I'm trying to breast feed as well but having supply issues so have started motilium, top up milk is S26 . Any of u got any ideas on what I should to reduce his noises and uneasiness , I have started him on fennel seed herbal tea as well. Do u think I should start him on antireflux milk . Js scared to change milk as at least he's nt colic now ,what if change of milk makes colic ? HELP PLEASE

Hi - mine didn't have reflux, but I just wanted to comment on something you put that no one else has picked up on... please don't give him fennel tea at such a young age - it has no nutritional quality and will just fill his tummy up with water, essentially replacing a milk feed for him, which is what he needs to grow. The others have given great advice - try getting a sling or baby bjorn so that you can strap him in and carry on with your life with him upright and comforted. agree re: the tea, you shouldn't be giving it at such a young age, not only does it fill the tummy up (meaning less milk + less nutrients for a growing body and brain) but you are also potentially introduce a source of infection, as it is not sterile.

Hi Enigma, My son had really bad reflux from newborn until he was maybe 10 months old... I breastfed him initially but had a low supply of milk and found it really hard when he was sick after every feed as I was constantly feeding him! I had a toddler at the time so it was very tricky and I decided to switch to formula. Don't feel pressurised into breast feeding, yes it is best but sometimes, it isn't as easy as it is meant to be. Healthcare professionals made me feel terrible about my decision to bottle feed but it was definately the right choice for me and my baby (and his sister!). We tried many many formulas and bottle teats but ended up switching him back to SMA goldcap and he was prescribed Infant Gaviscon which we mixed with his bottle. I can honestly say, it worked amazingly well and from the day he started using the baby gaviscon he was a changed baby and just seemed so much more comfortable. We also found that when we started weaning him at 17 weeks (recommended by the gp because of his reflux) things settled down a lot and it will get easier and easier. My son is now 19 months and all this reflux business is a distant memory! Good luck :) x

Sorry to hear things aren't going so well :(. I hope that you have managed to get trained support by now. Support group Breastfeeding Q&A had a guest speaker talk on Breastfeeding with colic and reflux at our last seminar; you might like to check into our Facebook page (Breastfeeding Q&A UAE) and post for support and info. We'd be happy to send you the slides from the presentation and put you in touch with our speaker if you like. xx

Hello there, I can relate to what you and your DS are going through. My DS (now a year old) had reflux as well and though we could relate all symptoms to GERD the doc said we wont start any medication until 6 weeks as for some infants GERD goes away at 6 weeks. DS didnt outgrow GERD and we went to Dr. Ahmed (am a huge fan of him) and DS was on Motilium. The meds just help to do away with the irritation in the oesophagus and are not a solution for GER. What helped me was that i was breastfeeding - I stopped taking any milk/ yoghurt etc / no spicy food and that seemed to help his reflux. Also I used to feed him more often - that way he took lesser quantities at shorter intervals. I used to keep him upright atleast for 30 minutes after every feed - seems like a long time but you will definitely notice DS is happier after this and sleeps better. As the earlier poster said leave him on a wedge (I got mine from premamaman in Dubai Mall). I also used a tucker sling (www.tuckersling.com) for a while and that helped him as well. If you can please stay away from forumula - its because BM is easy on the stomach and gets digested faster whereas forumla takes a while longer. Dont worry - DS outgrew it a 5 months and am sure your little one will. Good luck !

Hi Enigma. I feel for you. My son who is 11 months now had reflux as well with pretty similar symptoms to what you describe. I too went to see Dr. Ahmed. We started my son on infant gaviscon. I too started breastfeeding but I could not keep up with the demand so switched to formula. Dr. Ahmed explained that due to the burning sensation, babies tend to want to drink a lot of milk all the time as it soothes them. So it may seem like he's always hungry but its more so to soothe burning sensation. we switched to an anti-reflux formula but it was the worst mistake. I would not personally recommend it as its quite thick and it just sits in the stomach longer which makes them feel more uncomfortable. My only solution was Gaviscon and to keep my son upright a lot. Even when sleeping, try to get a wedge so he can be raised. In mycase, I ordered the wedge but it came quite late so he ended up sleeping in a bouncer for a looong time :) Good News is they do grow out of it by 6 months. So there is light at the end of the tunnel. Just have to wait it out...

Typed out a lonnnng reply and my window hung! Anyway here is the essence of it... My daughter had silent reflux which has now come to the not grunting not much writhing throwing up kind which I prefer to the hellish first few weeks (she was nearly 5 weeks when we found out - started with Gaviscon and moved on to Zantac+Motillium). It definitely needs someone to support you through. Sensible paed is what we got - Dr Sayed Rais Ahmed (he's in Kids First and City Hospital as well on Mondays and Thursdays). I would happily recommend him. GERD is hard to diagnose since to be absolutely certain you need invasive tests. Which doctors won't put babies through unless you have no option. Instead they diagnose on the basis of symptoms (i kept a log for a few days of food, nappies and all else including grunting and squealing which helped me answer a lot of the questions better). Good luck! And just to make you feel better, Dr A said in most cases its just infant reflux and goes away between 4-6 months. Thats what my lil girl has. The meds are to make her more comfortable since the acid wreaks havoc in some cases.

Thanx a lot for ur help sweet lily , great to see so many helpful ppl, will try the consultants as was js about ready to give up on breastfeeding due to the issues am facing. Oh mama. You'll get there. Don't give up. Breastfeeding can be so stinking difficult sometimes. Keep troubleshooting and seek out that support. It is so important to have a huge support network when your are nursing. Do you go to the Le Leche League meetings? There is one this Saturday (the 17th) at the Organics Cafe in the Dubai Mall. I think at 10.30. It might be great for you to go (husbands are invited too:)) and just hang out with other nursing mamas. It really is a morale booster and can really help to have that support when going through tough times like you are now. Here's their Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/groups/lll.uae/ Hope that helps. xx

Hugs to you, Enigma1979. You need support, mama! You'll need it for both the GERD and the supply issues. It isn't too late to establish a great nursing relationship and help him through his uneasiness so go ahead and contact a IBCLC asap. They are so, so helpful. I've attached a list of support options. I would also start the hunt for a GP or paed that I like and trust. Maybe someone can give you some options on who they use. I'm in Al Ain so can't be of too much help if you're in AD or Dubai. Hope this helps. x DUBAI Dru Campbell, midwife and IBCLC Joanne Francis, midwife and IBCLC (also home visits) Baby Clinic and Midwifery Clinic, Health Bay Polyclinic Tel: 04 348 7140 Paula Miller, IBCLC (clinic appts and home visits) Tel: 050 6501189 Dr Delphine Dupuis, family doctor (special interest pediatrics, lactation and women’s health) and IBCLC Sun and Wed am MediCentres, Motor City Tel: 04 360 8866 Other days Symbiosis Healthcare, Healthcare City Tel 04 3624955. My son was a constant refluxer who would spit up around 6-10 times a day until he was close to 4 months. Just to let you know this alone does not constitute GERD. Babies are naturally very wriggly noisy sleepers too, the huff, they puff they moan, they make some pretty weird noises to be honest and if you are sleeping beside them or have the monitor up high then you tend to be ultra aware of this. With only those two symptoms I wouldn't be any any hurry to give meds, they are technically only meant for babies who are in a lot of pain (crying a lot especially after feeds etc) or who are not gaining weight. We chose not to medicate, I took note of any foods in my diet that seemed to make it worse and we let him grow out of it naturally. Overfeeding causes/aggravates reflux so I wouldn't top up any more than you have to and try and feed little and often.

Well I have consulted a paed but not so happy with her as she wasn't very helpful jus said that I should try gripe water or a medicine called Bonissan. Didn't find this too helpful but if some other mums of GERD babies have some tried and tested remedy that would be more useful I guess

Oh Enigma...I'm so sorry things are so stressful for you. Apologies for being brief... Have you got a good paed who's helping you through this? Have you tried a IBC Lactation Consultant to help you with breastfeeding? Who suggested the formula top ups? Is someone supporting you though all of this? Changing formula may not help at all, best to talk to a paed with a genuine understanding of infant nutrition. It's scary how many practice and have NO CLUE about breastfeeding and nutrition. I have to run. I hope someone comes along and can be more helpful! Best wishes. xx
