My LO - 15 months was a bit unwell recently - viral infection - then 6 weeks later - runny nose and cough - but dr told us to just give his saline solution for nose - cough syrup and let him fight it

Now 2 weeks later - yesterday - after a playdate - he had diarrhea - Its just one thing after the next!!!

I normally change his diapers asap - his facial expressions usually let you know what he is doing - or you get the smell!!!!
Yesterday - he does his business starts crying - when i open the diaper to change i noticed a red bum - so i apply mustela nappy rash cream (Ive had it for a while - never needed it before- and thought its ok to use cos theres no expiry date on the tube)
But each time i try to wipe his bottom or wash it - he starts crying like he is in serious pain!
(i usually use wet wipes but with some fresh warm water, or just take him to the bathroom and wash up then use a towel to dap dry)

This morning the redness seemed to ahve gone but now its back - not just red but red and swollen
each time i change the diaper he cries!!!!!!!
Now after the last diaper change he cried and cried and now asleep on my chest!
What am i doing wrong ????
I started using pampers a week ago - but they really not good - feel they not as absorbent as huggies
Could this be it - or maybe he has a bug or some sort ???
Yesterday he was biting everything and i can feel new teeth just under the surface
I wanna run back to the dr and make sure everything is ok with my bub - even tho i know i will get the - your a first time parent look !
but no car till DH gets back this evening
Anybody else deal with nappy rash
What do i do ?
Sorry for long post - but i just dont know what to do
nappy cream, back to huggies or just run back to dr?

SA_Babe , Hope your LO is better now, My baby had the same reaction when she was in pampers... We used Sanita bambi and huggies both do really good. Pampers are full of chemicals and some babies are sensitive to it while others are not. Myabe yours didnt take kindly to his new diaper. tc

DS always gets a nappy rash for a couple of days when I change the brand of nappies we use. I generally use pampers sensitive (they are the only ones that held the poo explosions without leakage) and sometimes I go to huggies but each time i've changed to any brand he gets a red bottom and pimple like spots around his tummy. I have tried 4 different nappy rash creams and found the sudocream to work the best for us. I hope it clears up for your LO soon :(

I tried a few things for different things worked for my kids Try Zincast - this is a bum cream with zinc which heals the skin.. This was one of the last things that worked on my baby. You can get it in any pharmacy but I saw it in C4 and Geant as well. You can also try canesten cream. It works well but I will normally put an oily bum ointment like bepanthan over it to protect it from the wetness. Another thing i tried and really worked: Whipp egg white till it is white and fluffy. Put that on the bum or red areas and get baby to lie in sun to dry. You can really see the difference . Good luck!

I found sudocrem to burn on already sore skin - but that was just me. I'd get him out of Pampers - horrid, chemical filled things. I found my two much damper with Pampers (I use Sanita bambi) Anyhow, aside from keeping him dry and bottom in the fresh air (not good with the runs tho! lol!), also try to make his diet a bit bland for a bit - no oranges, lemons, tomatoes (acidic stuff) and the same for you if you're breastfeeding. I have a friend whose son had horrid, blistering nappy rash and she realised she was eating tomatoes every day, so she cut them out and the rash cleared - one of my mum's friends had the same with oranges. No scientific proof, but hey - anything's worth a try.

I have found Bepanthen cream to be very good for nappy rash. Spinneys sell it. Good luck. Hope the rash clears up soon.

Hi SA Babe - I feel for you. We had the same issue when my DS was 1. It actually led to welts in his skin. It may be from a different problem though - after the excessive bout of diarrhea, it really hurt him to push - so he kept it in - the longer he kept it in, the more the acid built up on the stool, and then this burnt his skin - absolutely heart wrenching to change a nappy. For the welts, no cream would help because of the acid - so eventually one dermo suggested a paste - kind of similar to what stomo patients use. It is a paste that attaches itself to the stool, and therefore protects the skin. We started seeing a difference within 24 hrs. It allowed the poor kids to breathe. Ask a pharmacist what they have here. If this is not the right thing for you - try good old vaseline to protect. Also, not sure if you can buy them here, check with the pharmacy, but you can get coton slips/pads to put in the nappy. It is soooooooo soft an it will stop any irritation while the skin is healing. Maybe a cold washer for a bit could help with the swelling? Try and let bubs play without nappy as much as possible so area can dry - a little mess may be well worth it. Best of luck....

Just use water to clean the area, as wet wipes may sting, just dip his bottom in Luke warm water and then lay him on his tummy and let the area air dry. I used to use sudocrem cream as soon as the area ever appeared red and this usually nips the problem in the bud. BTW nappy rash and teething are known to appear hand in hand, so there could be a link. If you are not going out I'd be inclined to place towels on your playmat and leave him without nappy lying face down for as long as possible over the next fews days, it usually helps recovery.

Is the rash all over his bottom area or just concentrated? If it's all over perhaps he's allergic to something either in the nappy, in the cream or in the wipe. I think I'd probably pop him back to the doctor just to be sure. My sister always recommends Metanium nappy rash cream. Her son had terrible, terrible diarrhoea for ages when he was tiny and it was the only thing that made any difference.
