1. Where can I get my haircut that is good and close to the Palm? Please note that I spent 40min yesterday trying to find a gas (petrol) station so my ability to get around Dubai is stunted until I learn my way around.

2. I really really want to go see Maroon 5 but not alone. Are there any ladies interested in joining me or letting me join them?

Hi, welcome to Dubai and EW! Re car choice you might find this site helpful - the ulitmate car buyer guide. Lists EVERY SINGLE manufacturer / model that is, or has been, available here and notes standard dealer list price when new, power, torque, fuel economy, bhp and top speed, and you can compare stats from various vehicles via a handy table it puts together for you. It was our absolute bible when researching a new car. Also note that very often the price when you get to a dealer will be much less if looking at a 2010 model and they are looking to clear their stock for 2011 & 2012 (we shaved 40k aed from a car originally priced at 169k). http://www.drivearabia.com/ultimatecarbuyerguide/ I also commute daily to AD ..... I find the drive absolutely fine, if not a bit boring. Watch the speed tho, new limit is now 140km p/hr with zero tolerance and its radar'd so no speeding up between the cameras (dull, but makes for a safer, albeit more boring drive). Hope you find a good car! LLx edited by Loopy Lotti on 17/04/2011

Hi Tips and toes on the Palm does eyebrow threading. I am also looking for a new car. I have been looking at a Hyundai Tucson or a Kia Sportage, they both seem pretty good value, starting at about 63000AED going up to about 85000AED for the top of the range model. They are both pretty similar cars

Hi Ruby, Yes I thought of buying used but since I wll be driving to AD everyday I would rather have the warenty of a new car. I don't have the best luck with cars and I am alone here so a used car is a great idea but not for me. LOL I am was born and raised in Detroit Michigan but my home is now in Florida. Oh thanks for the nail spa info I will give it a whirl. I am glad your car is working out for you.

Hi Emmaglow. Have you thought about buying used on Dubizzle? We found a great second car on there. We were kind of picky about it. Just make sure the previous owner took care of it. We even had it inspected at the dealership before purchasing, and he released all prior maintenance info to us before we committed to buying. We payed for the inspection but it has been great. As far as eyebrows I always go to the nail spa. There are a few locations in Dubai but I have always has great service. I tend to use the one at the Dubai Mall, but I have also been to the Ibn Battuta branch. Where are you from in the US?

Emmaglow, if you just cab down to JBR one weekend there are a zillion beauty salons that will do eye brow threading. Appointment shouldnt be necessary. Re your car, depends on what you want I guess but for a car priced at around 80,000 you will be looking at about 2500 dhs per month for your car loan. Usually cheaper than renting. And 80,000 will buy you a nice car too, if you are looking at less, I think a Yaris for sale is around the 40,000 mark and Kia and Hyundai cheaper again. I find cars much cheaper to buy and run here than Australian but not sure what they charge in the US. A new car is a good idea as generally comes with 3 - 5 year warranty and sometimes free insurance and servicing. This will save you a LOT of hassle. Coming from experience, my first car here was a 2nd hand Peugeot (dont do it - they arent made for the middle east and are the crappest cars ever) and it caused me nothing but problems with no assistance as all from the 2nd car dealer I brought it from. Once you have your licence, car, insurance and salik, no more dramas other than your occasional service. Good luck! PS - if you can wait until June there may be some good deals during Dubai Summer Surprises, sale isnt just for clothes, cars too! edited by Kylie2810 on 17/04/2011 edited by Kylie2810 on 17/04/2011

Barbeidoll - thanks for the warm welcome. So far I like it although I have not done much as am trying to get the place sorted and I work in Abu Dhabi. The commute is ok but I can't tell you how much better I feel coming home to the lovely view and and quiteness. It's so nice. So if any are still reading, I also need my brows threaded and the salon does hair only. AND I am renting a car at the moment so any advise on a brand/type of car that would be good for me to buy would be great. I am overwhelmed and also being from the USA I am shocked at the cost of cars here. They are much more money here. I know they are less for almost everyone else but please have mercy on a single gal trying to make it in the UAE. LOL

I live on the Palm. The petrol station off of SZR coming from Dubai right before the ramp onto the Palm is one station. The other station I use: when leaving the Palm and the road divides stay to the left, get on the beach road and go along until you get to the very proper traffic (where Jumeriah Madinat is) light and bear right get off the beach road and move over to the left. At the traffic light take a left onto Al Wasl Road getting onto the right of the road. Not too far down you will find a station on your right. edited by Crystil on 17/04/2011

The easiest petrol station if you live on The Palm is on the slip road comming off Sheikh Zahed Road. If you are driving down SZR from Dubai direction to get on the Palm you take the slip road for The Palm and the Marina, just before you turn onto the road leading directly to the Palm there is a petrol station with Burger King. Once you have filled up with petrol you can just rejoin the road which will the take you onto the Palm. Hope this makes sense.

Welcome to Dubai emmaglow :) Re the car washers, I often find the price is 16 dhs or 18 dhs, therefore often its easier to just give them a 20 and the tip is built in. If the car is particuarly dirty I will slip them another 5 dhs!

Thank you lovely ladies. I have made my appointment at Ted Morgan. I will post another thread for Maroon 5. Also one more silly question, when getting your car washed in the mall do you tip the cleaner as they want the money before they work? MiniMax - thanks for the petrol station info. I am sure it will come in handy. I usually give them extra and just ask that they do a really good job - have never been let down.....so far.....

Another recommendation for Ted Morgan - especially as it's actually on The Palm! Re Maroon 5 you would be better putting up another new thread entitled maroon 5 and then you'll get maroon 5 people answer you. Welcome to Dubai!

Hi and welcome to Dubai from me too! I would also recommend Ted Morgan - they are in the first building on the trunk on the right (although you have to go around the other side to get to it). Lovely girls and I have always been very happy with my hair. Re petrol there are so many petrol stations about but one of the most frustrating things about the roads here is that you see the petrol station but you are on the wrong side of the road or have missed the entry road and cant turn around! Once you find your way around it will get easier. I would drive down the Beach Road, past the Jum Beach Hotel / Burj Al Arab and there are a few petrol stations along there, you can do a U turn at the lights and then drive back towards the Palm again. Cant help with Maroon 5 but hope you get sorted and enjoy!

Welcome to Dubai! Try Ted Morgan on the Palm for your haircut. Google for contact details. Great salon. I can recommend Elaine but she's very busy so might take a while to get an appointment. I would be happy to try any of their other stylists too.
