I regularly shop in Carrefour and in the last month have seen live cockroaches climbing on baby potatoes and aubergines. How disgusting, I wonder how can this happen. Make sure you wash your fruits and vegetables very well before eating them!

I've seen a big rat wandering around the fruit and veg section of Hyperpanda. Told the staff there and at the customer service desk and of course they could not have been less interested. I've never given any thought to open bread or much thought to people sneezing over the fruit and veg as I always wash it (not the bread obviously) anyway. I'm not overly-concerned about germs, insects etc. I think if we make our environment too clean we don't build up resistance to potentially harmful stuff. I almost never get sick with colds, flu, tummy problems etc. I reckon I've toughened up my immune system over the years! More concerned about chemicals, drugs, pesticides etc in the food. Couldn't agree more!!

I could never buy from the "open" spice and nuts, for all of the reasons listed below! All of the people walking by , coughing and sneezing all over- yuck! And God knows what else all over it! It is also gross to me all of the bread and bagels left in the open air at the grocery store. I once watched 2 people carry on a long conversation while leaning over the uncovered bagels. No thanks! (Barf!!) I totally agee about the 'open bread', just cannot fathom how anyone can think it hygenic to have the bread left open to everyone to touch or sneeze over. It's not something you can wash. How the Municipality regulations permit this astounds me.

I remember when I was little, shopping in Jawads in Bahrain and asking mother which cereal to get from the shelf and she told me to get anything that did not have bites out of the box corners. Back then, everything off the ship was infested.

I've seen mice running across the "rice aisle" in Lulus in Al Qusais. It hardly matters - there is a lot worse than that in our food like hormones, genetically engineered corn etc - wee wash everything before we prepared and cook anyway - cockie poo can be washed off - genetic engineering cannot!

I think SanRan is referring to cockroach juice being spread across the counter. The thought of that makes me sick too. We know ! :-P

I was shocked to see a cockroach at the payment counter in Spinneys - Meadows and you should have seen the way the cashier killed it (thankfully with a tissue) but she dragged it across the counter made me so angry... Hmm, how else should she have killed it?

It is normal! You should see what crawls on them before they are displayed.
