I hired a maid in Dubai like a month ago, who turned out to be a total trouble maker and confessed she used to hit the dog in her previous employment. We decided to let her go and look for a new one.
I placed ads in the paper and EW. I got hundreds of calls and I am being interviewed each time by the Philipinas 1) what's my nationality? 2) where I live? 3) my family info etc.. all these before I ask any questions. and out of hundreds only 2 showed up for the interview and did not turn out well...

what should I do? should I keep on advertising or go through the agency route I am exhausted:(

So basically u have to take the risk of your new maid having an infectious disease until the medicals r done whether u go through an agency or privately. If the maid you got through an agency tests positive for any of the screenable diseases, you can send her back to the agency and get a new one free of charge.

No agencies do not screen for health issues like TB in the home countries. Did the maid get two tests, as we have had several workers come back as positive for TB and a second test has been clear. They got a false positive.

I know a lady who brought a maid from Ethiopia who was the relative of her friend's maid. After a month trial she started the residence visa procedures. The lady got a call from preventive medicine that the maid has tuberculosis and she has to be deported ASAP and was put on the first flight back. Can this happen if one gets a maid through an agency? does agencies test maids for infectious diseases before bringing them? Just wondering.

Hi Tarcin, have you had any luck? I was looking recently for a housemaid to fill in for me for one month and I now have 3 lovely ladies available... all Sri Lanka, mature, good with children and speak good English. Also - more importantly - all with good recommendations from friends. One has her own visa. The other 2 need sponsoring. I only have 1 job of course so two are available. Let me know if your are interested and I will post my contact details. Hi there ladies, I wouldn't recommend her if i didn't have faith in her sister and the fact that she has 3 yrs experience, (and a family to feed) so not looking for trouble. anyways anyone can call her and that family for a reference to judge and decide before the first step is done. As you said there are pro and cons both routes and I prefer when someone is recommended, without an agency as 1- they charge the lady in the country a lot of money, and 2- they charge you a lot of money, 3- don't always offer any guarantees if things go really wrong; 4- bring someone THEY don't even know, with no experience!!!! Privatly, you'd only be paying her a ticket, and visa to come (1200+300)... two months later (time to get tested and understand each other) you can either pay the final fees (medical 400, visa 5000) or 2- transfer or cancel her visa and send her back home (1200)... really It's a simple choice for me may be others see it diferently. As for feeling guilty, I hope I never have to, as she will be calling the lady and checking references directly, making that choice herself not being forced by anyone to take her on. I really hope everyone's choice is the right one for their family's best

Explorer is 2000 dhs deposit 2000 dhs per month and a few post dated cheques for the first few months and they hold a cheque for a deposit for 5000 dhs.( they dont cash this) Wish id gone down that route as after 3 months my maid was breaking the law so 6000 dhs gone down the drain. I know they only get a low wage but i havent got 6000 dhs to keep chucking away if a maid doesnt work out.. There r pros and cons what ever u decide to do.

Explorer is a good idea except that is is very expensive, especially when you consider that the maid makes less than 800 a month.

No not if u dont sponsor her.The agency will sponsor her and if she s not getting on well they will replace her. I have friends who do this one uses Explorer agency and someone else uses Howdra. That way u dont have t o part with 6000 dhs with sponsoring them and in 3 months they dont work out uve lost all the sponsor money.

thank you fairycakeymom for the warning. Isn't it the same though? Agency or word of mouth? I'll still have to interview the said lady just like I would someone from an agency. And last time I brought someone from an agency after interviewing her while she was still in her country, she turned out to be not so good.

You ll be taking a huge risk to employ someone that u dont even know, in a different country...even if the op knows family of the ethopian it doesnt mean she ll be anygood....Also if she is a total disaster will Sababy feel guilty for reccommending her... From experience of losing thousands of DHS with sponsoring maids please go through agencies.

yes, better to hire straight from their home country via agency.

the first question is if I am arab or not? most of the time their geography knowledge is not good enough to locate my home country... then again same question comes: are you arab or british? lol if you are so against working for arabs why are you in Dubai must be my next question edited by tarcin on 29/03/2011

My previous and current maids had no dubai experience. Hence no reference. And yet, I had no REAL issue with both of them. The previous one I hired thru an agency and worked with me for almost 2 years. The current one, I hired thru her sister who worked in a salon that I used to go to and is on her 3rd year. It's probably riskier as they have no reference, hence not everybody cup of tea. But personally, if my current one decided to leave, i would hire a fresh to dubai again.

Have a look at www.backtobasicsuae.com. I've already mentioned this website. I came across it at the ExpatWoman Education Fair I went to the other week. It has tips on getting maids, visa requirements etc and there is also a section for maids/nannies looking for work. Take a look.
