I am sure I read something on here about those interlocking play mats not being sold in parts of Europe anymore as they are not non-toxic (unless it's my baby brain playing tricks on me, but I'm quite sure I read it on here somewhere!). So where can I get a nice non-toxic play mat for DD?

These mats are awesome and another option if you don't want to use the interlocking mats - www.myplaymat.ae

I read some reviews of the interlocking ones and the moms were complaining about a very strong chemical smell even days after they aired them out and that put me off buying those. Maybe I'll look at the thick rug with a blanket on top of it.. those still do get a little slippery though so am not sure that is the best option!

You mean the foam ones right, not the baby gyms, They were banned in Belgium, not sure if anywhere else has followed suit, if you are worried, put a rug over the top, I believe they were worried there was formaldehyde involved in the manufacturing process. I don' thtink there is anyway to know which are "safe", they just banned them all. I decided in the end my baby was in more danger of cracking his head open on the tiles if I didn't have them, than from the formaldehyde exposure, but I wouldn't let your child chew on them.

Are there certain ones that are banned? The reason I ask is that I saw some on sale in the Early Learning Centre before I left the UK last month and they were also on sale here. I have also been recommended to get some from Ace hardware store although I haven't made it there yet as we have no car and am not sure we could direct a taxi driver.

almost all of the ones on sale here in the UK are basically a padded quilt with sensory bits sewn into it (or not). Some of them come with either fixed or detachable arches with dangly bits for bubs to play with, but in reality, they only need something safe and comfortable - a thick blanket on the floor (maybe on top of a rug) with some toys would do the job just as well.

That's true. As far as I'm aware they are still off the Market in Europe. this happened about 7 months ago if I recall correctly. We had them all over the place with DS 1, but this tome round we've gone for rugs. If you're looking for something for outside you could try the rolls of fake grass they sell at ACE maybe?
