Maids and cooking

We have always had a situation where our maid has cooked outside and has her own detached quarters. However we may be moving to a villa where the maid's room is attached and she cannot cook outside. What do maids do? Cook in their rooms on an electric hotplate/microwave? What if it is smelly through the air con as people say?

What do you do? ( I am not having her cooking in my kitchen)

Why not build an outside kitchen?

Oh dear, there you go jumping again to conclusions, Tally Ho.......I wouldn't have ANY nationality cooking in my kitchen. ;) Australian, Chinese, American, English... nothing to do with race ....:D

Don’t you think that she should be treated with just a little bit of respect? Let her cook in the kitchen while you are out if you really can’t bear the thought of her around you. I can’t imagine making my maid cook her food outside in the garden on a hotplate or gas ring and eating in her BEDROOM !!!! while we cook in the comfort of our home.

Spongemonkey, would it be an option for your maid to use your kitchen for cooking when you are not there and having a microwave in her room for heating up the cooked food when you are there/after hours? A microwave in her room seems a lot safer than a hotplate. I'm happy for our maid to use my kitchen whenever she wants but she worries about the smell (which doesn't actually bother me) so will often cook earlier in the day then just heat in the microwave when needed. She also has a rice cooker in her room. Otherwise, it depends on where you are moving to but I know in the Ranches there are maids who deliver home cooked meals to other maids in the neighbourhood. I have no idea how much they charge but given the loan sharking interest rates, it may well not be cheap! Good luck finding a solution.

This is not an option for me. ie having our maid in our kitchen after hours as it were . Neither will I be cooking for her. You'd rather have her create a fire hazard/bug fest by cooking in her room? Perhaps you should reconsider your move? Or your need for a maid?

Every time I see one of those outside kitchens, I think not only does it look so untidy and unhygenic, but there are also bound to be safety issues! My housekeepers cook in my kitchen or eat what we eat and I don't really mind at all.

We don't have a separate kitchen so she cooks whatever she likes as it doesn't smell too much but when she cooks fish which the fry to kingdom come she does it on a hotplate outside! I cannot bear the smell of "fish sauce" but she has that she always lights a candle to try and hide the smell.

Can't she just eat whatever the family is eating?

There is an alcove in our garage, and we have a cooker with a gas bottle and shelves etc.. (all safe!) so it was pretty easy!

Ours uses the kitchen we set up in the garage for when we are home, and uses our kitchen when we are out during the day or if she is babysitting. If she is cooking strong curries she lights incense! Her doing, not our insistence. Hth Sounds like a good idea but it must be pretty expensive to set up a second kitchen in the garage though (i am thinking mainly AC), not to mention putting the garage right for the owner before you vacate the villa (if a rented one)?

Friends of ours have put a stove outside their villa, so the maid cooks there. It is a the small 'alley' on the side of their villa. Do you have a garage? I have also seen kitchens and cookers in garages. Depending on what type of food your maid cooks I am assuming that you will be able to smell her food if she cooks in her room, as I think she will also be able to smell your cooking in her room? I suppose letting her eat your food is not an option? You could always order take-out for her every night ;)
