It's all over Twitter, following this ad:

A very British Royal Wedding Garden Party
Date : April 29, 2011
Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club
Cost:
AED 450 per person including buffet and unlimited house drinks
AED 300 per person including buffet and unlimited soft drinks
AED 100 per child aged 6-12
Free for children under six years old
Entry for maids is AED 100 (including children’s buffet and non-alcoholic drinks) when accompanying their sponsor family, or free entry without refreshments

If that is not reinforcing the stereotype.......

Sorry ladies but this just keeps me thinking: in true British style = Entry for maids is AED 100 (including CHILDREN’s buffet and non-alcoholic drinks) Well, then I'll pass on the stereotypical-colonizing-arrogant style :( , really!!! - Yes but WHO really goes to the Polo Club????? ;) The AR lot.

Finally a voice of reason. I was wondering why nobody thought the prices were not quite value for money . . . and I'm wondering why folks think it's ok, maybe even generous, to offer a working all day adult, a childrens buffet, sheesh, I'd most certainly pay for the option without alcohol on their behalf. She can't have a beer then?

[i'>We’ve got a full day and evening of entertainment planned to mark one of the most exciting events our nation has experienced in years – a very British Royal Wedding! Our traditional British street-party-themed spectacular celebrates the Best of British. Start the day off by celebrating in true British style. Watch Wills and Kate get hitched on the big screen whilst enjoying a lavish all-you-can-eat buffet packed with British culinary delights. We’ll also have a British market where you can shop for exclusive wedding memorabilia as well as a range of lovely British products, with lots of fun activities and entertainers from Double Decker on hand to keep the kids happy. Then kick back and relax for the rest of the afternoon while you watch the polo, undoubtedly one of the world’s most elite and exciting sports. Often referred to as the ‘Sport of Kings’ and certainly a favourite of our own Royal princes, it’s the perfect way to while away a few hours on this most royal of occasions. Finish off truly memorable day with a night of dancing to the best British music from the past 50 years. We’ve got something for everyone with a musical mash-up of everything from Britpop, Glam Rock, Disco, Indie and Madchester to the top dance, pop and rock hits from the 00’s. Rule Britannia![/i'> Wow :-/ Poor grammar (almost reads like it's written by a non-native English speaker) and use of the phrase "Rule Britannia"... just... wow.

I wish I could go for the kids buffet: I always prefer the finger fish, mini burgers, nuggets, chips and cupcakes to the boring "adult" food. I'l pay my 100 and keep an eye on your kids if any of you ladies are willing to sneak me in as your maid ;)

What's "disgusting" about it? The maid is there to look after the kids so it makes perfect sense for her to eat at their buffet, doesn't it? Or am I missing something dark and mysterious? The dark and mysterious thing that you're missing is a sense of respect for another adult who you happen to employ to look after your children. If I were a maid and you did that to me, you can be sure I would not be respecting you, doesn't exactly bode well for a good working relationship does it. Well said lites. AmyAus82, that's not the same scenario at all. I would not expect the waiters or the maitre d' to sit down and eat at the next table but in this case the events organiser had a choice of how to set this up, hardly their problem if people attending is a maid or a driver or whatever, isn't everyone a guest to them? They could say anyone entering has to pay for the dinner at the same price and has equal rights of what to eat. No, instead the maids are singled out, it's simply ridiculous. Not sure I have ever heard about a similar thing before. Rule Britannia, indeed!

I am curious to know who will be attending the event. Will it only be Brits or do you think other nationalities will be celebrating too? I think it will be anyone who normally attends these sort of things irrelevant of the RW.

Not sure if you're asking there, lol But in the situation you're exampling, I'd expect time to go and eat at my employers expense if he's taken me away from home for a day. The scenario we're discussing is a long day event for maids and families.

Hold on a minute, if you were working say as an Aide to someone, and they were going to a function, and you had to go along to assist them and do your job; are you saying that you would be expecting to sit at the function and enjoy the same service as your boss - or would you expect to be working? In this situation and many others the same.

I would expect a decent reimbursement for my meals if the hours I put in merited it.

I think it's appalling that maids are charged less for entry, they should be classed as an adult and pay the same as everyone else, why should everyone else fund maids eating? Why are people even taking maids, can't anyone look after their own children in this country? Yes, in complete agreement with you here. and... yes that's my Western perspective, it's about respecting and earning respect. Treating adults I trust with my kids as worthy people. I'd be very happy to pay for her adult meal whether or not she chose to eat it. Rather that, than belittle her as a person. If we go into the belittling and what maids actually thought about their employers, well it might be a bit of a shock for many! LOL Re the respect, in that case if a maid was to attend they should sit with the family at the same cost as an adult in nice clothes (not those awful outfits) and be paid extra for working on a friday. Hmm, wonder how many would actually do that? LOL

Maybe it's by mutual agreement where the maid gets another day off in lieu, and is happy to work. Maybe she gets a bonus too. You can't assume that every person bringing a maid is someone who makes the maid work on her time off regularly, or for no compensation.

I am left wondering why any of you think it is OK to even consider taking a maid with you. Its a Friday! They should be off. Look after your own children. Or are you all the types who take their maids to push the shopping trolley!

I wouldn't pay 100 dirhams for anyone to eat the children's buffet at the Polo Club. It was so bad at their Christmas Eve brunch that even the flies wouldn't touch it. Yuck.
