alrighty...does anyone have experience with a child going to school in dubai with a speech delay? My friend sent her DS (who had a speech delay and some other issues) to Blossom nursery, where they had a speech therapist come onsite and work with the kids that needed help. If you want, I can email you her details and you can talk to her about who see saw. I do remember it was hard to get an appointment with this woman (outside the nursery) as she was really booked up. However, my daughter is 24 months, and she has a lot of friends that aren't talking a whole lot either, so I'm not sure I'd be all that worried, if I were you. edited by guinness on 25/01/2011 edited by guinness on 25/01/2011 ooh, I would LOVE the information! my email address is: kishmish at gmail dot com ... although hearing that other children around the same age as my DS are in the same boat makes me feel like maybe this isn't such a serious problem. :)

GlitterPunk, have you had any fresh air in the last 24hrs? :-p only messing. I am at work and find this forum extremely distracting during the day....i need to ration myself! absolutely not. this move is stressing me out beyond belief! I only just made a home in London. I'm soo tired! I'm soo worried! Ever since I realized I had to move, my sleep has been out the door. I need to be medicated (heavily!). When is your move? i have to confess from the time i was offered my job to the moment i got here it was stressful, lack of sleep etc, but once you have done it and it falls into place, i am sure you will be fine. Hugs, as we have all been there... honestly if you have some time to yourself, just get out and clear your head. I found Lists helped with the stress.....

I guess if he's 27 months now there is a chance he could be 3 by 1 Sept or soon after. However, if he has a language delay I would not be rushing to put him in to FS1 this September but delay starting big school till Sept 2012. That will give him lots of time to catch up. A lot of research shows that, particularly for boys, there are advantages to being towards the older end of the class rather than being one of the youngest. No good Nursery should have a problem accepting a child with a language delay, particularly if they know you are doing something about it. Yes, I agree with this. We were thinking of putting him through intensive therapy+play therapy this year (which we have been doing) and then I'd work with him in an encouraging manner until we found him a good nursery, and I would continue our daily lessons until 2012 (plus other professional support) and if he had caught up significantly then we would stay in Dubai otherwise, we'd have to live between London and Dubai (husband would live in the UAE, while I got the appropriate support in London while being a stay at home mom to continue to work with him). Blah, this just brings to surface how depressed about all of this I really am. Hey, Glitterpunk, please, don't be depressed. My daughter (she who is now rebelling against everything and failing all her exams and hating life here and doesn't believe she's really bright and feels there's no future for herself, doesn't see the point in being alive, oh what a recommendation as a parent am I) was considered (by others, not her proud parents) to be extremely backward with language until she was about 4 years old. She then came out speaking 3 languages fluently, it was just she was sorting stuff out in her brain and not going too fast for herself. I'll bet you'll find the same with your lovely little boy (let's face it, English and American English are poles apart, two different languages!). Anyhow, he's a whole lot more advanced with the potty training than other kids! Don't worry, be happy and your child will be too.. His babyhood is so precious, let him and you enjoy it. Sorry to sound grandma-ish.. No, you sound great and very re-assuring :)! Thank you

It's a long time since dorter did her potty training. She was happy in her nappies and didn't get upset at being dirty, so it was a bit of a struggle, so I'd agree, if your son wants to potty-train himself, encourage it!

I'm actually not encouraging his potty training right now. He's quite obsessed with the idea himself after he was given the book 'everybody poos'. I'll just try to ease it out of his mind for now. Secretly though, I am pleased that he's showing initiative, just wish he'd do it when we weren't about to shift our whole lives over to Dubai. I'm going to be different and say I'd continue to encourage it. He's showing initiative and that he is ready - that's more than half the battle. I certainly wouldn't want to discourage my child if he/she were ready. My daughter was like your son and asked all on her own one day to use the toilet. This was just before traveling to the US for the summer. When we flew we still encouraged her to use the bathroom but put a nappy on her in case there wasn't one available or she fell asleep on the plane. Being in a different country didn't disrupt her routine at all as far as potty training. It is so hard to find the right time to potty train an individual child that when they are showing signs they are ready I wouldn't want to discourage them. When is the perfect time really? So the question is do you do it when it is convenient for you or for him? Seems to me he's telling you now is the time. Yeah, he's quite excited to tell us that he wants to go to the bathroom. he does his diaper dance and says "lets go to looo!" I love how he speaks britspeak with his American accent. :)

Do not believe everything you read on here!! At the Rashid Paediatric Therapy Centre (next to MOE) you do not have to pay to see a doctor before starting therapy. At the moment they have only a small waiting list which they say should equate to maybe a 2 week wait. They are a non for profit centre with excellent western trained therapists at reasonable rates (300dhs an hour). 04 340 0005 The senior SLT is called Jess Renton. Leave a message for her. edited by plum2 on 24/01/2011 I'll call now, I followed Georgiagirls reccs too.

Therein lies the problem...we dropped our insurance at home and can't afford multiple flights a year. Had we known about the situation here, I would have done things a lot differently. I actually just researched and read a lot and bought a video called Baby Babble (my son will be 2 next week) and he is improving, thank goodness. However, he was really behind and I had no one to help me help him. I actually considered paying someone in the US to...um...use internet communication for therapy. Whatever you do, have a plan before you get on the plane :) Also, are you planning to work here? I haven't found a nursery that covers working hours yet (I guess like a day care) so check on that as well. ETA: I will not identify the center here, but one very helpful office manager told me that if her child needed therapy, she would go home as soon as possible. edited by georgiagirl on 24/01/2011 I won't be working. I've decided that I'm going to try and help my little boy more by working with him. I feel a big reason for his delay was his severe reflux as a baby, I went back to work and he was left with a nanny and then when my parents passed away my younger sisters ended up moving in with us and then we had to let his nanny go. I hope (quite naively that this is the cause for his delayed speech). I just feel that his current speech therapist isn't doing much here in London. I do work a lot with him now, not sure I'm making much of a difference either.

I must tell you that I have been so disappointed with the therapy offered here in Dubai. READ: [b'>There are waiting lists for ALL speech and occupational therapy sessions![/b'> You will have to shell out cash for a doctor/parents consultation at EACH center to be put on the waiting list, then you sit and wait. My son is on the waiting list at 3 different places and we've been here since September. If your son really needs speech therapy, please try to stay home with him or retain insurance at home so you can take him back for sessions a few times a year. Get on the phone now and schedule appointments.... Some places I've found (in Dubai): KidsFirst Medical Centre +971 4 3485437 Rashid Paediatric Therapy Center http://www.rashidc.ae/ Child Early Intervention Medical Center http://www.childeimc.com/ Dubai Center for Special Needs http://www.dcsneeds.ae/ Sima Hall (this one shows up in lots of Google searches) http://simasp.org/ I have only personally dealt with Kidsfirst, Dubai Center for Special Needs, and Child Early Intervention Medical Center, and can't recommend one over the other. Please do your research before bringing your son here permanently. He may not get what he needs :( Sorry to be dramatic, just a huge blow to us as a family once we arrived. Thank you soo much! I've been worried about this. May I ask about your experiences in Dubai? Do you end up going home often for more therapy?
