My children have been Offered places at GEMS DSO. Can anyone tell me about Silicon Oasis. What facilities are there? Are there places to walk the dog? Is it a nice family community?

To me, DSO is the most central point in Dubai. No, other place in dubai is literally one minute away from motorways. You live the compound and the option of al ain road, emirates road and by pass road are all under 2 minutes away. Emirates road to either direction, are accessible. Choitrams, Spinneys, costa, starbucks, a bookstore, MMI, a video rental, several groceries and laundries and 2 pharmacies, are all in the area. MCC and dubai mall are just 12 minutes, 15 minutes to festival, 20 mins to central shiekh zayed, jumeirah and deira. 15 minutes to city hospital and American, 10 minutes to AR. The furthest points are 25 minutes to MOE and half an hour to New dubai bits, like emirates living, marina and the rest. The roads are great, no construction, pretty roundabouts. All in all a fab fab fab place to live. and yet when it opened, the shrieks of horror from the pilots at the idea that anyone could be expected to actually live there, buried in the desert, half way to Al Ain...... how things change (apart from the complaining of the pilots of course....)

Can anyone tell me please what apartment blocks are nice and near the school?? TIA :) The closest to the school would be The Springs at Silicon Oasis (not to be confused with Springs at Jumeirah!) I think The Springs Building DSO is also one of the nicest (its the one with the Choithams in the bottom right?)

Thank you ladies for your feedback. Would you suggest that I lease via DSO authority or via individual agents? Which buildings would you recommend? Sorry for asking so many questions. I have no clue about this community and plan to visit this weekend to get an idea. We live in Motor City at the moment, love the community, unfortunately aircon bills are getting way beyond our budget. edited by NikitaD on 25/01/2012

There should be quite a few villas available in phase 1. We moved out in February along with at least 4 other lots of neighbours and the last time I went past none of them were occupied. That was only in one street!

SuzyDuzy - what year are you children in? We have just had confirmation today that my daughter will join yr4 and my son yr2. Now we can get on organising the rest of the relocation. I'm visiting in a couple of weeks and hope to be able to find somewher to live. We have been offered a villa on Springs 6 but i'm thinking it might be too far from school. I like your thinking re play dates. Hi Betti, we are about to move to DSO with places also at Gems DSO. From my limited knowledge, Phase 1 and Phase 2 are exactly the same in terms of the types of villas offered - literally same price, same styles (traditional or modern), and 3, 4 or 5 brms. For me, I liked Phase 1 best (or Clusters ABC&D) because it has a lovely big park, playground, pool, tennis court, volleyball smack bang in the middle. So all of the villas are built around this as it is the focal point. Phase 2, or what I believe to be, is on the other side of the road - and the villas are in rows. So, there is no big park like the one I just described, but they do have some pools spread throughout. The are basic, pools, but hey, they do the job! There are indeed some parks, or green grass, but no 'playground' as such. My children are young, so the playground thing is important for me. So for me, the biggest difference is the 'feeling'. Not as many trees and greenery in Phase 2, but it is closer to Spinneys..... in any case, Phase 2 is not far from Phase 1. I know for a fact there are villas in Phase 2, but regret that the options in Phase 1 are very limited, if they exist at all. I believe we were incredibly lucky to find one in Phase 1. But we got booted out of our house after just one month because the LL decided to sell, we we deserve some luck!!! Phase 1 or Phase 2, I think the community looks lovely, and I think the school will really bring some harmony to it because loads of kids, that know each other, will be living close by to each other. We were at another great Gems school, but play dates were complicated as we discovered that we all lived in different parts... so this will be a nice change - walking to a neighbors house to play!

If you are lucky you may find also a villa :) Not a lot on the market, but.... Good luck :) Try Phase 2 Cedre Villas. More empty than not! What's wrong with phase 2 then? Or is it just because it's new?

The location of Silicon Oasis is really nice and convenient. It's right off of Emirates rd and 66. You can get to mirdif city center in 10 mins, airport in 20 and Dubai mall in 15 mins from 44. There's a Spinney's, Choithrams, and a few small grocery stores as well. Restaurants from Mirdif and international city deliver here too. Its quiet, still being developed but the apartments and villas are all nice because they're new.
