This is a condition that hasn't been much investigated and, I agree with Manubhadauria, the % should be higher if they surveyed again. According to recent investigations, diet does play a crucial role (as in everything :) ) and loosing weight (esp waist area) is very important for those of us (yes, me too!!!) suffering from it. You can find some books giving advice on the adequate diet for PCOs.

you all know that they say 18% women have this condition..i think they should survey again its more then 50 % of the population. i have been diagnosed too with PCOS along with mild insulin resistance for over a period of 6 months now..have started the medicines since 1 month. as per diet i am trying to follow low GI diet( off course adjustments acc to me ;) )

Hi Safiyyad, I was diagnosed with PCOs many years ago with a few symptoms despite it not being a ver serious case (excessive wieght, irregular periods, excessive body hair, acne (until late in my twenties), etc. :( ). Meanhwile I have a 3-year-old and am pregnant for the 2nd time :) and did not have to have my cysts removed. By the way, my Dr. is Dr. Maria Koneva (Hamarain Centre) and she is great. As I do not menstruate regularly, I had to have some 'help' but next month after treatment (both times) I was pregnant. You will have to follow your doctor's directions as each case is different and you need to go for regular check-ups just to monitor. As far as I know cyst removal is easier when it is only one but a bit more complicated when it is multiple small cysts (my case) but I might be wrong in this. The doctor will know the best procedure for you. Usually women that have PCOs (might) have: - irregular periods - difficulty in loosing weight especially abdomen (they are more apple shaped) - some execessive hair in their body - insuline problems - tendency for depression - etc. They might have only 1 or more or all of the above, depending on the case. A healthy diet, exercise (esp. specific for the problematic areas) and of, course, loosing excessive weight is extremely crucial for us. This also helps in keeping the right insuline levels. I advise you to check this website as they give very valuable information - http://www.pcosupport.org/symptoms.php The good thing abt checking it for me was to understand the condition better and finally understand why I had a few symptoms and to understand how I could combat them the best way. Best of luck.

Ladies it's not a co-incidence you are insulin resistant! High levels of insulin knock other hormones out of whack leading to the pcos. The root of the problem with most types of pcos is high insulin. Your insulin levels go high when u eat foods high on the glucose index( GI), so the way to prevent them rocketing so much is to eat low GI. Being overweight can increase your insulin resistance too which makes your body produce more insulin, exacerbating the problem. Losing weight , eating low GI to prevent those insulin spike, and doing exercise which increases your body's receptiveness to insulin all help to control pcos. If this doesn't work your doc may prescribe metformin which helps too.

I also suffer from this and was not aware of it until i felt a sharp sudden pain in my abdomen during an excercise class one day. I had it checked out and turns out it was a ruptured cycst and the ultrasound showed many other cycsts on my ovaries. That was in the August and in the November i concieved my DD. I have always watched what i ate, excercised and have been on the lower side of the BMI scale. I noticed cravings and hairs in unusual places but didn't think it was serious enough to go to the docs. I now try to maintain a heathier lifestyle in regards to diet/treats and force myself to get in at least 1 cardio class a week. Fibre filled foot is great for keeping cravings under control but watch fruit juice and too much fruit for unwanted sugar content.

Its ok to consume brown rice, and you get brown basmati rice at the Organics cafe in Dubai Mall. One of the other things I was advised was to have frequent, small sized meals, as frequent as 2 hours, starting with heaviest as breakfast and you would eventually feel so full by dinner, that you would automatically have a very light dinner. Keeping hungry for long periods of time would actually defeat your purpose. So go out there and enjoy your eats. Avoid greasy, sugary food. Am sure you will do good. thanks ..what do you eat for breakfast - i am on white oats everyday but i dont have frequent meals which i must start .i am also am insulin resistant which is very worrying

saffiyad - Don't worry. PCOS is a very common issue with most women in this time and age due to our lifestyle. I was diagnosed with the same too, and conceived naturally, thanks to control(not rigid) on diet and basic exercise for 6 months regularly. You could try it out yourself too. I avoided white rice and breads. Consumed plenty of fiber rich vegetables and fruits, preferably raw veggies. Walked(brisk) 20 mins a day, 5 times a week. Drank sufficient(2-3lts) of water. I have a 4 yr old son and I can safely say its not very easy nor impossible to conceive when you have PCOS, however you just need to give natural method of getting fit a chance(which will automatically set things right) before you try complicated invasive methods. Goodluck :) thanks .i am now on brown bread only should i also cut out basmati rice? i eat fruit salad for lunch but dinner is tough to control.will try your advice to exercise more ..

Hi, I have PCOS and was due to start on a course of tablets (cant remember the name of them now) after trying to concieve for over a year. I didnt start the tablets as i fell pregnant naturally, baby is due in 3 days. I was told by my Dr that as i was overwieght (like i didnt know!) and the best thing to do was lose weight and this would "ease" the symptoms of the PCOS... after a month of eating healthy and taking the dog out for more walks i was pregnant. Obviously this advice is useless to you if you are a healthy weight but thought id share. Good luck!
