My maid has just told me that she would love to have a sewing machine as she loves to sew and make things. Her daughter gave her some money to help buy one but she was asking me if I could help her find something on Dubizzle as she doesn't know how to look for things on there.
I had a look but NOTHING!!
So I'd like to help her to buy a new one.
But I am CLUELESS.
I did a quick search and you can buy sewing machines for anything from 300Dhs to thousands. Clearly the higher end stuff is rather professional and not what she needs. But if I get her a 500Dhs one, is it going to be decent?? I know how to compare computers but not sewing machines!! Are there any particular specs I should be paying attention to or is a sewing machine a sewing machine??
On souq then have a brand called Janome that I've never heard of but DH says is quite well known and they have ones for a few hundred.
The only brand I know is Singer and I don't know if they do ones for just a few hundred.
Am on my way to Carrefour and to Geant today so thought I'd have a peak in there but any advice would be very much appreciated.
Thanks very much.

I've just bought one today (Brother) from E Max in MCC and it was cheaper than any in Carrefour. Now I just need to learn how to use it!

Thanks ladies. Looks like we can go ahead with a C4 one then. Lynett, I will ask her if she does embroidery. I actually have no idea how basic or advanced her skills are. thanks again Lynett... could you let me know how much you want for yours? You can email me at mercedes dot king71 at gmail dot com edited by m_king on 06/07/2012

You can't go wrong with any of those models mentioned, i.e. Brother, Janome, or Singer. I have used all three and, for a basic model, it is all you need. Stay away from computerized as much as possible -- basic stitches, buttonholes, etc. Inexepensive models are really all you need if you just want to sew.

Ginnee is right, simple is probably good for a beginner. I think probably you'd be looking for one with a smaller range of stitches - running, zig zag, button-holing and perhaps a few others. Perhaps 25 in all. It should be able to change presser feet and hopefully come kitted with 4 or 5. Ideally it should be full size and a decent weight - not too lightweight or it may not be sturdy enough to cope with heavier fabrics. Your DH is right, Janome is a great brand, as is Singer, Brother. Ask a sewer and we all have our personal preferences and are generally loyal to that brand, but you can't go wrong with those 3, I think. Brother have a good range of affordable entry level machines so if you see one of those at a decent price I would snaffle it up.

I recently bought myself a little singer from c4. It was 4 hundred and something dirhams and because of my C4 frequent use card I got a 50dhs voucher. It's a simple machine, but it does the job well, I prefer simple, not over-complicated.
