Fullymine, did your LO have strep and if so are you and hubby being treated with antibiotics? Strep is nothing to mess with as it can potentially cause severe complications if not properly treated. You might want to consider probiotics to help your son's tummy...antibiotics kill the bad germs, but also good germs so probiotics can help balance things out. *Hugs* I hope you're all feeling better very soon. xx Hi Ladies, thanks for the msg Jules... i still have a bad sore throat, and so does my hubby.. our little one started getting better, no fever, but yesterday and today he has diarrhea... his nappy is leaking every few hours.. is it because of the Augmentin antibiotics??? !!! oh i dont know what to do!! what is happening to my son! his fever is back at 38.2 so i just gave him calpol,.. just when i thought he was getting better!! :(

Glad to hear your LO is getting better. It is very possible that the diarrhea is due to the Augmentin. My LO was the same when he was on it. As soon as he finished the antibiotics the diarrhea stopped

FullyMine, I hope your DS and you are feeling much better. Poor you, not a great start to nursery life, the first time they get really sick is the worst, but you will learn to read the signs and the symptoms as time goes on, so you can deal with it quickly. Does Dr Rita have a mobile? We see Dr Khan at Cooper Health Clinic, he is always contactable on his mobile which is such a help, as invariably these things come up on a Friday night!! Good luck, and hope you are fighting fit again

You might want to invest in a rectal thermometer, they are more accurate than the ear thermometers for infants.

You SHOULD care. Strep throat and conjuntivitis are both VERY contagious. Is it possible to get someone to keep an eye on him while you go see a doctor yourself? You cannot help your child if you are sick yourself. Go see a doctor and get some rest.

My son also had Pneumonia, at age 2. Had to be in the hospital for a week. Took 4 days for the temp to come down but in other times that he had milder pneumonia (he had it 4 times), it took 2 to 3 days for the antibiotics to kick in. I am not familiar with drug names here but he was also on Augmentin and Ibuprofen for fever control (he cannot take Tylenol). Augmentin has also been used for my daughter with the same outcome - 2-3 days average for the temp to come down and them start to feel better. This is what I learned from doctor visits, nurses and from personal experience, hope it helps you: Try a damp towel on his forehead and replace it as it gets warm. Keep him very lightly dressed. Check for fever every hour. if you get diff temp from both ears, consider the highest. Keep him hydrated as much as possible, clear fluids are better, water is the best, this is crucial at this point! Small portions of food throughout the day, maybe chicken broth cooked with rice or small noodles for a day or two, not too hot, it must hurt to eat so a warm broth will help him heal and the salt in the soup will help with the infection. Do not insist if he doesn't want to eat but keep trying a bit later. Offer the foods he likes. You will be tired - ask for help from friends and family if you can. Stay in control and rest as much as possible. Let him sleep as much as he wants to, but keep monitoring his temp. Also,[u'> too much[/u'> sleep could be a sign something is not right, so control how many hours he is sleeping, and if something doesn't look right, call the doctor. You can, and should, put him in the shower/tub as many times as you think are necessary to keep his temp near 37C. Water his head every time, heat is lost through the head. Hoping the next 3-4 days goes by quickly for you and your little one feels tip-top!!! Good luck, stay positive, and keep us posted.

At last you have some answers!! If he has only just started the augmentin it will take some time to kick in and the fever will still run high until then. Just keep monitoring it giving calpol and sappositary when required. If there is no improvement in a few days then go back to his Dr. My son was taking augmentin a few weeks ago for pneumonia. He was started on something stronger whilst in hospital(can't remember the name) and it took 5 days for his temp to come under control, it was between 38.2 and 39.9 the whole time. 38.2 being with calpol and sappositary. Of course keep an eye on things but the anitbods will take time to kick in. Hope they kick in fast though. I know how tough it can be dealing with a sick little one so remember to look afte yourself too.

dear fretty, our dr is in al bedaa clinic (that is behind shangrila hotel) and his name is dr. faris he is a GP yet i go to him for everything anyone of us has (u know these things r more like psychological comfort... my 6months boy had a yellowish eye discharge as well for more than 10days, just gave him some eye drops and used to wipe the eyes with some warm tea pads and they got well now and it is perfect... praying for ur baby and for all sick babies, i guess u need to give him the calpol every 4 hours even if there is no fever (as a preventive) for somedays... anyway, i am not a dr and better to check with his dr, i am just telling out of the mother's sense... good luck

Antibiotics are given to treat bacterial infections, not viral infections. I assume the dr wanted to wait 24 hours to see if any symptoms of a viral infection would show up (which might be the eye discharge, see: Nasopharyngitis) and if not, to give him the antibiotics to treat the fever as a bacterial infection... I think. omg i think he does have Nasopharyngitis.. i just read the symptoms and he ticked all boxes!!! yiiikes! screw the antibiotics then.. do i jst keep giving him calpol every 4 hrs and baths? il see what his dr says tomorrow..

Hi Bianca, yes that is correct, the antibiotics are to be used tomorrow if his fever is still high and that means he has bacterial infection rather than a viral!! i dont want to start him on antibiotics untill i see his dr tomorrow. my heart is aching for him :(

Have you started the antibiotics? I don't know what to tell you seeing as the hospital won't help but I wouldn't be happy with what they said. I would want to know what was wrong with my son before starting any meds as augmentin can be used for so many things and without doing any kind of test how can they say it is viral?!?! Sending loads of hugs your way. Not that they will help at the moment Thanks Lynney, very sweet of you.. i just gave him calpol and put him to sleep.. il monitor his temp and if it shoots up i am going to the hospital... tomorrow morning i am taking him to healthbay poly clinic to see his dr Rita.

first of all, in the hospital they wont do more than a shower and a suppository... my baby had it once and he cried the **** of his lungs there... since then, i learnt to do it myself at home, put him in the shower with some toys and let him play with the cups and water for 10 mins, then put him in his pj... i give him the calpol or sappository (depends on his temp) and monitor him... never give medicine again in less than 4 hours... our GP is so anti-medication and he doesnt like any antibiotic for kids under 2 unless highly needed.... i hope ur baby gets well soon and u wont need to do any.. it is too bad to see ur baby sick with no energy, not in mood for anything :-( bring tears to my eyes... Sorry to change the subject... Ziiii, can you please tell me who is your doc? I can't seem to find one who is not "trigger" happy with antibiotics. knowing how unnecessary they are most of the time I would feel much happier to have a doc. with the same oppinion.

THank you so much ladies, i just got back from Medcare Hospital (we didnt have time to google any other ones and we knew the direction to this one). the Dr prescribed a bunch of medication and gave him a nurofen suppository. she said it is most probably viral, so we need to keep an eye on his temperature every 4 hours and to give him calpol if it rises above 38 and the suppository if his temperature is above 39. if by tomorrow night his temprature is still high then i have to start him on antibiotics (augmentin). i will also give hima bath tomorrow to keep the temp down.. so sad :(

fullymine, calm down. It's ok. First give him a bath and monitor him. If you feel more confortable, you can call a doctor that will come to your place. Remember that an hospital is also a place where a lot of sick people are...be sure you it's worth to expose your baby to that. Do you have a pediatric doctor for your baby ? Can't you call him/her ? It will be best I would second this too - give him a bath, fill your tub with tepid water (water temp not higher than 37C) and let him sit on it and play for about 15 mins - use a cup and make his head and whole body wet, pouring water over his head as many times as you can - most of the heat gets lost from the top of our heads. Do not let him get cold after that, dry him thoroughly, check his temp again and take him to the hospital if you think he needs to be seen. Keep him hydrated, clear liquids are best, preferably water. I wish Dubai had a Nurse Line. Do you need a map? I can google it for you, let me know which hospital you are looking for and I'll send you a map. Good luck and keep us posted. edited by MomOfTwins on 29/07/2011

And I would recommand Rashid Hospital also. They have a great pediatric emergency there, with the lastest engines (if you can call that so) up to date. Very comprehensive and nice doctors and nurses too.
