We had DS at City last year and have just had our lovely little girl here on Monday. They've changed a few things in between our two experiences so I thought I'd note them down for anyone else who might be interested.

The fifth floor is now for antenatal care, labour and delivery and NICU. It's nice and quiet down there now and doesn't have that rushed-off-their-feet atmosphere it had before. They also have a dedicated C-section theatre which is calm, bright and relaxed so you don't get that panicky OR feeling.

On the downside of the fifth floor, quite a few times I pressed the buzzer for access and had to stand around outside and wait as nobody answered and there's never anybody on reception. And they seriously need to get a grip of getting out of there - I've had to walk all the way to the nurses' station pretty much every time I've been down to NICU and that's not fun after a C-section.

The sixth floor is for post-natal care and it's lovely :). All the nursing staff have been absolutely wonderful and can't do enough to help (same on the fifth, but I've been up here longer so I guess I've noticed it more).

Breastfeeding advice is now much, much better than before (last time all the nurses gave different advice and one even told me if a latch was painful it was a good one). They have a lactation consultant now and all the nurses and midwives seem to be singing from the same hymn sheet, and they're all really pro-BF. I'm not sure what they're like if you don't want to, but they've all been super supportive with me and all been really keen to make sure it's going OK. Having said that, I've asked to see the LC twice now and am yet to get a visit... :D. We'll see what today brings.

Now I've started this thread I've forgotten what else has changed! Any questions?!

Wow, that doesn't sound too good :(. Dr Elsa delivered DD and I saw her countless times in between delivery and discharge, even though I spent a fair amount of time downstairs in NICU. She was even in on Friday morning to make sure I knew what to do with the wound and what I could and couldn't do in between leaving the hospital and seeing her again. One of the nurses I saw was a bit grumpy, but I'm not sure of her name. Probably the same one because all the rest were cheery! One was just amazing and came and chatted with me in the night when DD was in NICU and I was beside myself with worry, and yet another - Zipporah - was just a Godsend the last night I was there. She really did what I would consider to be 'nursing care' that night and probably saved me a lot of tears (DD wouldn't settle, I was in pain, generally feeling rubbish). DD wasn't prescribed PediaVit but that was fine with me, as I never gave it to DS when he was tiny either. Nobody even mentioned it this time - maybe their advice has changed? I hope you're recovering well now even though your experience wasn't so good :(. I'm planning to email them to let them know what was good and what was not so good about our stay - maybe that might be an idea for you too? I had a bad experience with DS at their ER and emailed them the next day to complain, and the ER manager was on the phone within 24 hours. So I'm hoping this means they are actually interested in feedback and act on it.

DubaiCat - I delivered my DD there on Tuesday ! - and i actually logged on to note the changes i experienced between this delivery and my DS in 2010. BTW - congratulations ! My experience was a bit diff - delivered via C-section on advice of my Dr - Dr Azizunisa - we had the C-section on tuesday at 9:35am - while doing the C they found endometreosis - which she treated somehow - so i didnt have any skin to skin till around 11am. I only saw my Dr post-op at night on wed ... some 30 or so hours later - haven't seen here since - now at home - discharged - with no instructions on how to take care of the c-section wound . i called the hospital and they said - if your dr didnt say anything then just keep it clean and dry .... (the dr who delivered my DS - Dr ebrahim saw us - i think twice a day until we were discharged - and when leaving i was given ointment and dressings to change and instruction on how to do it) Also my DS was given pediavit to take daily - but nothing for DD 90% of the nurses was pro breastfeeding - except one - who at 3 am the night after delivering DD told me i should give her formula because she is not latching on my right breast (only my left one) - she even did a bloodglucose screen which ended proving that DD was just fine The LC consultant Sameera - saw us the next day and told us DD is fine and in the first 24 hours babies tend to be sleepy - She came back the next day and made sure that we had a good supply and latch and showed me an alternative to the "football" hold that just never worked both now with DD or with DS I still follow her advice - it was really good! at all costs avoid a nurse called christine - she would put the lights on even at 1am and move the baby bassinet closer to the door (if anyone opend the door the bassinet would be in the way) and when i asked her to please stop moving things around and put it back - she would grunt - i had the same reaction when i asked her to help me change my dressings

I could definitely tell the difference between the first couple of days I was there and the last. But don't worry - even if they were rushed off their feet the care was still excellent.

Just one more thing while I remember. The day after my section the lactation consultant, Samira, popped in to see me for a quick chat. At the time my milk hadn't come in, DD was in NICU and I was feeding two-hourly before she was given formula (on the paediatrician's advice as she was hypoglycaemic), and I was still all over the place so I wasn't really registering that it was painful. I asked to see her, preferably when I was in NICU feeding DD, three times after this and it didn't happen. One of the midwives I asked came back and told me she'd tried to get hold of her but that she was really busy, so I should ask the NICU staff to get hold of her, but DD was discharged from NICU later that day so we didn't get the chance. So I never got to see her before we left. As I said I felt their whole approach to breastfeeding was much better, but if you do need to speak to the LC it looks like you need to be a bit more persistent than I was. PS It was really busy when I was there (I totally forgot about 1/11/11!) so maybe that was why.

I believe Sister Martie is still head of the ward, but in all the time I've spent here I've never actually met her! I've heard she's great, though. Sadly Mum ended up leaving Sunday morning and we had DD Monday morning :(. We still didn't know what was happening and didn't want to change her flight at 1,200dhs if I wasn't going to be having the C section until much later, so we thought it best if she went home. Of course then it was decided that we'd deliver - s0d's law!

Congratulations DC!!! Thanks for this thread, I had ds at city 1.5 yrs ago and will be heading back in June :-) I had a great experience and was hoping it was still good. One question, is Sister Martie still head of the delivery ward? She was wonderful when I had ds.

hi lovely, a friend of mine wants to know if the rumours of doulas no longer being allowed at City is true? Do you know if this is definitely the case? x Sadly this is true. However, I have it on good authority that if you want a [i'>friend[/i'> in the delivery room with you, why not?! :D
