Hi ladies, not really sure where to start...

DD is just shy of 11 months old. Is on 3 bottles a day and drinks roughly between 120 - 180ml per feed. She is now exclusively on formula after weaning herself completely off the breast (much to my dismay and heartache).

2 week-ends ago on a Friday, i went out and DH was left alone home with her to do the dinner time and bath routine. This was the first time i was out of the house and the first time he did the whole routine on his own. All went well, but the trouble started when he put her down after her bottle. She winged, fussed and then it eventually went into a full blown tantrum by 45min. She then threw up all over her herself in the cot :(

On the Saturday, DH did the morning and afternoon bottle, she drank well and went down with ease. Came bedtime - she did the same - threw up all over herself in her cot! The same thing happened over the past week-end! Was fine the whole week with me, was fine for the morning and afternoon feeds with DH - but messed on herself when he put her down at night!

DH left on Sunday on a business trip. DD has been fine, however started throwing up last night after her bottle and this evening whilst i was giving her the bottle :\:

Needless to say - this is all very distressing and i cant seem to make heads or tails as to why this is happening?! And not to mention the mess i have to clean up, change her, air the room for a bit and then settle her.

Could it be behavioral? Habit which is forming? Tummy too full at night? Attention seeking? Should i think about taking her to a Dr?

There does not seem to be a distinct pattern, so i am really stumped now :(

Has anybody experience something similar? Or point me in the right direction so that i can do some reading? I'm not really sure what to plug into google, so my search results are futile!

TIA

Hi Plumie, It's amazing how many doctors you have to see to get answers, and I hope your little one is on the road to recovery. My 20 month old has been projectile vomiting for 3 day now, and is never usually sick. It all began when he chewed on a leaf from our garden the other night, and threw up within minutes. He has then followed that with many more episodes, especially after milk. We, of course went to the emergency dept, and had very little help from them, then saw another doc who prescribed elecrolites, motilium, zyrtec, and said it as rotavirus...which it clearly is not, and he has had no fever, has healthy stools etc. After much searching, we have found the plant to be non-toxic, and in fact, harmless. We still have no idea as to the cause of his vomiting. I myself did suffer from something many years ago, which left me with a high white blood cell count, and a feeling of exhaustion, and this happened after food poisoning, most likely from unwashed food on holiday in Turkey. Back then, the doctors first thought it was Legionaire's disease. All this has prompted me to check the toxicity of other plants outside, many of which are deadly poisonous, such as desert rose, oleander etc, but would love some answers for my poor little son suffering his 'Exorcist' episodes!

Hi ladies, We re finally starting to get some answers now!!! After countless attempts, i finally managed to get a urine sample from little Madame! Urine analysis confirms infection! Dr was not happy with her leukocyte/white blood cell count as it was very high! Unfortunately i did not get enough urine for culture testing, so had to rinse and repeat the process several times until i managed to get 10ml. DH just drove that through to the clinic, so hopefully by morning we can have the results! He will probably start a course of anti-biotics tomorrow based on the finding of the second urine test! Dr did mention that the throwing up, high temp, restless and wakeful nights could all well be related to the infection! So after seeing 3 Dr, her Dr was the one who finally is getting to the bottom of it :) Lesson learnt - Trust your motherly instinct, it never fails you!

a food/milk intolerance and/or reflux would correlate with increased susceptibility to ear infection etc though. I guess the big question is, is she vomiting because she is getting worked up about bedtime (an emotional issue) or is she vomiting first (a medical issue) and then getting upset about the vomiting? As far as fussy eating, it seems to be common around the 11/12 month mark, happened to me and many other posters on this forum. Lasted a few weeks for us although he still has more of an "opinion"than he did in his first year. :)

The frequent fever part doesn't fit with the idea of a milk intolerance, I think you should get some bloods done for that. Also how are you taking her temperature, if its the ear thermometer is it that she is screaming and getting worked up and hot, leading to a false reading? As far as the vomiting, if she does have a milk protein allergy then you could try a switch to a soy based formula and cut out cheese, yoghurt etc as well. You need to maintain this for at least 3 weeks to see a clear difference. I wouldn't beat yourself up too much about the getting sick more often/breastfeeding connection. DS never had a fever or a cold in his first year but the last 2 months he has had 3 colds and a tummy bug, despite still being breastfed. The maternal antibodies stop protecting them so much at this age regardless of whether you are breastfeeding or not and you'll find that some of the kids he plays with are probably in nursery etc, so they will be bringing in a lot more germs etc, its fairly unavoidable.

1st of all sorry to hear all the bad news with your Daughter. Perhaps it is something as simple as her being really badly affected by teething? There are millions of bottle fed babies in the world and I've never heard of a child having a high temp just because you opted to start bottle feeding. Stop stressing out think rationally. Take her to a doctor for her high temp Welcare have a ped on call 24 hrs a day.

I am so, so guilt ridden! Gave in to the pressures of getting my DD on the bottle and supplementing with formula and ever since then, things have just not been the same with her :( Whoever pressured you into this needs a smack across the head! Hope you get to the bottom of this and have her feeling well again! x Books, Internet, people..."get your baby on a bottle then your husband can help with feeding", "get your baby on the bottle then you will have more freedom"...honestly - I don't even know if everything is related?! But with Y being a "sick free" baby up until a few weeks ago, it just seems like the dots join up?! But will leave the final verdict up until all tests have been done!

Thank you ladies! Another bad night - screaming blue murder from 10pm - 12am and then 5am - 6am :( Just sits in her cot screaming :( Temp was at 37.8 when I went in at 10pm, gave her some Calpol and it came down by the time she settled at 12am! All very strange behavior for her :\: I placed a urine bag in her diaper this morning in the hope that I can collect some urine and take it to the Dr! If this comes up clear, then I will insist on blood work! I know my baby and instinct tells me that something is bothering her! I have the details of a nutropath @ Well Being Clinic, so it may also be an option to take her there for some allergy testing. I am so, so guilt ridden! Gave in to the pressures of getting my DD on the bottle and supplementing with formula and ever since then, things have just not been the same with her :(

plumie ... sounds very much like DS when he is not well. He had ear infection and heavy cold / cough with 39 temp. He would throw up at nights (mostly). I would suggest observing DD (chk if fever returns or if DD is pulling her ears) and take her to the doc again if she doesnt feel better soon. Insist on a blood work and a stool test if required (to check for tummy infection, which is common once they start crawling)

Sorry to hear that things are not better with your DD. It does sound as if the lactose is upsetting her system (especially if she only started having these problems since she's been on the formula). To be honest, she sounds like me. I found that my body could cope with dairy products early in the morning but by the afternoon (and definitely in the evening) I was in absolute agony with bad cramps, gas and nausea. My stomach was so bloated at times, that I often looked like I was 4 months pregnant (which I certainly was not!!). I also had constant sinusitis with ear problems which cleared when I went on a lactose free diet (I can cope with little amounts now). I also didn't sleep well at night. My main issue was with milk. So maybe try changing her formula and see if that helps. With my DD (5 months), she started to be 'uncomfortable' so we went through quite a few formulas to find one that suited her. I hope that she doesn't follow me with my food issues, as I am celiac! I agree with the others about keeping a food diary. Hope she is feeling better soon (and you as well) and you can figure out why things are happening. Please don't feel quilty - she had a very good 11 months of breastfeeding!

Hi Plumie - sorry don't have any advice - as you know I'm a new mom myself and am baffled every day by something new myself - but just wanted to say I'm sorry to hear DD is having a rough time and hope you get to the bottom of it real soon. Don't feel guilty though - you are doing the best that you can and you did extremely well bf for 11 months!!! Hugs xx

Hi ladies, Need to pull up this thread again as things are still not better :( Last night at 1am, DD broke out into a fever of 39 degrees! We called out Dial-a-Doctor and by 2am a Dr was here. He assessed DD and diagnosed her with ear infection. He also prescribed her - Physiological serum, Motilium and Cefodox (anti-biotic). Today i took her to see Dr Khan @ Coopers, and no ear infection picked up and her fever had come down to 36.6 (i had dosed her with Nurofen throughout the day). We left his clinic with a "clean bill of health". Along with this, DD started throwing up again on Monday night after her 7pm bottle, yesterday after her afternoon snack and tonight with her 7pm bottle! I am just so utterly confused as 2 Dr's gave us 2 very different diagnosis and i KNOW something is bothering her as she has not been her usual self the last couple of days/week! Her sleeping is **** and i cant remember when last we had a night were she slept through without waking up screaming in the middle of the night :( I also moved her onto bland, stage 1 puree food and she seems to be eating all her meals and fruit again! She went on a eating strike last week and went for days without eating a complete meal... I am filled with utter guilt for weaning her from the breast as things just went completely pear shaped when i moved her onto formula! She was never ever sick in her 11 months, never ever had a fever when she was breastfed and just generally seemed to have a healthier appetite! What else can i do or consider? Any advice much appreciated x

Plumie, when my DD was around a year old she used to throw up everytime after her lunch (solid meal). I asked a wonderful health visitor she had (back in the UK) and after she asked a few questions she said that as I was leaving DD in her high chair after her meal, even though it was only for a few minutes while I washed up and she was in the kitchen with me, to take her out of her highchair straight after her meal. Basicly little Miss wanted attention and that is how she got it, so changing her routine put a stop to her habbit. Well my 3rd baby also did the same thing, he started younger and everytime he was put into his playpen or if we were outside and he wanted to get out of pushchair!!!! It wasn't fun for a few months, the playpen we changed to a bigger one which he loved. Outside I learned how to change his clothes with the least amount of fuss or attention and he stopped doing it. I think it's best to look out for any allergies, but in the meantime I suggest you don't make a fuss when it happens and have her change of clothes and bedsheets ready so if she needs changing you can do it quickly and put her back to bed. Babies are so clever and maybe she knows it's bedtime and wants to stay up a bit longer :) Sorry for the long post and Good Luck

does she take a bottle before nap??? sorry dont remember if you said already or not.... the other person had a good point about tracking the other foods she is eating. even if its not the exact same thing it could have the same ingredients, it could be an allergy. or it could just be that laying down after the bottle is bothering her, formula is pretty think you could give it 20 - 30 min before putting her down and maybe give her a few sips of water to make sure its all washed down good... if it keeps up though i would probably take her to the doc. could be something more serious going on in her little tummy. good luck.

Well the same thing happened to my LO as soon as she drinks milk in night start coughing n then vomit, took her to the Dr n started antibiotic as he said she is coughing due to some allergy n medicine didn't work and for six months we been facing the same problem but with the cough n that too only in night. I finally took her to the ENT specialist n he told me give her a milk one hour before her bed time like think about yourself how can u drink milk while lying down n going to sleep with bottle. As she couldn't take the milk down that's why she is coughing n vomiting and not only this she had ear infection too because of night feeding n constant cough.

She has a different meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday! I almost never give her the same meal for consecutive days...so one night for dinner she will have pasta with meat/fish/chicken, next night rice meat/fish/chicken, spelt with meat/rice/chicken etc... However, that is a good tip and i think from tomorrow i will start logging her meals, as, if it persists then i will have to take her to the Dr :(

plumie - have you tried keeping a food diary to see if it's what she's having for lunch or dinner? the exact same thing happened to DS (now 13 months) recently and it also only happened with the formula feed right before bedtime. I couldn't figure it out until I started tracking what he was having for lunch and dinner (down to individual ingredient). After a few weeks I thought it might have been difficulty digesting lentils and beans - it was causing a lot of wind and trapped gas. I cut those out and it hasn't happened again. Might be worth trying?

sounds like the formula isnt sitting well with her a bed time for some reason... have you tried waiting like 30 min. to put her down after the last feed?? I could give it a try, will throw her routine completely off, but would be better than cleaning up the mess! Why would it not happen every night then? Or only at night?
