I would deduct 300 dhs off her salary for the next ten months and be furious. Sticky. I smell a rat. Better go see an otolaryngologist quick then!

I would make her pay at least a portion of the damages. The only way they learn to respect your home and belongings is if they feel the sting of having to replace something they damaged due to carelessness. I had this problem repeatedly with my last maid not bothering to sort the laundry properly and ruining all the whites by mixing with dark colours. Only once I told her that any further damages would come out of her salary did she tart doing it properly.

3000dhs isn't that much, really its ok. You'll be ok in a while when you realise the amount. If it was 30,000dhs then sure be mad. I don't have a maid so probably not wise for me to comment as I'm sure its hard and frustrating. But pay, get it fixed, tell her off for being so careless - you have every right to be mad. edited - sorry I don't mean 3000 isn't a lot of money, i mean from what you say the damage is, it seems ok. edited by Dxb.Fairy on 26/01/2011

do not hire and sponsor a maid unless you can afford to cancel them. That means before their contract is up. the maids will never learn and you are a pushover.

No I don't have insurance and yes I have explained to her from the first day that she must not use a wet mop on the floors. Must dry the mop completely when mopping up. Told her lots of times to not wet the floor. Even if there are drops of water on the floor I have explained to her that she must not leave it to stand on the floors as it will damage them. I just did her visa in December so its not easy to just send her back. if you have told her lots of times to not wet the floors, then why, oh why, did you do her visa in December? Some people like to learn the hard and expensive hard way... :D

She is dumb. You cannnot make her pay when she has minimal brain activity. You can fire her though. Bring a new maid and tell her beforehand about these things. You forgot to mention: BAN! BAN! BAN!

I am sure she didn't realize the damage it had done to the floors. And I am sure she didn't do it on purpose. And lets be realistic, how do you know she did it? Could it have been your child? edited by bornconfused on 26/01/2011

sit down with her to explain to her safety and precautions to be taken around the house: fire, gaz, oven, microwave, how to switch off the water, how to switch off teh power, water faucet , etc...To make he rpay or not is up to you. I would be very tempted to deduct a certain amount from her pay every month to cover for the 3000dhs, but then it's easier said then done. Also have her take a CPR class if you guys have kids its quite important.

Do you have insurance? Will that not pay for such a situation (at least in part)? As an aside, doesn't the bathroom have a drain in the floor? That should be checked in all rooms and the kitchen to prevent a repeat disaster. As for making her not coming to you immediately - she was probably unaware of the disastrous effects of water on laminate in vast quantities - she's probably only lived with tile (and perhaps some area rugs) all her life. And the final question - should she pay to replace the floor? If insurance will pay for it I (and this is only for me - I'm not saying it's what you should do) would pay anything more. And I would pay for the full amount if it doesn't - without knowing your maid and what instructions information she has received from you, I would say it was an honest mistake and one both of us would have to learn from

Do you have insurance? I would claim from my insurance and make her pay the excess. If I had no insurance I think I would make her pay half the costs and I would cover the other half.

she was hoping she'd be able to solve it first before having you in panic. thats why she didnt shout to wake you up.if it was a fire i'm sure she'd have called you to awake. its one thing to make a mistake and then add up to it by running back to boss to ask how to solve it.agree that it was s---- of her to have forgotten to close the tap. and totally understand that you are mad.
