It's all about making sacrifices. These people leave family and friends behind to try to make more money here in Dubai. I spoke to a taxt driver the other day who is from Pakistan. He hadn't seen his daughter for 6 years because he couldn't afford the flight home. You know that he was lying to you, dont you? He gets flights home either every year or every two years as per his labour contract.

Pomegranate, sorry to sound mena (it's not intended) your cost of living is way higher because you have chosen it to be that way. If you really wanted to save money you would have to do like these people do - send your children home to be cared for by relatives and move into smaller accommodation. These people often do not have a choice. We are very lucky that we do. Paying someone an extra 200 dirhams a month is not going to break anyone's bank who posts on here. And if it does, make a small sacrifice...

I've spoken to taxi drivers who tell me they are 'kings' in their own country with property and businesses, their salary here may be low (on Dubai standards) but then converted back to their own currency they are making loads. Same generally for maids, I know one maid who after five or six years living in Dubai and earning a smallish salary, was able to buy two small grocery shops and a small piece of land - she was 'set for life'. Her salary per month here was about the same as a salary per year in her own country. Although I earn a very good 'western' expat wage, my cost of living is waaaay higher (rent & associated taxes, Salik, DEWA, school fees, food, etc) and converted back to my home country - I could not set myself up for life after five or so years. No way!!! This is great news! And good on them!! I think though our expectations are a lot higher than theirs and what we need/want costs a h3ll of a lot more!!!! We don't accept what they would accept. I think that it's awesome for them to be able to be set for life!

You know, when I first told my Mum I was coming to Dubai, she said 'isn't that where they treat the workers so badly, like slaves??". If we all accept that these wages are sufficient, for ANY category of immigrant here, maid, bagger, McDonald's manager, car washer etc, then nothing will change. Just because they all have such poor wages doesn't make it right! Expats from 1st world countries come here to Dubai usually because a good salary is their carrot. They are offered nice villas, nice lifestyle etc. You came here for 'more'. They are doing the same thing - all of them! Would you come here to work if you were going to earn less or equal given all of the sacrifices you made? For most people, I don't think they would. Then I don't see why it should be the same for them. I don't agree with the wages any of them are paid here, it is scandalous! I can't help every low salary worker here, but I can help ONE! Don't fall into the 'everyone else does it so it's OK' category - make a change! Designbabe, you obviously knew how it felt to earn such a low wage so you know first hand how they all feel. Well said SuzyDuzy !!

And what about those poor girls who work in beauty salons? No days off for many of them- 10 to 10 working hours- many of them tell me sob stories and they get to go home once in 3years. As Anon said- there are many many people in the UAE who work long hours for a pitiful wage. My maid saves more than I did when I arrived here 11 years ago and got piad 3000 dhs all inclusives- from which I had to pay for my accomodation clothes food transport and work 6 days a week from 8 am to 8 pm and usually get paid late....I was lucky if I got 500 dhs a month saved after food and expenses.

The salary for a manager at McDonald's here is 1500 dirhams a month with housing plus transport to and from work included. I know because I asked a manager and she told me. Food and clothes are not included in this salary. A manager at McDonald's is usually a fairly educated and bilingual person. Maids are generally people who cannot offer anything to the workforce in their home countries because they are not skilled. The average salary for a maid in this country is 800 dirhams a month, including food, clothes, housing, toiletries, phone credit, etc. In their home countries, a maid's salary translates to about 2 and a half times the salary of a semi-skilled worker so that is why 800 dirhams a month is deemed an appropriate salary by the government here. Just to go over a few things with you, SuzyDuzy. A maid's average salary in the UAE and the mistreatment of maids by some employers are different issues. Most housemaids are aware before arriving that working as a housemaid entails loneliness. If they want a better social life, they can apply to work as cleaning ladies for companies or for agencies, among other jobs. I am not assuming that all housemaids have nothing to offer to the workforce in their countries but they are classified under unskilled labor here. Most of them have no training to do anything. If they did, they could work as salespeople, fast food workers, waitresses, etc., in this country. Most maids who arrive fresh here are not bilingual. And lastly, why do we always speak of maids and laborers? What about everyone else who makes 800 a month? Mall car washers? Cleaning staff? Baggers?, etc. The majority of unskilled employees in the UAE have no frame of reference when it comes to salaries in the UK.

I can't answer that question and that is a separate issue.

You make a very valid point. However, once the manager leaves for the day, he has his own life. The job is over. I have seen many a maid that is not allowed to talk to other maids, barely get their day off, work endless hours because they are on call literally. My maid has told me some stories about other maids in our area and it breaks my heart. It borders on slavery... I think this is with people have reacted to the low salaries. These women have no family here, no life. You do not know why they came here (for AnonDubai - how do you know they cannot offer anything to the workforce in their country? This is a massive assumption on your part... some come here because they have sick families and they sacrifice to help their family, others, who ARE educated, just can't get a job so they try their luck here). The maids are also bilingual, they have to be to keep up with us expats!!!! When I hired my maid, I had said 1800, her previous employer paid her 2000. She was fine with the new amount. However, after seeing what she does, how she does it, her attitude, her respect, her willingness to learn, I offered her 2000 because she DESERVES it! Now other maids may not deserve it, and I have heard some horror stories, so at the end of the day it is all a personal choice. But just don't forget the misery that they live in. The courage it takes to come here, be separated from your children, just to earn a decent buck! They come here to make a BETTER living? Otherwise they could have stayed at home.... By the way, when I lived in Europe, there was no way I could afford to have a full time maid, so I didn't! I had to make do, this is the frst time ever I have had the pleasure and I APPRECIATE it! I don't take it for granted!

If you can't afford to pay your help a decent wage don't have one... imo.. Easy for you to say. Some ppl earn low (with the husband and wife working) and have to leave their LOs at home. Can you solve this problem? and "decent" is a relative word. Some maids find 500 decent. I'm not defending, i'm just giving facts. why is it easy for me to say ?? And leaving young children with maids instead of qualified child care is a whole other argument lol

I think we should respect people's opinion here. I think how much you pay your maid also depends on how much is your own income! If my salary was [b'>50,000 AED a month I would pay 5000AED to my maid! and If I was paid 5000AED a month I would try to find someone who is ready to work for me for AED 500!! [/b'>we should remember there are some people out there who need to stay here even if we only provide them a home and food since their condition at their home country is devastating! I am not defending anybody here , you know that there are laborers and cleaners here who are paid as little as AED 300 net! with a hopeless accommodation! I pay mine 1500AED plus plus plus, because I can afford only this much and if I could I would pay more to help her. she is lovely and very very happy. There are so many things in life that are not fair! and this is one ! that we can live lavishly and afford a maid and some people have to clean our house and still be happy! I wish we were all given the same! I agree with you completely. Great post!

I thought AED500 was a salary of the past. Shocked that there are maids out there who accept this wage & even more surprised that educated people would pay that little. I think you should increase her wage as everyone has suggested, take it as constructive feedback rather than getting angry about it.

Agency sponsored maids are brought in at 2500+ AED... then 800AED minimum salary was recommended to me 5 yrs back...now our maid gets 2000AED plus perks...like bonus on our festival days; extras for working late nites wen we have parties etc. She takes care of my LO who is 8 now... and 3 pooches while am away at work...she is happy and keeps my family happy... 2000AED is a small amount to pay for her hard work. I wish I could pay more...but thats how much I can afford right now..who knows in the future ..... fingers and toes crossed.

My first housemaid had never seen a washing machine, dishwasher, microwave etc that's very usual she also hardly spoke English but I spent time with her, training her helping her and teaching her English and paid her a decent wage - just because these girls can't work a machine doesn't mean they should be treated like 2nd rate citizens. I respect these girls/ladies they are brave having left their homes and families and often very young children to provide a better future for their families. 500 dhs a month isn't going to get a person much in any country - be a better person - pay her at least 800 and your girl will be able to give her family so much more. There are loads of Ethiopian maids in Dubai try to hook her up with some especially as you say you have friends who have Ethiopian maids and let her hav a little life outside of your family. You say she's with you 7 days a week - go on be kind and generous and give her a day off. 500 dhs in this day and age is shocking. Name and shame the agency.......

when we hired our indonesian maid 2 y. back the agency told us and wrote in the paper 700 AED (I think this is the minimum for this nationality) I started giving her 1000 aed (plus,plus,plus,plus...) Only 2 people,no children, no pets.... Now her salary is 1200 plus nice accomodation, food ,toiletries, sim card, some clothes, and some more money every time I've dinner with guests and she has to work more hours. As well as when is Ramadan,Eid (she is muslim) and also at Christmas (I'm christian). she seems very happy.

I really think 500 a month is awful. 1) would you do what she does for 500 a month? 2) when your children are grown up would you think it ok for their employer to pay that wage? Give her a pay rise now. Or do you need permission from an unscrupulous agency to do that. Sorry to sound harsh but I think you need to get some perspective. I'm sure you can stretch to 800...

I am finding all this quite boring now. I had simply replied to a lady who was wondering how much ppl pay their maids. I don't need to justify myself to anyone. I have a happy home and happy maid and that's all that counts. End of. in denial that you are essentially abusing your maid's human rights perhaps?

when deciding what Salary to pay your maid... you should first of all check what the legal requirement is.. that should be your starting point and the minimum. anything that you pay over is up to you and how much you can afford... I agree paying somone 2k plus may not be everyones cup of tea but you shouldnt feel ashamed about paying just the minimum !

Ok then, so mind as well reporting her agency. ? Don't understand your quote. Oh I've just seen your the same poster who complained that your maid gives u attitude and has become lazy, who u have only had for 6 months. Maybe she's relized she can earn more money else where. edited by fairycakeyumm on 17/08/2011 Probably... but it won't happen until next year Mmmmm have u not heard of maids absconding. I am well awared of this... that is why I am giving her other benefits other than her salary and she is truthfully happy; no chance she will do this :)
