Today I had a very interesting discussion with my local (qatari) colleague. Basically, when she heard my philippino live in maid just arrived this week, she strongly suggested to take the maids passport and keep it in safe with other personal / our family documents.

She has a lot of stories to share, has seen a lot and gone through some interesting situations with maids of her own and her family. Lifelong experience, I respect this as Im very new to all this.

According to her, a newly arrived maid should have no problems with her sponsor keeping their passport for full stay if they are not up to anything. But she also has a very different view on maids rights overall...

I was quite surprised and told this to DH who was rather strongly against keeping maids passport in our possession. I would never have considered this either. Please share your view on this. Tx

its illegal to hold passports by companies yes, but immigration actually tell you to hold the passports of domestic workers. So not sure domestic workers fall under that law?

I held my maid's passport, but because she asked me too. When I collected her passport with the visa for the first time I was told by the FZ issuing the visa to keep her passport. Edited for typo. edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 11/08/2011

Yes of course. Everyone does. You are letting a stranger into your house. You must keep some form of security. Eh, no they don't! I certainly don't and never would. I trust someone in my home, and more importantly to take care of my animals, so I figure I can trust them to look after their passport. It's personal choice, however as we all know, it is illegal to hold a passport, despite that fact that's it's a common occurrence here.

Okay, let me rephrase. Ladies, do you keep the passport of your maid in your possession or not. It's sensitive, I know...
