I had two different taxi drivers change their price on me today, to get me from my hotel to the marina... I also asked them (being new I thought they'd help) about using the metro service but they told me it didn't go far and I was better of with a taxi. Then I noticed as the taxi drove me out to my accommodation near the airport that the metro service was close by. I'm just wanting to get my way around to discover things if you could recommend how I best do it if I don't yet have a car. Thank you in advance

If I was in your shoes, I would take a map of Dubai, locate the where I am and where I wish to visit. And see Metro / Tram etc located around. Gold NOL card is best suited for most cases as it gets crowded in regular section. Cab can be replace with Uber service. https://www.uber.com/cities/dubai cab can be reported if not on meter.

First of all a taxi driver can't change the price to suit him. He has to run his meter or you can report him. Unless you have been using the luxury taxis (Lexus cars without taxi signs) who don't always have a meter. Don't use them as they can be a total rip-off. Only use Lexus taxis with meters, they are more expensive but at least you know what you should be paying. A regular taxi can't make up their own prices. There is a difference in flag-fall rate (5AED when flagged on the street, an 8AED when you order a taxi by phone) If you want to know how to get around Dubai, use the Wojhati website or download the app to your phone. It will show you any busses that run to the metro station nearest you, and in general is a journey planning website.

The Metro will take you in a straight line, all the way from the out beyond the airport to the Jebel Ali. It is very good value for money. Get yourself a silver Nol card from the metro station and you can then travel on all RTA transport, except taxi's. Taxi's probably hate the metro as they lose customers from it - sometimes. The problem with the metro is if you live nowhere near it - it is pointless & you will need a taxi. edited by pollydxb1 on 14/03/2015
