Hi Ladies,

I am just wondering if anyone has had experience with NICU costs in Dubai, particularly City Hospital as we are expecting twins and I'm weighing up costs vs. going home for birth as we do not have insurance.

Thanks in advance

Hi Bex - I did a tour of the American Hospital labour ward 2 weeks ago as that is where I will have my babies. I enquired about the cost of NICU as I'm also having twins and have had complications so they will come out at 35-36 weeks and may need some special care. Apparently it costs a minimum of 4,000 AED a night for one baby in NICU. Hope that helps. Also, the midwife informed us that AHD do not accept preemie babies born under 28 weeks gestation. They send them to Latifa Hospital. A small warning about the preemies as I was studying this with my previous pregnancy. Latifa Hospital doesnt accept any babies unless mommy has registered with them for antenatal care. I registered with them to be sure and never had to use the hospital as I gave birth in American on time. But if you have twins I think better safe than sorry, register for the antenatal appointments at Latifa (I think 5000aed by now) and u can always keep your own doctor if that makes you feel more comfortable.

Hello there, I delievered twins in City last year at 35 weeks. I had ADNIC cover; which covered all the costs upto my delivery and discharge four days later. One of the babies was discharged with me; the other stayed in nicu for further three days - the costs for those three days came upto AED 17,000 (This was just normal nicu stay where the baby was monitored for temperature control). Now, ADNIC did promise me that they'll reimburse the amount but I need to pay then. I paid. However, when I tried to enrol the babies to the policy in order to claim the insurance, ADNIC demanded a premium of AED 50,000 per each baby although I produced the records showing babies were doing fine and were with me at home. There was no point enrolling them for such high premium, so ultimately I didn't. If you are planning to delivere twins here (even in Latifa), some sort of insurance is must for your own peace of mind. edited by little_zuzu on 03/04/2013

Congratulations Bex! My twins who are nearly two were born in the American Hospital. Because you have a twin pregnancy you are automatically high risk, so I really wouldn't even consider delivering here without any insurance. Mine were born at 32 weeks and spent 10 days in NICU at a cost of almost 150,000 AED. Thankfully our insurance covered most of it. There is a very active multiples group on Facebook called Twinsplus, and lots of advice from Mum's of multiples on there. All the best for a healthy pregnancy.

I would always recommend Al Wasl for their NICU. Althought it was many years ago now that we had our two sets of twins there. To this day I will always say that our children received the best ever care. Sorry, can't help with the insurance side as it wasn't the case and government health card was all you needed. But hands down I, I will always champion this hospital and known others since who have experienced all good too with their babies care.

Congrats Bex! Hope all goes well :) This may help http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=158039 Adnic do insure pregnancies at a price. I also remember Al Wasl Hospital all these years being quoted as the best and most reasonable for NNICU. Downside being that one must register before 24 weeks I think if memory serves me right.

Hi Bex, congrats on your twins! I am not sure of the exact costs but it is several thousand AED a day at City. If there is any chance you will deliver early (I am aware twins' full term is slightly less than single babies) or you foresee any complications I would strongly suggest you go home to deliver if you don't have insurance. Alternatively you can buy insurance packages while pregnant. This covers baby from their birth as well, so you just call up when they're born and they fall under your coverage. Hospitals do packages also but this doesn't include any NICU. It is very expensive tho and you could land a six figure bill if heaven forbid they spend any length of time in there. good luck. TDB can you share more about buying insurance packages whilst pregnant that cover babies from birth? thank you!

Wow thanks so much ladies, this is such a big help. I was also thinking that to get out of the summer heat here will be good for me and my 6 months old (yes I have a 6 month old too) (crikey) and this way will get help from my family and save money. :-) So far so good with the pregnancy too, fingers crossed

Congratulations on your Pregnancy, wish you a happy and healthy 9 months! I delivered in AL Garhoud Private Hospital, it was excellent, my daughter needed a six days NICU stay. Their NICU cost me 3500 a day (+medications). The hospital is new, (Opened in may 2012) and all equipment are still new and the staff we all wonderful. I didn't have cover but they offered a 20% discount for patients who paid cash. You can go and visit, it is located behind Airport Millennium Hotel.

Hi Bex Congratulations on your twin pregnancy. I am a mother of twins that were born last year at City Hospital. They were born at 32 weeks so spent some time in the NICU. I cannot give you a complete breakdown of costs as both twins needed different care but for the 2 weeks that they had care they clocked up over 100k each, eye watering if we didn't have insurance. Thankfully we had insurance for them. We use Aetna insurance as I was covered by AXA but my husband switched his as they provide you with new born cover, even if its the dad only on the policy (he did this 3 months before I gave birth) Have a look at Aetna or leave the country, if you stay and your twins are born early the last thing you want to do is worry about money when your babies need the care. Wishing you a healthy and Long pregnancy. X I have Aetna as well but they do have a 12 month waiting period for new policies, also their NICU limit is USD 100,000 only. Perhaps they have changed their policies since last year which is a shame, my husband took out his policy in April and qualified the NICU cover and our babies were born in June. It's scary to think what would have happened without the cover.

Hi City NICU costs are high, my Dd was born 26 weeks preemie and our bills were enormous. The fixed cost are about 5000 DH's per day which includes the bed charges and daily consumables. All other charges are additional on the days my daughter was critically ill the bills went upto 15k per day. If you don't have insurance you should consider going home or registering at Latifa hospital which has a level 3 NICU and the maximum cost per day would be 4k.

I am not pregnant with twins but I just got insured with Aetna and I wasnt sure about their coverage for unfortunate situations such as NICU. Hey Bex, I also think my husband informed them I was pregnant and he still got us insured. We were previously with Daman so we didnt do the 9 month waiting time like with the other insurance companies. As a matter of fact, Daman also takes on pregnant women. At least they did 3 years ago.
