I have my green paper licence that should be sufficient then if I decide to move countries and need to exchange my UK licence for that of another country. DC

Did they re-send it to the address that was previously on the photocard or were you able to specify a new address? DC LOL no I'd been living here for 7 years, so that address was long gone. They sent it to me here in Dubai. It costs 5 pounds.

Be warned, if you don't live in the UK, are not even British and use a UK licence to hire or drive a car and you have to claim on insurance and they make some enquiries... well effectively you are driving 1). Without a licence as it is technically not valid and 2). With no insurance as you need a valid licence for the insurance to be valid, also they would not pay out. Unlikely I know, a lot of "if's and but's", but if you are a European National driving on a UK licence they are likely to at least ask why and where you [i'>actually[/i'> live...

I am about to do the same thing, I think using a parents address will be ok, only thing that worries me is if they notice the envelope has a foreign stamp on, as only UK residents are meant to apply

You can do it from here online if you have a chipped UK passport and the same UK address as on the expired photocard, as this is where it wil be sent to. Unfortunately I don't own the property that is on my photocard anymore! Was thinking I might use my Dad's address as my new registered address. I have the chipped passport but it might be more difficult if I need to change the address. DC

The same happened to me last year and I have renewed it. Not really meant to but I needed it to get my drivers licence here (my old one UAE had expired and if I had known i could just renew it without my Uk one I would not have gone to the trouble I did to get the UK one). Basically if you have one of the new passports they can renew the photo ID from the photo on record, you just send off you photocard ID with the DVLA form - you may be able to do it online also I think - may be worth checking. If not then you need to send an attested photo and your passport. I was not willing to do that so waited until I went to the UK and had my photo taken at one of larger post offices that has this facility. The new ID ws then sent to my UK address. Took about a week. All of this should only be done if you are resident in the UK of course - I am not but like many other expats risked it. I do not use my UK licence here or in the UK - I use the UAE one. You will to need provide a UK address . There was a long thread recently on this topic with a lot of good information - try a search. Genie: By new passport do you mean one with the scannable (machine readable) 'barcode' on the photo page? Mine was issued in 2005 but has this 'barcode' so would that be sufficient? TIA DC

madolecow, I got my first license in the UK while I was a student there so I do not have any other license other than that one and the UAE's which I do not know if would be recognised back in Europe - need to check this when I go next but this is not til Xmas. In the meantime, I want to explore all avenues to renew the photo portion in it as the license itself does not expire for many more years!

Thanks Genie. Problem is I am not a UK but EU national. Still have friends who live there (UK) but I know DVLA asks for proof of residency i.e. utilities bills etc I saw the thread talking about this issue but there was no answer for my situation ... I was not asked for any proof of residency - but then again maybe that is because I am a UK national?

Well legally you are not entitled to a license and why would you need one? If you need it to renew your UAE license then can you not get your home country license for this purpose?
