We're moving to Dubai next month and I'm a nursing mother of a 2 month old and a very active 2 year old. I'm very comfortable nursing in public, but also recognize that I'm going to be in a new culture and new environment that might not be as open to this as I'm used to. What kinds of reactions/responses have other moms gotten for nursing their babies in public in Dubai? Do you generally use a nursing cover?

Ilovewine, I think it depends on you and your baby if you can go uncovered. I was very large chested when I was feeding, and would've found it very difficult to feed uncovered and still feel modest, when my smaller chested friends could be so discrete. I was quite envious of them. Although personally I'm more comforable being covered anyway. Especially when my LO got older and started to look around all the time.

CitronKB, upper level, behind Costa at the Food Court (South). Opposite the Nike store. There are 4 or 5 individual feeding rooms each with a changing station and a solid door you can close for privacy. Or you can feed outside in the general area. There is a little play area to keep your other little one busy (if you have another one). There are wipes, warm water, basins and even a microwave! A large and very nice area for mothers.

CitronKB, They were in every bathroom I went into, not just the food court ones. Some are slightly larger than the others but all still possible to bring the pram or stroller in. If it wasn't so far for me to get there I would shop there rather than DM due to the nursing rooms. Hope you find them ok. thanks

I have seen a number of ladies feeding in public here, with covers of course. I have done this also but bubs is rather distractible right now so I feed in nursing rooms only. I like only the MOE nursing room in the new section (next to Mashreq bank) as it has a private loo and change room and chair all behind a locked door and also Dubai Mall nursing rooms are ok but a bit warm at times. [color=#FF00FF'>Mirdif city Centre has great nursing rooms also and they are nice and cool.[/color'> No sweaty baby issues there yet. I have fed bubs at cafes before just like all other posts say, in a corner or in a booth or facing a wall. No complaints. Sparkly pls where exactly in MCC? Im heading there tmrw and would like know so I can pop in there to bfeed my baby. thanks I do see bfeeding mothers all the time in public (with cover ofcourse), I do too! I suppose u never look out for it but once you are breastfeeding mother yourself you notice:) Hi. The breastfeeding rooms are in the two bathrooms that are in the two different food courts.

I've breastfed in cafes and restaurants here for 15 months and never had so much as a strange look. I use a cover but have seen a woman in niqab who just had her breast out with no cover and noone seemed shocked by it. I think it kind of fits in with the region's general pro family approach. whilst i understand that why are B@@bs black pen marked out in practically every publication?

In all my years here i have never seen anyone nurse in public Are there not mother/baby rooms in the malls etc for this? maybe you haven't [i'>[/i'>noticed[i'>[/i'> a woman nursing her baby in public but believe me it's happening everywhere, as for mother/baby rooms, it's no fun to sit in them for 30-40 mins which is how long it can take in the early days, there is no need to hide away, it's perfectly acceptable to nurse in public and you do not need to cover yourself in a blanket. I've never used a cover in 19 months It wouldnt bother me one bit and being from the UK i am used to it however in all my years here i have never seen anyone or know of any of my friends who have done it. We all stand corrected :-)

oh and for the op.... there's a la leche league here too, they have a Facebook page and have meetings at the organic cafe in Dubai mall. ilovewine... I just get on with it! I always imagined that it would be more fiddling about to use one so I never entertained the idea, when dd was smaller I undid the bra cup before positioning her and generally wore loose tops that I could lift up without much fuss and popped her on, now I do it without thinking about it and just carry on with my conversation/coffee! maybe practice in front of a mirror and see yourself and how much tummy you're showing etc a friend took a photo of me feeding once in public and it just looked like she was asleep in my lap

(no amount of youtube watching has made it 'easier' iykwim) thanks!

I breastfed both of mine in coffee shops etc... without using covers etc which seem to me to make it more obvious what you are doing, not less. Never even had a funny look let alone a complaint - and really wouldn't have fancied hiding away in a nursing room.

I would imagine that it is a big no no to nursing in public with a culture so strong in respect and modesty. In more liberal countries it would not be a problem but I really don't think it is a good idea at all over here. with respect you haven't got a clue With respect, I was offering an opinion and stand corrected. I have not seen it done over here so therefore people are obviously doing it very discreetly. Am used to seeing it being done abroad so therefore thought (wrongly) that it wasn't done.

I bfed DD in public, using my bfeeding blanket of course. This was when DD was 1yo. I would NEVER feed her in the rest rooms. Firstly, it's dirty and smelly and also it's so claustrophobic! Not only here, but back home too . I just ensured that I have her under the bfeeding blanket. My GF who is still bfeeding her 2yo, carries her bfeeding blanket too and yes, she feeds her DD while we're having lunch just the other day in Dubai Mall. :)

It's okay to feed in public here! I'm sure others will post more details but there has been official statements even I believe saying as long as you are covered you can feed your baby. I have fed my kiddo in many a cafe (and in the baby rooms). I do use a scarf to cover up, but no one has even looked at us funny here. I believe in the Qur'an it says that mothers should breastfeed if they are able for two years, so it's definitely a part of the culture here! Good luck with the move!

I tend to breastfeed wherever I am and I am fully covered. It is really not a big deal. I breastfed the other day at Burger King while eating a burger. I breastfed yesterday whilst eating at Carluccio's. I chose a table in the corner on purpose and I sat facing the wall. Nobody ever even knew. Just be discreet.

there are feeding rooms in every mall here. so far i have not seen any mother feeding in public. although i have to feed my baby once in changing room of a store :). feeding rooms in some malls are really pathetic! festival city has a sofa in the one side of washroom. you sit facing washroom and there is no AC.though for changing baby they have a separate room . my baby after taking little feed went all red and started crying inconsolably due to heat. i have to take him to toy's r us there and will never go to festival city again as long as he does not start solids!
