You are supposed to change tyres after every summer, and my car gets serviced after every 5 - 10,000kms at the dealership
Never heard about supposedly needing to change tyres annually. We've heard that the registration test will fail a car if the tyres are more than 3 years old, but don't know how true that is.
No need to have your car serviced so frequently, either. No actual mechanical need, anyway. The idea that the climate here is somehow uniquely harsh on cars is a hoary old myth.
I had a long conversation with a colleague last night. It's a small company and only 3 of us have a car. Last year on Eid two drivers came back to work having done over 1500km on their cars each in just 2 days. Both cars were knackered and spent two days in the garage.
The MD was livid and imposed restrictions after that.
my 40km does not include the travel to and fro work. There's a "bulldog" secretary who monitors the gps logs and works out what's what.
marycathering, were you given a car out of a pool? How did the sign-in/sign-out work? I know the MD is considering a car pool and I might get brownie points if I can outline some logistics for him. Ms Bulldog leaves at 4pm otherwise she would control the signing book.
Is the 40 km part of your Km to and fro from work ?.
Anyone going to Abu Dhabi 4 times a week would be considered high use.Although travelling from one end of Dubai to another can be up to 30 Km.
I
Long story short I go to Abu Dhabi 4 nights a week to see a friend. They charge petrol at pump prices but it's the wear and tear at 2.5 dirhams a km that's adding up like a monster on ster
I am grateful to have the car but 40km seems like nothing when you consider how far everything is here.
Yes all the rules were laid out in advance.
In my country unlimited personal use of a company provided car is a taxable benefit and must be declared on income tax returns. In fact, employers are required to report such to the government and provide the proper forms for the employee to use at tax time.
In the GCC, I have been allowed to use company cars but the mileage is tracked and if I want to be reimbursed for petrol used on company travel I need to provide receipts. The car is also signed in and out.
Sounds like the OP was really lucky with her company car in the past. Perhaps she should do as a recent poster stated - ask for a transportation allowance in lieu of an actual vehicle.
This is ridiculous if they gave you a company car they should expect some personal use. I would be asking to return the company car and ask for a transport allowance instead. I can understand the petrol allowance but wear and tear seems petty and excessive. Very few companies provide cars and a transport allowance is more economical for them so to provide and give with such restrictions seems illogical.
Going to AD 4 times a week to see a friend is your choice, it's not your company's responsibility to get you there.
Maybe spend the money buying a little runaround car of your own where you will pay to fuel and maintain a car that belongs to you and not the company.
To be honest, I think you're very likely to get a black mark beside your name if you complain that this perk isn't generous enough for you. It's not worth the potential trouble it could cause you.

I'd say it is generous of your company as companies who offer perks are becoming fewer and fewer. And if the terms have been laid out from the start, I'm not sure what grounds you would complain on. The cost of petrol here is so cheap anyway that unless you are planning to drive up to Al Ain Zoo every day it is probably negligable!
Most of the rest of us have to pay all of our own petrol/travel costs whether to work or play, so I'd consider yourself quite lucky. :)
I'm not really sure where you think you have grounds for complaint.
If it was your own car you'd have to pay petrol and wear and tear.
Have they told you what they would charge for petrol, is it in line with the pump prices? How would they charge you for wear and tear?
Maybe they've been bitten by employees using company vehicles as unofficial taxis during the weekends.
I've been given a lovely company car complete with breakdown recovery and insurance. They pay for my petrol for all business use during working hours plus evening and weekend personal use up to a maximum of 40km a week.
If I exceed 40km a week personal use, they deduct petrol plus wear and tear. Unfortunately the car is fitted with GPS that automatically feeds back my movements and mileage.
Back home, I was allowed to use the car for unlimited personal mileage and could claim back all my petrol. So now I'm finding the restriction of 40km limiting and odd that I have to pay for petrol plus wear and tear if I go over.
Is this reasonable and can I complain? I'm not really a complainer but it's my first placement in Dubai and I don't know what's the acceptable norm.
