Hey ladies.

Quick question.....Hubby and I are thinking of trying to start a family in the not too distant future, but I'd just like to ask, anyone know when you should start taking folic acid?

TIA! :)

Invest in a good women's formula multi vitamin. It should have equal amounts of B1, B2 and B6 - 50 mg is good. The Folic Acid (B9) amount should be 400 mcg. Also make sure that the supplement has calcium and magnesium in a 2 to 1 ratio. Some good brands are Eve, BlueBonnet and now.

The newish Holland and Barrett health store at MCC has quite a few good deals on vit, etc at the moment. And the guy in the store is pretty knowledgable and very helpful. His name is Haroon, I think.

I agree with what you say - but if possible it is good to start on folic acid if you are planning a pregnancy to reduce the risks of spina bifida.

BUT, just in case there are any mums-to-be out there getting worried, if you don't happen to have been/ be taking folic acid supplements, this doesn't mean to say that your baby is going to have problems. Hundreds of thousands of women haven't done everything the Drs recommend (because there're a lot of recommendations!) and have perfectly healthy babies.

If you are diabetic or epilieptic you should take 5mg daily.

There is no danger in taking too much folic acid. This vitamin is not one that accumulates or can cause any adverse effects (for mother or baby) if taken in a high dose. Your body is easily able to get rid of any excess if you have more than you need. The reason that everyone is advised to take a supplement is that even if you eat a balanced diet with fortified cereals and breads it is still difficult to obtain enough folic acid to protect a baby against neural tube defects such as spina bifida. So, it is important to take a regular folic acid supplement containing 400 micrograms daily, and this should be continued until the end of the 12th week of pregnancy.

Thanks ladies - see, I knew Ew'ers would know!! :) Are there any side affects? No, it's a completely natural component in food, the problem is, like many nutrients, the processes our food goes through means that we don't get enough in general. You don't *have* to take it before you conceive (quite a few people don't actually plan to get pregnant or know the exact date they'll do so) but it plays a very important part in your baby's neural development, especially in the 1st 12 weeks. It has been linked to avoiding spina bifida which is a horrid thing and often not viable. I started taking the Pregnacare tablets, which contain it, but only when I was 5 or 6 weeks pg, because before then, I didn't know I was... and it was a bit of a surprise!

Doh, I just wrote a reply then closed the window. It was something like this; I was told at least 1 month before and best to be 3 months. Esp if your dietary intake of Folic Acid is low. I started taking in Dec-Jan and conceived in June. I agree with AmyAus82 and Kristina_rmnv that it does no harm, so start now. All the best! :)

Some people don't start taking it till they are actually pregnant as well.

I read that you can start taking it up to two years before TTC, although that seems a bit excessive if you ask me! I think most people start taking it a couple of months before trying if possible.

My chemist told me to take it whilst on the pill, Cerazette, so like Kristina said anytime, it won't do you any harm.
