ice cream. And that was fine as long as I was back home on holiday, but back here I don't know where best to go to get some. I don't trust any of the supermarkets to sell ice cream that has not been thawed at some point - when not pregnant I would just risk it, but now I don't dare. Similar goes for the shops and kiosks selling ice cream at the malls . Saw a roach in one of the display containers and never have bought any since. Do you ladies have a tried and trusted "dealer" for ice cream where my risk of getting food poisoning is minimal? I am desperate for some ice cream!

Was sooo hesitant to open this thread as I didn't want another craving! But.. at 33 weeks, I already have the ice cream one - very strange given I never usually eat the stuff! To be honest, I have never seen a recommendation to not eat the hard packed ice cream - yes, 'some' recommend that soft serve cones are a no-go area because of the way it is stored (but even then this is debated amongst medical specialist), but there is nothing that I have been able to find on the 'regular' ice cream. Having said that, storage here in Dubai is questionable - but, as long as the ice cream you buy is made from pasturised milk, and doesn't seem to have melted and been refrozen, I wouldn't be concerned. I just buy my Haagen Daas from Waitrose, and have never been concerned about its storage, no icicles, no refrozen 'pool tracks' in the ice cream. But (my little disclaimer) I have only brought two little tubs in the last 2 weeks, because, as I say, I am not a regular consumer of it... until recently... damn cravings, and I wonder why I am putting on so much weight?!?!?! But that is a whole other thread. edited by TanyaR on 16/01/2012

live yogurth is indeed very good for you even during pregnancy. I have about 2 yogurts a day. Laban is also really good. All a great source of protein and calcium and the live culteres help digestion to stay "regular". Thanks ladies for the replies to my question. I guess I will just have to get a pack of ice cream and let dh try it first......

I keep looking at the Rachels Organic Bio-live yogurt in the fridge with live cultures. I've tried to investigate if its safe to eat whilst pregnant. Anyone know for sure? The pot is calling me.... I've never heard any recommendations to avoid 'live' yoghurts. I can only imagine they are very good for you as they boost your natural digestive processes. ETA...I just did a super quick look at a couple of my favourite sites, and they highly recommend live yoghurts during pregnancy. :D edited by Green-ish on 16/01/2012

Why don't you try frozen yoghurt instead? It is healthier and yummy!

Just avoid the Breyers ice cream (I've always seen it with serious freezer burn and frozen melted ice cream on the outside) and beware the Blue Bell ice cream, these show evidence of having thawed out at some point then being re-frozen. Neither of which brands are sold at Spinneys. Enjoy! great cheap thrills are Classic chocolate-flavored (ie artificially flavored choc!) ice cream and KDD vanilla caramel, KDD tropical sorbet. The Bulla mint choc chip and vanilla are yummy!

One thing I've noticed in this country is that ice cream is never rock solid when you take it out of the supermarket freezer. It should be, because it will naturally thaw a little in the time it takes to get home.

You probably can't tell unless you open a tub of ice-cream. If it's thawed and refrozen it would have a different look and texture to it, like a more smooth (?) creamier look instead of the ripple look as you dig the spoon in to grab some.

I used to go for the ice cream at Spinneys, too ,witbout any problems, until, last summer I noticed one day, I guess they just had it delivered that all of the ice cream bars were warm and more or less liquid.... so, as I said, if I weren't pregnant I would go for it, but now I don't want to risk it. Is there any way to tell if ice cream has been thawed and refrozen? It does all look so good sitting there in their freezer at spinneys....

Ha ha I have o laugh because omg thats what I have for desert almost every night! I am sooooooo loving ice-cream. We just buy bulla vanilla from spinneys. I also have to have caramel topping (I am not normally a fan of caramel, find it too sweet) and a crushed twirl bar in top. I kid u not this has been my craving every night for past 8 weeks!

Well, I didn't want ice cream UNTIL I saw your post!!! Isn't the power of suggestion amazing? Ha! Seriously, I might throw my car keys in the pool to keep me from going to buy it!!! Mmmm... I am thinking mint chocolate chip (which is not my fave, but seems to be what "the baby" wants). Can't help you with the "dealer," (lol) but it honestly never occurred to me that ice cream might be suspect here--but you raise a good point. I definitely agree with you about the shops and kiosks--very shady, indeed. But, the sealed cartons at the supermarket? Do you really think it is risky? (or are you really my husband in disguise so that he is off the hook for those late-night ice cream runs?) :)

But in my last trimester I got a serious milkshake craving. So went to Baskin Robbins on Al Wasl road (safa centre where Park and Shop is) practically every alternate day for some ice cream shake and all was good. *knocks wood for when the urge strikes me again, preg or not ;)*
