Don't get me started on queues.. we are lined up patiently then someone walks straight to the front. I used to be too scared to say anything but not anymore ;) Agree- and add to that the non existant concept of 'personal space'. I was in Choithram a few days ago and a man put his things in front of mine at the check out! Thought he was with the children in front but it turned out he wasn't! Then yesterday I was queuing and turned to look at a magazine and banged in to a guy who was stood way too close!

I hate it when you are trying to get out of a lift or the metro and they all rush to get in.. Many a time i have stuck my elbows out to stop them shoving me out of the way. My colleague actually pushed a guy back when he tried to get in the lift as he was getting out. He didnt do it in an agressive way however the guys face was a picture so i doubt he will do it again! Yes that's another thing! I still can't get my head around the fact that manners are not universal!!

Yes that's another typical thing here, they don't let you get out of a lift before trying to get in. Makes no sense at all. Just delays everyone pushing around ina small space all trying to go in different directions. Where is the common sense, never mind the manners :\:

I do find that things that would come naturally to us like MANNERS and helping pregnant ladies does not figure in these peoples heads. Not a personal thing I don't think, it's just like the numerous times I have held the door open for someone and they don't say a word! Keep your chin up!;) Was just about to write the same, I hold a door for somebody and they strut through without so much as a nod.... Plain rude!!

I realised that I'd changed in the way I get things done when I heard myself doing the finger wagging Dubai Diva thing with some poor guy who was trying a boat too fast in Borneo this summer! I'm surprised he didn't throw me into the sea!

Unfortunately - Welcome to Dubai. I have never been anywhere in my life with more unpleasant, rude, inconsiderate people, this covers all people, from every place on earth. Worst thing is living here it makes you worse, and even sometimes the nice people end up being the rude ones :) As the lady on Dubai 92 said this morning, for newbies, don't forget your sense of humour, you will definitely need it here or you WILL go mad!! So true....Im a nice person but sometimes I have to be a total diva to get by in this city and I hate that feeling.

CABear I feel for you. I went in a taxi the other day, and the taxi driver didn't help with all my shopping and I was really struggling to put the pushchair in the boot whislt keeping a eye on DS so he wouldn't run on the road and the driver didn't move to help... I can assure you this guy did not get a tip!!

I can sympathise hun, I am also pregnant with my third. I came home yesterday after a long day on the office to find a water tanker parked infront of my driveway. 8 men were all standing around some roadworks were there had been a leak a few days before. So I stop my car and ask one of the men if the driver of the tanker can move forward to let me park my car. All of the me start laughing and shaking their heads, in a very patronising manner (who is this woman asking us to do something). The reply I got was we are working!!!!! your reply should have been "move it now or i call the police" accompanied with getting your phone out and dialing the police. It didn't even occur to me, I was so tired and hot and desperate for the loo!! Took all my gumption not to break down into floods of tears (hormones). First time I have felt intimidated since moving here, and I have been to some pretty scary countries over the years. Still not long until the move back to the UK, where the answer would have been 'sorry love, let me move up a bit'.

Sometimes my son leaves the taxi door open and I pretend I don't notice while I'm gathering all my belongings that the driver leaves on the ground.

Thanks for all your kind words! I do meet lots of kind people too. Some days are worse than others. On a good note - I live in Discovery Gardens and it looks like they are filling the pools today!! Yay!!

I replied no you're not your all standing around staring into a hole in the road. The driver reluctantly got into the cab, stretched and took around 5 minutes to start the engine. By this time I was fuming but still in my car, refusing to move. I managed to park, got out of the car and turned to face them all (they were all doing the usual stare) once they saw the mega bump, they all looked thoroughly ashamed of themselves. I have been here for 3 years and find that the levels of rudeness in all areas is increasing.

There was a thread about PITA taxi drivers recently. I laughed when one poster said that if a taxi driver was really unhelpful she would close the back door gently enough to latch it but not close it completely so that the driver had to get out and close the door himself. You should try that CABear ;)

Have to say CABear, you've got to be one of the bravest people I know (or don't know!) - I hate venturing out with my young kids and I have a car! I'm also from California (with 11 month old twins and a nearly 3 DD) and if you need any help, let me know. [email protected] I agree! I hate going out alone here with the kids beyond where we can walk to (and even that is stressful!) We don't have a car and going anywhere with a 2,3, and 6 year old just seems overwhelming without DH. It is definitely been one of the hardest adjustments for me because at home we were always going somewhere.

i agree with DH - tell the taxi drive to get off his far a$$ and help!!! Yes I agree too, you do tend to have to just tell them if you want things doing or you could be waiting around forever!

Oh you poor soul, what a struggle you are having. I don't get people at all, yesterday was pushing my trolley back to the car and found a young woman in tears and very shaken because some woman ina car had nearly run her over and then screamed abuse at her from the window for being in[i'> her [/i'>way. I hope you get your car soon and things will be so much easier for you.
