please check the staff page for information...this is it in part regarding fines etc. ' 17 January 2012: All UAE-based staff are requested to process their UAE ID cards as soon as possible. The Federal Emirates ID Authority (EIDA) has started levying Dhs20 fine per day (maximum Dhs 1,000) from 1st January 2012 onwards for government/semi-government employees who are yet to renew or process their cards. [b'>As EIDA has classified the Emirates Group as a government/semi-government organisation, the deadline of 31st May 2012 for Dubai residents published earlier by EIDA is not applicable to Emirates [/b'>Group staff and their dependents and the deadline for government/semi-government employees (and their dependants) of 1st January 2012 will now apply.' the rest of the info is on the the staff site. You WILL be fined. Update: seems that the fines have been waived for staff etc until March. Not gospel though so until it comes directly from the horses mouth, be prepared :) edited by SueB on 18/01/2012

In the latest announcement in gulf news it also states that if your visa expires in 2012 it will be done upon renewal. Ours expire in July and as my daughter turns 15 in June I'm going to wait till renewal

I just got this from ek website hope it clarifies the fines system re-ek families. Q. Do you have labour cost advantages over say a European or Canadian carrier? A. All Emirates staff are on the company payroll and are not classed as government employees. Emirates incurs significant social costs to attract and retain the high proportion of staff recruited from around the world (Emirates employs 156 nationalities) on expatriate terms and conditions. On average every year, Emirates has to bear a total cost of over US$400 million for expatriate employee benefits – including accommodation costs for employees and children’s education for management, pilots, engineers and other staff – costs which carriers such as Air France, Lufthansa, Air Canada and Qantas do not incur. Emirates’ cost structure of 13.32 cents per available seat mile in 2007/08 is comparable to that of leading international airlines such as Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific, among others. So they clearly state we are not government employee's and therefore no fine should issued to ek employee's

Cherry ripe, they only need to see the passports when they do the initial typing. You should be able to get yours and the boys paperwork underway this week. If an appointment comes through for them while they are away you can just ring up and change it. edited by plum2 on 16/01/2012

Understood......but original passports are my problem. If I could do it with copies, I would go tomorrow. edited by Cherry ripe on 16/01/2012

Thanks for update pupa. Unfortunately my husband is travelling this week and my teenagers have a 2 week school trip next week, so its going to be early feb before we can even try to get this sorted. Have accepted that if we are fined, so be it, it is our mistake in delaying. We also hoped it would all be done with visas but it was not. you only need to do the typing in the first instance which you just take the original passports with visas in and then you shouldnt be fined the appointment is usually much later.

With EK employees and dependants - are they being fined Dhs20 daily up to the day they apply or till when they actually receive their ID card? Also, has anyone (EK) applied recently from outside EGHQ and got fined or is it only when you apply at EGHQ that they're applying these fines? I'm going to an authorised typing centre tmw so will let u know! Where do u actually pay the card fee along with the 30dhs for typing or when fingerprinting - does anyone know? edited by angela on 16/01/2012 you pay at the beginning when you do the typing. 100 each visa year, 30 for typing and 40 for the card

Thank you Cherry Ripe for posting about keeping things "friendly", I was starting to feel that those of us who hadn't done it yet were having the ol' finger wagged at us which wasn't helping matters. We renewed our visas at EK last February and were led to believe that the ID cards would be processed with our renewel and to our surprise they weren't. Then we also put it on the "to do" list for Jan/Feb since we had my parents here for all of November and then my in-laws through December until until Jan 4th! If only I could post a picture of my dining room table at the moment which is COVERED in paperwork. Visit visa application forms to be submitted, residency application forms stacked shoulder high for my DH to become a Canadian resident, birthing plans, birthing literature for our DS' arrival in April and lists of "things to do" which are slowly getting checked off. Harder to get through these days as I'm suffering from 3rd trimester lack of energy. I'm dreading spending a day at HQ getting these cards but will try to muster the will and "get it done".

Cherry ripe we also arrived in august (or DH, rest of us came a bit later, maybe you are our neighbour ;) ) and he was never informed that he needed to do id cards asap. Today though he went to a typing office and sorted it out and for now there was no mention of any fines. He payed 370*4 and it took him an hour in total, now we have to wait for sms for appointment.

Thankyou Just Sain. It is just so frustrating that the whole thing is so confusing. Everyone has a different story or problem or idea. I think it should just be done upon visa issue/renewal and save everyone the added hassle/expense.

I did not want to stir up the "you should have already done it" debate, as obviously a lot of people havent done it the first time or bothered to renew. Please do not turn the thread nasty. If you are an EK employee with relevant info I am interested in your experiences. Fair enough. Post deleted.

As I put in my original post, it was a question for EK employees experiences since we had been notified we had till march to complete and june as a dubai resident. It was not made clear to us that we fell in the government employees section. Having only arrived in august, we thought we would have had it issued with our visas but since this was not the case it was put on the "after christmas" list as we were busy buying property, renovating etc. I did not want to stir up the "you should have already done it" debate, as obviously a lot of people havent done it the first time or bothered to renew. Please do not turn the thread nasty. If you are an EK employee with relevant info I am interested in your experiences.

Lol very true one dept sometimes has no idea what the other is doing. E.g got an email telling me to get my ID by a certain date in 2011 (think it was July) so went and got it after much fuss. Then, manager asked why I got it when it's linked to visa renewal. *shrug* already had it so thought "whatever" next minute frantic rushing around from everyone else at work trying to get it done on days off. Kind of glad they "messed up" and told me to get one back then. I knew about this and I arrived here in 2010, not sure what everyone else was doing not to have noticed? I get that there was a lot of misinformation going around but in this place I think it's a case of better safe than sorry!! this has been going on for like 3 years now. yes when the eida wasnt organised and said that everyone needed them, for what, and people waited outside in the heat q'ing from like 5am and taking their kids out of school for what, but when it went quiet and you didnt have to stress about it people were still not doing it, so there has been no excuse people did have all the information its been in all the papers and on forums all the time. if you have less than 3 months on your visa then they will not do it anyways but any more then you still pay 100 for each year.

Just a reminder that maids/nannies/drivers etc need ID cards too. Counting our blessings that we got ours done earlier this year. Phew. And busybee, I am with you. WHY is this such a surprise to some people? Especially long time EW members? Not understanding at all. edited by ChilliPepper on 15/01/2012 everyone needs an id card even children, although children become adults at 15 so if you have kids under 15 then do it before their birthday and they dont need to come and do the fingerprinting. right at the beginning they required children to fill out the census form but not do the actual id, now its changed, and everyone requires an id card, yes the children may not have a use for it now, but eventually it will become their health card, medical card etc so if you use government hospitals etc then it will come in handy. so now people are complaining that they are actually being fined, when its been in the paper many times for all to see. dont rely on your hr depts do it yourself as we all know that quite often the right hand doesnt know what the left hand is doing. in abu dhabi you have to have an id card in order to avail of any traffic services, so when you get a new car etc you need one and that will affect people living in dubai as well, because a lot of you have visas issued in abu dhabi so you need to follow those rules.

I was at HQ today and was told that it would only be 20dhs per day so if we do the ID cards in the next week or so it should only amount to a few hundred dirhams rather than 1,000 per person. My DH has an expired UAE ID card so his is only a renewal so I'm not sure if there will still be fines for him and I put in my application in 2009 and then never followed up with the rest of the process so again not sure if I will have fines but will find out this week. if you put in your application orignally with the bar codes then you will have to start all over again, they are not valid.

children under 15 will not be fined yet. everyone else will be according to where they live. government employees in abu dhabi had to do it by dec 2011, and there is a different one for each emirate.

you will be able to do it online soon, the locals they now should be able to do, they said that for expats it will be online in a couple of months time, so that you can save the 30dhs fee.
