Hi Ladies, I'm considering registering my two children with DESS, taking them out of their current school and teaching them myself at home until ,if or when, their names come up. They are due to go into Yr1 and Yr3 in Sept this year. Two questions: Has anyone home schooled their children and regretted it and also if you have ever had your children on the DESS waiting list, how long before their names came up? Any advice/comments very much appreciated. TIA :)

As previous posters have stated, it is getting the transfer certificate may be difficult, but not impossible. There are schools that acknowledge homeschooled children,& we even had a school offer to take our children on part time if we wished, so that we could educated them at home for certain subjects but send them to school for others ( such as group sports, science lab work etc) Best to check with MOE first as things may have changed since we left last year.( though we homeschooled with the intention of not sending them to school in the UAE)

We homeschooled DS for awhile...the issue you are going to have (rules may have changed but this was as of NOV last year) is the transfer cert, which both your kids will need. So you will need to have them enrolled in a recognised home school system, and the only one that is recognised here is the K12 program, which is american curriculum....so if you enrol them that , you will be able to get a transfer cert....your next hurdle will be meeting the requirements for changing from the USA curriculum, back to the UK curriculum, and the KDHA put quite strict requirements on that. It can be done, but you just have to be prepared for it and know where you stand.....so you really need to check this out fully before you embark on this.

There was an article in The National a week or two ago - it mentioned that it was up to individual schools after an extrance exam as to whether they would accept a child who had been homeschooled. Good luck - we will be homeschooling our DS soon - he is sitting his O levels now but as we are Australian the A level options don't suit. We will be following the Australian HSC syllabus via TAFE online learning. DD will be staying at school she is currently yr 6 and sitting her SATS ! Thanks for that. That option at least gives you the choice whether to go back into mainstream or not. Good luck with your son!

Morning ladies, thanks so much for all the tips. ytjones4, did you just home school while waiting for a place in a school? Are you glad you're not doing it now and what was the most difficult thing you found about it. Being very organised and structured is where I would fall down I fear :( TIA

Hi, I homeschooled my kids this past year, year 1 and KG2. I used the Calvert Curriculum (American curriculum) which is associated with an umbrella school in Maryland. The great thing about them is they offer an advisory teaching service, which gives you a "transcript" so to speak. Also, look into K12. They offer a great alternative, and are recognized by the KHDA so switching back into any school is no problem. Let me know if you have any more questions :)

homeschooling was a problem as the moe didnt recognise it, but thinking now they are a little better, there are organisations here now for homeschooling and on facebook best asking them, as the problem before was that if you were not in a proper school there was no transfer certificate and thats what they go on.
