Hi Ladies,

I'm hoping some of you have been to Jordan, Petra in particular. We are going there for a week at the end of this month, what I would like to know is how many days/nights did you stay in Petra and apart from the main site was there anything else to do there?

We plan on going to Petra early in the morning from Amman and returning back to Amman the next day, will this be enough for Petra or would you suggest 2 nights.

There's nothing on the internet that explains how long the excursion takes in Petra, but going by the pics and little information, it seems we need a full day so just 1 night will be enough?!

Oh and bearing in mind we have a 1 year old with us!

Confused....please let there be an EW to help!!

TIA
:)

We went Feb last year... it had snowed in the mountains the week before we went... then when we were in Petra it was quite hot (25deg) comparitively.... we wore Jeans, boots and tshirts - hats are a must if the sun is out as it seemed fierce even in Feb. I think by late march it will prob be warm weather, but it was very cool over night.. Have you looked at http://www.wunderground.com/.. Not sure if you can get it for Petra, but we use this for most of our hols..

Thank you so much everyone for all the great info! We booked Intercontinental in Amman for 4 nights and The Movenpick for 2 nights in Petra...really looking forward to it!! I heard about the strollers being a bad idea in Petra, we are going to use our babybjorn carrier, I think it'll be ok...hopefully! For those of you that travelled there in March, what was the weather like? When we booked the hotels they said to us it was 25c during the day in Amman and Petra was around 18c but on the weather websites it says max 15c- min 8c....so don't know what to expect. We will of course take warm clothing with us, and are not too bothered about it being a bit cold/warm rather then hot...we are from the UK so used to the cold and will be a welcome change!! lol :)

We stayed at Crown Plaza - walking distance from gate. It is a bit 'old' but clean and comfortable. Close to walk into town if you want. Petra is not suitable for a pram of ANY kind! so be prepared to carry LO. We went with a 2 & 5yo. 5yo is a fab walker and walked all the way to the end. Little one walked maybe 500m then wanted carried. On the way back we caught a donkey ride which brings you about 1/3 the way back. you need to then walk a bit more and then can catch a horse cart for the last 1/3. It is all a bit expensive and then they want tips ontop of the extortionate prices for the basic transport (I think the going rate was USD20 for the Horse cart ride + tip!) BUT... it was an AMAZING place that we spent a whole day at - from gates opening in the morning. Lots of cafe stops for drinks etc along the way.... make sure you take a good camera! HAve fun..

Stayed there in January at the Movenpick. The entrance to Petra was just outside the hotel driveway. The hotel was great; clean, fresh and nicely decorated. Ask to be put anywhere except above reception; that was quite noisy for me, with coaches and dogs barking on the land next door. My friend was in a different part of the hotel and had a totally peaceful night. I would recommend this hotel. Breakfast selection good, restaurants good and room service excellent. Have a lovely time: it is breathtaking.

We went to Petra in March, we stayed Marriott Petra 2 nights, a friendly but slightly tired hotel. Free shuttle service to Petra taxi back. Petra is huge if you want to discover it properly I would suggest 2 nights in Petra so you have a full day to explore or even 2 half days as you have a LO. A back carry for LO would probably be a must, we saw people with push chairs and they struggled. There is pony and trap rides, we did a horse ride and a donkey ride but LO is 5 years. Petra costs 50 JD for one day or 55JD each for 2 days. Donkey rides and pony and trap are extra, water or a cup of tea is about 5JD. Please dont go thinking it is a cheap holiday as Jordan has become quite expensive compared to when we went 5 years ago. It is a beautiful country well worth a visit to say you have been. On the way back from Petra you could stop by the dead sea, but again with a LO who will not be able to go in not sure if it is worth the stop, also the hotels seem to have taken all the free bits of the beach now. We stayed at the Kempinski at the dead sea which was just divine even if the cheapest bottle of wine cost 34 JD (incl taxes). :-( Oh yes taxes, service tax, municipality tax, and if the restaurant want to put there tax on as well. Hope this helps you a little, bit happy to answer any Qs if I can to help you more.

We went to Petra two years ago. Drove from Amman via Dead Sea, Mountain Nebo and the…..Castel (forgot the name). What would be my concern is military check points on the road (a lot of them). They were checking our documents only, but it does take time if you are on a mission to get somewhere quickly. Nowadays, considering all situation in the region I would say it would be even more painful. In Petra we were staying in Petra Palace. Good budget hotel, very close to the main gates. If you’re going there with LO I would take two days for site seeing. It took whole day for two of us to explore the main sites. Enjoy the trip!

NadiaA you are so lucky to go back to Amman regularly they have the best chocolate and pastry shop in the world in Al Sweifieh near Union Bank [b'>Chez Hilda[/b'> .... oooh how I miss that shop.. As far as Petra is concerned, It depends what you are going for,.. if its just want to have a quick look, take a few snaps, and to be able to say you've been there, a quicky through the site will take the morning and getting back is quicker if you pay to take a pony trap. BUT if you are in any way in awe of the place A Full Day at least is required, we always took camelbaks with us so we had extra water while walking and not having to carry it in bottles.. look at the map of the site so you can plan where you go, and not miss interesting side bits. Good footwear is a MUST. The Siq is quite a long walk but should be nice and cool, be aware to take a light cardigan or covering for the walk /ride back up, as it can be chilly sometimes if you are walking back up early evening. There are places to eat,get a soda and just sit for a while and toilet on the site in a few places. We generally combined a trip to Petra with a short stay in Aqaba. A day on the beach following the walk was always welcomed. we always traveled down to Petra the short route, and back along the Dead Sea. (necessary if anyone has been scuba diving that day) you cannot go the fast way home after scuba as the ascent is too fast and you can get the bends . edited by Sage & Onion on 16/03/2011

Loved Petra, one of my fav places (but then this is were I met DH so maybe that's why!) If I were you I'd spend 2 nights there simply as like this you have a full day on site which means specially with a little one you can take your time. We had 2 full days there and doubt we've seen everything. I did a donkey ride as suggested by der and it was fun (and saved my legs for a while). You may also want to consider a guide as some of the stuff can be a bit obscure without proper explaination. Have you got something to carry your LO in? Those backpack sort of baby carrier are very good and I would recommend something like that for Petra. Otherwise lots of other things to do in the region like the Dead Sea, Roman ruins in Amman and Jerash (loved the chariot race in Jerash), the mosaics in Madaba, the Forteress in Karac... Hope you'll enjoy your trip!

Hi desertrose, I agree that you could easily spend a few days exploring petra. But being there on a short holiday with a one year old son, you could see the highlights of Petra in one day. There will be a lot of walking, but ofcourse there are always stops where you can take a rest inside and have something to drink. You could also instead of walking the Siq/ the gorge canyon which is the entrance of Petra, take a cart. Inside you have the option of getting a donkey/horse ride. The Movenpick Petra is a beautiful hotel to spend the night. If you want something better priced in this high season, check out Petra Guest House or Petra Palace. It wont be a bad idea, to arrive a night earlier to Petra, and start your visit early next morning. The drive from Amman to Petra is a 3-3,5 hour. So it might be a good idea to spend 2 nights instead of one. Dont wait too long for the hotel bookings in Petra as end of the month is considered a high/peak season. Enjoy Petra :) If you need any advise, lemme know. I am a jordanian and in the travel business :)

Without your 1yr old you could probably spend a good four days in Petra - we never realised how huge the site is. However you can stay overnight - we stayed (I think) at the Movenpick and we thought it was great. You can get a donkey ride through the site which may help with your young one

desertrose, even though I'm married to a Jordanian and hop accross to Amman often, I've only done Petra once and will thus rely on what little I remember from that trip! My son was two at that time and threw up several times on that journey so you might want to keep lots of extra clothes for your little one in case your child gets car sick. There are two routes of getting there - one is the highway and the other is the outer banks of the Dead Sea. We took the latter and thus it also took longer and was perhaps a bumpier road. Keep your passports on your since you have to pass through a few check-points. We got to Petra quite late...it closes at 5pm or so....and even though they let us in, no one told us that it'll get dark and on the walk back (thru the caves) it was pitch dark and we had only our cell phone lights to guide us through. Once inside, it'll take you no more than two hours I guess to do the walk and see everything but the trick is to get there early and leave the city in time. We didn't spend the night there so can't help with that but I think you could just do a day trip if you wanted. You would enjoy spending a day or two at the Dead Sea so perhaps you'd like to look into that. Petra is absolutely stunning and very enchanting to say the least but you can't take the baby in a stroller since its all rocks and stones so one of you will have to carry the little one. Enjoy your trip!
