hello ladies.. we are planning to move out soon to a place with a maids room (so far been in two bedrooms and had given her the guest room with a agreement that we would move out soon to a place where she will be given a maids room so the guests room is free for us.
we may consider moving into a villa (currently in an apartment) for more space for my baby however need some perspective on what would be the best
1. Villa or apartment: since the baby is very small there would be a lot of running around required behind him and having to climb up and down (to fetch things or change diaper etc) maybe a task...
2. Should we opt for a place where Maid stays out of the house (same villa) or a maids room inside like it is in apartments - would it be difficult to access her or awkward to call her incase we need something etc? or its better for her to be outside (the best is having our own space at the end of the day) but she needs to also babysit my baby if we go out in evenings etc and would that be difficult to manage if she is living outside
Thnk you

Thanks for the replies. Suppose him and I will have that to talk about too... lol. I guess we will have to decide on that after we get there since neither of us really know what we are getting into with the sand. I never had, needed or wanted a maid. To get back to the topic of this thread though, in case the OP returns at all, if I was ever forced to have one her room would most definitley be outside of the house. edited by chezmoi on 05/02/2015

I'm new to these boards and haven't even moved to Dubai yet. Actually we are in the planning and research page so I've been reading everything I can get my eyes on at the moment. This thread is a foregin concept to me. My BF/Future Husband and I never plan on having kids. It's just me Him and the dog. So I'm wondering if a Maid is even necessary? Does anyone on here not have a maid at all? Just curious. Thanks for any replies! I've never had one

To lilac, yes it was a weird concept to us too. No, not everyone has one, but most do employ a helper part time if they don't get someone full time. Obviously, depends how big your house is and whether you want to make the time to sweep, vacuum, dust daily because of all the sand that enters these houses. Lots of people here work really long hours and haven't got family around to help. For around $20 a day, we have a full time helper which then allows us to explore Dubai at night ( we have 3 little ones) and allows me to do double school runs each day without dragging all the kids with me if they are asleep, hungry, grumpy etc and of course, my house is spotless without having to argue with my husband whose turn it is to clean etc. If you are lucky to be referred somebody trustworthy they are great, but have heard many horror stories too. Sometimes, if you opt for a partiime helper from an agency, they send different people each time, which can be hard to trust.

We have a cleaner comes in twice a week, 4 hours one day and 2 hours another. She goes right through hoovers, mops, does the bathroom, dusts and does a little ironing if I have any and then I just do the rest as I need to, so only slightly less than I did back in the UK

Outside, more privace but would install cameras or you have to trust her keep an eye on her. My friends maid used to live outside but sneaked out in the middle of the night. It's not legal to record people without their consent or knowledge

outside all the way. you both get so much more privacy. we have a small baby too and both work. she is in the house from 8.15 until 6 when she leaves. if she babysits, she pops in at the agreed time. she has the weekend off and it's a nice ritual as she leaves on thurday night. love her, but it is nice to have the space, on both sides.

Oh my goodness, this one is to me a no -brainer. OUT! If she's in an outside room and you need her, you can call her in but short of locking her in, theres nothing you can do to safeguard your privacy if she's living inside. We have a lovely helper I trust, and have a great relationship with, but living inside together drives us nuts - we can't get away and we've both lost our privacy. Never again.

Our maids room is outside and we have a baby. Much prefer this so she doesn't hear any issues with the kids while she is off duty throughout the night and she can privacy when not working. She is happy to sit on our sofa and watch our tv if we go out in the evenings and during the day, if our child is asleep and we need to go out, she just does some quiet jobs downstairs and then has her break when we return.

Lots of villas have an inside ensuite maid's room with an outside door. If she is looking after a baby i'd say it would be easier if she is inside the house.. But the maid herself may prefer to have her room away from the house so that when she goes off duty she can switch off properly..(I would prefer that too, rather than having her in my house 24/7).

How many hours a day do you expect your maid to work? Is she on constant call or does she finish at a specified time?

As far as issues go, this is quite a nice one! (maid inside or outside?) My twopenny's worth or whatever is the expression: if I had a big family with older children I would have the maids room outside; and if I had little ones and babies I would have the maid inside.

I would suggest inside maids room. Then you can pop out and leave her in her room with the baby monitor on. [b'>You could not leave baby if she was not inside your house. Then she would have to physically sit in your house and babysit.[/b'> ....so the maid can clean the house all day, but not physically sit in it once the sun goes down to watch the baby? I'm confused... Beebers, I have a feeling the poster meant if the OP needs to pop out while baby is taking a nap and the maid is in her private area doing her own thing, she would need to leave everything and go in the house in order to be able to keep an eye on the baby if her room is separate from the house, whereas if the maid's room is in the house, she can simply carry on with whatever and simply use a baby monitor due to the range of the monitors.

I have had both set-ups and both have their pros and cons. It is nice to have privacy in the house when the maid's room is outside. However, for babysitting purposes, it is much easier to have the maid's room inside...

I'd say an outside room is more comfortable. And get a walkie talkie or a buzzy bell so you can call her when u need her to come. If u are going out late you could also have her bring a mattress into the house for that night.

Outside if possible in order to keep privacy for both of you.
