Cafe au lait, was there any mention of a fine to you? We also have teenagers over 15. Can we apply for them ( without them being present) and is there a wait when you rwturn with them? anybody can do the paperwork at any typing centre. you take your passport with visa and money they will fill out an online form you check the information is correct they will then give you a selection of 3 times to go to the eida to complete the fingerprints/photos etc. all persons over 15 must go to the eida to do the fingerprinting etc. all persons under 15 do not need to do that. once you have done the form in the case of under 15 and once you have done the fingerprinting they will issue the card, it really depends on the amount they are doing it. when i applied for mine back in october it took 3 weeks for the process to start and to get my card. when i applied for my hubs it was about 3 weeks, but when i did it for my children under 15 it took a little longer for the card to be printed. its not the card that you really need as long as you have started the process ie got the receipt by filling in the form at the typing centre thats usually enough to do in abu dhabi at least anything necessary at the traffic dept. for renewal of visas thats a different matter you have to have done it all.

So you can apply at any typing centre? According to their website, yes. It worked for me with my renewal even if it is painfully slow to actually receive the card. I was only in the typing office for 20 mins. http://www.eida.gov.ae/en/process-and-fees/registration-process.aspx

We were fortunate at EGHQ that it was just me and my husband. We had to take my 15 year old son in a couple of days later. Just so you know the timeline, my husband and I applied Jan. 5, my son completed his application Jan. 8. We just got a text that his is ready. No word on my husband's or mine.

If you are going to "go it alone" rather than going through HQ, I would recommend the official typing centre in the Mazaya Centre for those of you who are near SZR. I recently got my renewal processed through them, and whilst it took a long time to actually get my card (8 weeks - and that was for a renewal!) the process was really smooth and easy.

If its that bad then I think I would just go to other offices instead of EGHQ. Im not getting up super early to stand in a slow queue with my toddler.

It can all be done at HQ, the trick is that you have to go really early in the morning to get a ticket. They only dispense 142 tickets per day. We went last week at had to wait four and a half hours. We got there at 6:45 am and had numbers 45, 46 and 47. Take some books and some snacks and something to listen to and you should be okay. The dispenser opens at 6 am. Don't forget your passports!! Exact cash helps too. edited by cafe au lait on 15/01/2012 OMG sounds like a nightmare! Did they know you'd already filled in an application or did u have to tell them? So the tix machine opens at 6 but what time do they start to process and do u need a tix for each application ie kids who aren't there? Sorry for all the qs

Great! Do we have to go to typing centre first? I know the typing people at HQ are superslow....

Based on the man I spoke to at HQ it sounded like Jan 1st and only charging for "business days". He said that he had to pay about 180dhs today and that was a fine of 20dhs per day.

I was at HQ today and was told that it would only be 20dhs per day so if we do the ID cards in the next week or so it should only amount to a few hundred dirhams rather than 1,000 per person. My DH has an expired UAE ID card so his is only a renewal so I'm not sure if there will still be fines for him and I put in my application in 2009 and then never followed up with the rest of the process so again not sure if I will have fines but will find out this week.

Okay so I found out that dhs1000 will be charged per adult. So for me and my DH its dhs2000 down the drain. :( Children (below 15) will only be charged from October 2012. edited by Appletiser on 13/01/2012

Sorry to report that it is 1000 dhs each. Both he and his wife fined, so looks like we are up for 4000. Will be following up with the HR paperwork that says we have till march 2012.

That is wierd that they are being fined and shocking too. They have it stated on HR direct that the date residents/expats need to have it is 31st May 2012 (as I said earlier) but who knows?! I and my DD travelled on the 31st out of Dubai and entered on the 1st and nothing was said. I'm travelling again next week (but this time my visa is cancelled!) but DD should be needing hers. The thought of getting fined for her.... ohhhhhhh...

If this is the case surely it will only be the employee who is fined the family should still have until may I hope so! Dhs1000 is bad but dhs4000 for all four of us will be absolubtely horrible. So much for budgeting in 2012. :(

Well, max fine is 1000 dhs, so at 20 dhs a day we are nearly at the max, so guess no point rushing (and travelling next week as well, so no time now) Hope to hear from someone who has applied in last month to see if they got fined. I think a lot of people have been caught judging by reaction in office yesterday. edited by Cherry ripe on 13/01/2012

Havent quite got around to getting our emirates Id card as we thought we had till june 2012, but have just found out that apparently Emirates airline employees are classed as government employees and cut off date for applying was dec 1, 2011. If this is true in a few days we will have earned the maximum penalty of 1000 dhs each in late fines. Can anyone confirm if this is true. If you are EK have you applied yet? Dont want to stir up the id card rumours again but just interested in what other EK people have been told. We havent applied yet. If they are already charging EK employees then we are truly screwed! Forgot that EK is government. Whaaaa! :(

No, colleague that was fined was british, not emirati. We only had visas done in august and our id cards were not issued then. All so confusing. Thanks for info on how long it takes at HQ. Would not have expected it to take so long. Another day wasted.

Good that they now do it at HQ, when I got mine I had to traipse around every location on my days off under my own funds in taxis. had several different answers as to whether I actually needed one, no one seemed to know so I thought it safest to apply. Then told it's linked to visa renewal and I'll have to get a new one when my egate expires. Who knows!!!! Friend who joined company after me (pilot) got his done on joining, with nothing required from him aside from fingerprints and signature (taken and then card given X amount of days/weeks later) Still a bit ticked off about that! lol

You probably saw me there on Monday for several hours (actually I seem to be there most days lately!), although I wasn't waiting for the ID card! My DH spent a day coming and going doing his! He went in at 7.30 and got home at 4pm (but he came home a couple of times and went to several banks, and waited an hour before he finally processed it!) I still need to do mine but waiting for my visa to be changed. Going to be fun waiting with a baby!! Not exactly looking forward to it!

I went there on monday at 8am, and had to leave at 2pm cause it still wasn't my turn and I had to pick the children up. There's a good 6 hours of my life I will never see again!:(

I've read that UAE ID cards for Residents/Expats that they are needed by 31st May 2012 (from HR). Maybe he was an Emirati who was fined as I think they had to have theirs done by the end of 2011? Just to let you know (if you didn't already) that at EGHQ they only take 120 people (I think) per day for the UAE ID card processing, so you will need to be there at 7am ish as they fill up fast and it is a very long day if you are one of the last (have a good book or go for lunch/coffee while you wait)!
