Where do you buy furniture for your maid?

Hey girls,

Need to furnish our maids room, it's pretty small but I'd like to make it nice and homey. My problem is the bed, we want a full length one but preferably one which is slightly narrower than a standard single- the door in the room is in an odd place so we need to be creative with the space.

Any advice? I've been to pan emirates, lulu and ikea so far. There is a nice bed in ikea which has plenty of room for storage underneath but it is single size so a little bigger than we'd like.

I'm not trying to squeeze a poor lady in by the way, just make the best use of the space :)

Any input welcomed! I know people talk about going to satwa but I find the place confusing so unless I have a specific shop to venture to I don't tend to go!

Thanks!

Got our maids bed from Satwa. AED350 inc 'best mattress'. Did look in Ikea but poor quality for the price - so opted for lower priced Satwa edited by beechwooddale on 01/10/2011

Another small room here! (in the Lakes) :( We got ours at Homes R Us in Ibn Battuta - fits perfectly as its narrow but not too narrow for her and she says its very comfortable. Still leaves space for a chest of drawers that she also puts her TV on. I think including the mattress it was under AED500. Helps that she's a tiny thing though ;)

Trip to Ikea made, bed bought, thanks ladies! They have a base and mattress that is 80x200, it wasn't on display, only the 90x200s were but a nice lady working there told us they do them in the narrower size. The base goes on legs so some of the Ikea plastic storage boxes fit underneath for extra storage. The kids beds seemed to be around 160cm in length so a bit too short for our 160cm tall helper but might be ok for someone smaller.

Thanks both, looks like a trip to Ikea will be in order then, either for a "child's" bed or a day bed. I agree the architects have a lot to answer for, I would happily lose some space in the rest of the apartment to give the maid's room a little extra space and in fact that was one of the things we were hoping to achieve when moving (our current "maids room" could probably only fit a couple of cushions on the floor!) Very frustrating as for the sake of a random bit of jutting out wall that has no purpose being there (I am sure there is nothing behind it!) we could have got a regular single bed in! my rant over too!

We have the same problem finding a bed small enough for the shamefully sized maid's room in our apartment. Shoot the architects! Anyway, we have found a bed in the "children's" dept of ikea which extends into the limited space she will have. I, like you all, want to make the room as nice as possible. If only the responsible party had seen the bigger picture - not only is it unreasonable to expect people to sleep in such a small space especially when most of the houses and apartments are spacious, but it's a real pain in the behind for the tenants/owners to find suitable furniture for such small spaces. There, rant over....for now!

Nope I'm afraid not! We got a daybed thing from ikea which is full length but 80cm width instead of ninety. It has two massive storage drawers under it which was helpful. Unless you are going down the toddler bed route I found nothing that was not standard size to be honest. I went to lulu, c4, hyperpanda, ikea and pan emirates in the end!

Hey Romeoandfin, did you manage to find any solution to the bed issue? Looks like we might be in the same pickle!! Our maids room has a nice big built in wardrobe and the bathroom is a good size but struggling a little with placing a normal sized bed! We'll also put a TV on the wall and any extra shelves she wants but want to make sure she has something she can sleep comfortably in that still allows her to move about the room ok. Thanks!

That's where I got our maid's bed from too. It is full length but slightly smaller than a single. I also managed to put a small wardrobe in her room as well which I got from Ikea. She also has shelving in her room to for her TV and laptop.
