It's funny to read about Bouganvilleas, I am from Brazil and there they completely thrive in the rainforest, the more water the more flowers u get - could they be from a different variety? I am actually reviving four in my garden, they were almost a lost case and now they are full of leaves and one of them started blooming :) Can't wait for the other three to bloom to see what color they are!!!! And I just used water water and more water. Twice a day in the first two weeks and now I water once a day religiously. Also, water the whole plant - like a rainshower would do - not just the soil. They will love that. Hope it helps ( not an expert, just a green thumb :) )

Bouganvilla every time, you can get a beautiful selection at the garden souk off Academic City Rd. You can get really decorative ones that have been grafted and woven in different shapes. As fuddles said the secret is not to overwater them. They do very well in DXB and the climbers can be trained over a variety of surfaces. @ shahzadee I never had much success with the traditional type of garden you mentioned. It is just too hot for them I think. For a balcony garden I would go for the Bouganvilla as they are the lowest maintainance for the region.I used to find the guys at the garden souk know their stuff , however they will try and pass off stuff that is high maintainence.Ask loads of questions. Remember everything grows really quickly in DXB so you don't have to buy the bigger more expensive plants.

Hi. I love flowers and would want something to pot on our balcony (as chances are we'll live in a flat not a villa). I like Fuchsias, Lupins, foget-me-nots, geraniums, panseys...that kind of thing...obviously the Fuchsias in particular would not like the heat and sun over there so what are the similar looking options? Or do you have suggestions of all eastern plants that could make a nice little potted garden on the balcony?

Can anyone please help me ? I want to buy some plants/schrub to put in pots, I have a sunny garden all day which is very hot not sure plants will cope !! Bouganvilla survive very well with direct sunlight and very little water and only flower if they are not overwatered, so that would be a great option for your sunny garden. edited by fuddles on 06/06/2011
