Not surprising really to hear of the ailments - when you approach Dubai from the desert you can see a big black cloud of pollution hanging over it - have been living in Fujairah for a year and can smell the pollution as soon as we head back into Dubai Will it put me off moving back here - no way - still love Dubai (and who is going to give up their 4x4 to reduce the pollution - not I, said the cat)

DD was 14mths when we arrived and in the first week she got a bad throat infection, since then she has had little sniffles, colds and one or two sickness bugs but nothing out of the ordinary and these were all within a month or so of her starting nursery (would have expected the same if in UK). She has bit of a cough now and nursery been back a week! ;) On the plus side she does suffer from dry skin/eczema patches and never has that here, but when we were in UK over the summer it flared up again but now cleared up. Generally DH and I have been okay, DH was ill but that something unrelated to his location although I think it took him longer to get over due to general fatigue due to heat, work stress etc.

Fatigue is an issue when we travel here due to jet lag. Takes us all about 8 days to get back on our feet. We also feel fatigue in the hotter months. Shamals or even a smaller dust ups tend to give us the scratchy throat but other than that we're fine health wise. What does get us is the germs the kids bring home from school. We are a melting pot of cultures and are exposed to germs we'd normally not be exposed to. Our immune systems take a beating when we fight those bugs. Spending the year here then going home we are now exposed to new bugs and this year allergies beat us up. We couldn't win at home! Oh well...the odd sniffle or flu is fine. We are blessed to not have major health issues ( knock on wood )! edited by dogcatcher on 26/09/2011

I am in better health here. When I am in my home country, I tend to require allergy medicine to stop constant sneezing. My children's health is equally good wherever we go.

Water-borne, food-borne, parasitic and other infectious diseases are prevalent in Dubai with more serious outbreak occurring from time to time. http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/zw-cgi/view/advice/united_arab_emirates#Health_Issues Dubai is a melting pot of parasites. With a mobile population bringing bugs from all corners of the globe, different levels of hygiene and a hot, humid climate, all kinds of bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites thrive. Despite their proliferation, doctors and patients tend to dismiss or ignore parasites as a factor in chronic disease even though the World Health Organisation puts the number of people into the billions which are estimated to be infected Diarrhea Fever Gastritis Abdominal pain and cramps Nausea and vomiting Bloating and flatulence Irritable bowel syndrome Inflammatory bowel disease Allergy particularly food allergy Fatigue, poor concentration Constipation Skin problems - Rash, **** itching, urticaria Weight loss http://www.lifestyle-uae.com/problem_parasites.htm edited by tally-ho on 26/09/2011

Must admit that thought we would be healthier here than uk as result of weather. DH uses inhaler as much or more than uk, very congested and one of LOs already got cold. Only been here a month. Was thinking about getting aircon system cleaned. Does anyone have any tips/info on this?

My two children cough the minute they put their heads down until they wake up in the mornings. I am almost always congested and feel a lot of fatigue. None of the symptoms mentioned continue when we are away.

I get more stomach upsets here than I did back home. DD1 has become ill since we've been here but that probably would've happened anyway as it was there lurking. On the plus side DH no longer needs an inhaler for dustmite allergy and hayfever - as soon as he got home in the summer his hayfever kicked in with a vengeance but he gets here and he's fine.

Before I begin I should state that I am in Abu Dhabi, not Dubai... I think allergies are an issue for many expats as we tend to live here during most of the year, then frequently go for an annual visit to the home country. So we tend to have established antibodies for both countries (and different allergens in both countries). The long flights slay me, and I suspect are a health risk in that we travel 27 to 32 hours each way annually. Can't be good.

My LO was 2 when we came here and she had small areas of ezcema. They were really bad at first and her wrists were bleeding over here but then started to clear and nothing since - I think the weather here is good for her. We don't have so many colds or bad stomachs really so overall I'd say we were better.

Yes, my asthma - always sort of there, but never a problem unless I spent lots of time with a cat, is now horrible! But what am I doing about it? Sucking on my inhaler!
