the agency telling you to do it doesn't make it right! i literally can't believe that you people think that it is ok to treat someone like that!

I think I quite clearly stated that the AGENCY advised us to pay her AED 500 and we have this in writing. Incidentally, I know a few family friends who employ Ethiopians and pay them the same because this is the rate they have been advised. I also have another family friend who pays her Ethiopian maid a higher salary because she speaks perfect English and has a few years of experience under her belt. Correct

So just because an agency states u should pay her that, that is ok ? If you are breaking the law u are breaking the law police will not be bothered about a letter what the agency has written. Agencies bring over illegal people all the time. I'm just stating u may be breaking the LAW... Not bothered what you actually pay her.

oh and by the way we of course had to pay for her medical insurance, visa , flight, etc - those were all separate expenses. Doesn't everyone who sponsors a maid?

I live just fine, thank you very much...and incidentally so does my maid. Everyone pays according to what they can afford and this is what the agency suggested I pay. You can be as judgmental and holier-than-thou as you like. It doesn't bother me as I have an arranegment that works quite happily for all parties involved.

I wish I could afford to pay my maid AED 5000 but not everyone can! Our maid lives with us full time and, like I said, she is completely illiterate and had never even stepped on a plane before coming to Dubai. She was not familiar with a fridge, washing machine, microwave or vacuum cleaner so all these things needed to be explained to her until she understood what they were used for and HOW they were used properly. Our maid stays with us 7 days a week but that's not to say she doesn't get any time off. She doesn't know anyone in Dubai , has not expressed interest in venturing out alone and wouldn't be able to deal with taxi drivers, etc. She is quite naive and simple. Instead we always include her in our family outings, be it going out for dinner, movies, swimming, visiting family, etc. I give her clothes and toiletries too and she makes international calls from my phone. She watches telly with us and comes power-walking with me when she feels like it. I know that AED 500 is very low but that is what the agency advised us and because we werent sure 'what we were getting' so to speak we chose to stick to the standard rate! We didn't get to interview or 'select' her. However having said that, she will be getting yearly increments to bump up her salary because so far I feel she definitely deserves it even though it was quite hard in the beginning.

Anyone who pays their maid less than 1000 AED per month should be completely ashamed. It would be modern-day slavery. A lot of people here forget they were just geographicaly lucky enough to be born in a country where they could get a decent education and earn a reasonable living. I pay my lady 5000 AED a month - half my salary. She is paid a bit more because she drives. However, what price can you put on your children? You need someone who will look after them properly while you're at work. And if you don't have children and don't work, why on earth would you need a live-in maid anyway?

I didn't say it was right paying 800 Dhs but it s what some people pay. Don't forget 800 Dhs they think is a good wage, they wouldnt earn that in their own country.2 k is also a rubbish wage for working full time but it's alot to them. My dh never here's the locals complain that there maid absconds or gives them cheek.... They know the non locals are a soft touch so to speak.

I know lots of people with maids I'd say new comer from 1500 per month and experienced around 2 k ....wether they are experienced or new comer start them off a bit lower and say u would increase after so long ... It also depends on whether u say they get all there own stuff like food n toiletries ....or u give them less wage and provide their food and toiletries and phone cards. My dh knows alot of locals who have ephopian maids and they pay them 800 Dhs. None of them pay up to 2 k that's y they all want to work for British American etc That's because 800dhs is an **appalling** wage. Anyone who pays their maid that amount should be ASHAMED. Isamin I don't have a maid but we are looking for one. If you do a search you will find loads of threads relating to salary...from what I have read I would think 1500dhs for the least experienced of your candidates and 1800++ for the more experienced. HTH.

Amalzd I think you will find that the 2,500AED per month covers the following: Bringing the ladies over, medical, visa, trip home per year, training, salary etc. You would provide accomadation for live-in plus food allowence HTH Edit to say agency also provide health card + ID card edited by Bubble on 16/08/2011 Yes this is true agency provides all above for just over 2 k u provide room and food.

Ayda247.... you said the agency said its an average of 500 DHS per month, can you state some details please, I mean does she stay all day and night or specific number of hours and / or number of days? because last time I checked I wanted a girl "but the agency i contacted deals only with Philippines" they asked for 2500 DHS per month if she'll stay at my place for a full month with 1 day off every week !!!!!!

I think it depends on experience as well as nationality unfortunately. For example, when we got our Ethiopian maid from the agency, they told us the standard monthly salary was AED 500. This is lower than what Filipino's get from what I understand. Our maid had never been on a plane before and didn't speak a word of English or Arabic. She is actually illiterate so we couldn't even get her an Ethiopian/English dictionary as she couldn't read or write in her own language. Its been a year now though and she has learned some English and is actually really lovely.

Hi EW I just moved to Dubai and I'm looking for a live-in maid. What is the going rate for a newcomer to Dubai with little experience compare to someone who has lived in Dubai for some time with years experience?
