My 17 year old and her friend were in a near fatal car wreck on Friday night. Both were thrown from the vehicle which was credited for saving their lives. They were air lifted to a hospital in another town due to the remote location they were in and that was better equipped for severe trauma patients.

When they were found, they were both in and out of conciousnes and both very much in shock and un aware of who anyone was.

After they arrived to the hospital, they were given cat scans, mri's, etc to be sure they had no serious injuries. After 6 hours they were released with cuts and bruises. My daughter with a knee and back bruising as the vehicle rolled over her leg.

Now my daughter is complaining of severe hot flashes and my non chalant mother doesn't think its anything to worry about.

Has any one experienced these symptoms after a head or back injury? If so is it normal or is it something to be concerned about?

She is okay.. In a lot of pain. They did give antibiotics when they released her along with a heavy duty pain killer. THey have her at a doctor now for her follow up appointment. So will see.

BC, how's she been doing today? Did someone get her another check-up, or is she feeling better? My thoughts are with you and her. Sorry, I thought you first posted yesterday - she should still be peacefully asleep now, I hope. edited by simpleasabc on 07/03/2011

BC, can only reiterate that she sees another doctor and has some antibiotics in case of infection as well as pain relief.

We are packing up to leave dubai in the next week. I asked my daugher if she wanted me to come back now and she said no. I was ready to hop a flight that night, but she wants us to finish what we need to finish here so we will be back in the US sooner rather than later edited by bornconfused on 07/03/2011 Well I wish your DD well - safe journey getting back to her

|Sorry to ask a blunt question and I don't wish to offend but why don't you go and see her and get your dd seen to? If my DD were in a 'near fatal' crash, you'd have to chain me down to stop me getting to her. We are packing up to leave dubai in the next week. They were in a remote location out by some hot springs late in the evening. And by remote I mean they were 60 miles from civilization. They got a phone call that one of their friends was lost trying to find it. It was raining, she was speeding. She lost control on a turn that was covered in sand. Car dida 360, the back tire blew and sent it rolling. One says 3x the other says it was about 7x. So not real sure how many times as both are really loopy and don't remember anything after that. They had other friends that were already in the location who happened to be looking in the direction they were driving and noticed the car lights making circular motions then left flickering on and off. As they were driving to the area they had called the emergency number to report the accident. For some strange reason that night a cop was out in the area for some other reason and was on scene within 5 min. He didn't wait for the ambulance crews to arrive he called for the life flights from the town to respond. Which only took about 10 min for them to get on scene. Everyone thought they were dead since they weren't moving or making any noise. The kids were smart enough to leave them un-touched but covered them with blankets to try and keep them warm.

Unfortunately in the State of California and in this case the State of Nevada, neither one keep trauma patients for long due to financial constraints. Everyone was surprised that both girls were released. All I can say is those two girls had someone on their side. The chain of events that led to their rescue doesn't just happen.

Wow! After an accident like that I am shocked to hear they released her after only 6hrs. I was once in a head on collision, sitting in the front seat with NO seat belt :( (I was a kid and it was on a quiet country road). I was extremely lucky (!!!) with no major injuries but they still admitted me to hospital and wouldn't release me for 48hrs so they could be 100% sure I was ok. Even though they say your DD is ok due to no fever its such a shame they still won't keep her in at least overnight to monitor her. I really hope she is ok after this accident! Took me years to get the horror out of my mind and still to this day I cannot bear to drive on a single lane road where you cannot see whats coming from the opposite direction. Hugs to your DD!! edited by shellly on 07/03/2011

I have called the discharging hospital and the hospital in the town that she lives in and both have said that unless a fever is present there is no cause for concern. The discharging hospital stated she received multiple lacerations over 30% of her back. They dug glass out of her legs and back as well. They stated she received a lot of trauma and the hot flashes are normal with these types of injuries since the body is in pain. If a fever becomes present then it is cause for concern.

Yes - back to the hospital or doctor. Glad she is ok - where in the US did this occur? May be able to make a recommendation.

Just call your mum and say to her that if she wont take your daughter back to the hospital straight away, then you will call someone who will. Get your daughter to get one of her friends mums to take her...she needs an advocate, and she needs to be checked out again.

Is she having hot flashes when she is standing up or moving around? Together with a wave of dizziness and/or nausea? If she is having some bleeding somewhere, this would be consistent with that. (90% of internal haematoma will resolve themselves so they tend to get ignored, the wait and see approach does usually work - it's if you are the 10% that it gets a bit rough and your mother doesn't want to wait until she collapses) BC not trying to frighten you, but yeah, she should get checked out. Good luck.

From experience, you need to send her with someone older and sensible, who will advocate on her behalf and push to get her seen and not leave until they are thoroughly satisfied. Someone who will be firm, calm and reasonable...but firm with the staff. The staff need to empty their beds asap, but if you can get someone to go with her who will stand their ground in a calm manner, this will get her properly checked out and kept for observation, which sounds like the minimum she needs. Call in favours with whoever to get her over there pronto. Option 2. Ring the hospital who saw her and ask to speak to staff who checked her out. Ring the hospital in your town - anything to give you ammo with your mother and more info on what could be going wrong.

My mother says there is no fever. The only possible place for blood clotting is in her knee which looks like a watermelon. But clots can move within the blood stream from the point of forming to anywhere in the body. As Singapore Sling says, not everything can show up on initial scans and there could be delayed problems. Either way, she needs to go back, no two ways about it.

Not refering to your DD BUT tell your mom it could be anything from bruised kidneys to whiplash, concussion, etc and not all injuries always show up on scans. Edit to add - or those mentioned by Chocs. edited by Singapore Sling on 07/03/2011

If your daughter is having hot flashes, could be a sign of fever, which could mean there could be some kind of infection. Bad bruising can carry risks of blood clots. She really really has to go back to the hospital. If your mother is refusing, can you not get one of your daughters friends, or friends mothers to take her?

You need to take her back to the hospital and get her checked again. Any extra symptoms or problems that arise after an accident require attention. I wouldn't like to speculate, but it could be any number of things. Better safe than sorry. The vehicle rolled over her and yet didn't break anything? She sounds incredibly lucky. Honestly, don't sit here on the computer, get her checked out asap. edited by Chocs01 on 07/03/2011 SHe doesn't live with me. She lives in the US. If it WAS with me I WOULD have already hauled her in. As I said my non chalant mother doesn't want to waste her time edited by bornconfused on 07/03/2011 Sorry, got confused by the post a little. Well you need to get your mother to take her back to the hospital asap.

I haven't been in a major car wreck like that, but if I were you, I would take your daughter straight back to the hospital. Any strange symptoms after an accident like that should not be taken lightly.
