Twins in NICU - A very Hard Experience

I conceived twin girls via IVF and my fertility doctor told me to go to Al Wasl, as they had the best premature care...as preterm labour is a risk with twins.
I was not happy with Al Wasl during my appointments...the long waits, a different doctor every time, taking the whole day off from work etc etc...but I put up with that.

I was 28 weeks and feeling fine all day. Around 5 pm I felt a slight pain every 30 minutes and thought it was best to get it checked. We went to the ER at Al Wasl, and I was told I was 8 cm dilated. I was rushed to the delivery suite and after a C section, gave birth to my twin girls: 1.1 kg and 0.9 kg.

The girls are in the NICU at Al Wasl right now. Its been almost 5 weeks and we are worried sick and praying hard. The doctors and nurses at the hospital are amazing...and I am happy with the care the babies are receiving.
The elder one is doing well in terms of gaining weight.
The younger one is still on the vent, though its only in her nose. She also had an infection but thats been sorted out with antibiotics. She is gaining weight, but we are very worried about her not breathing on her own.

Please pray for my little angels to come home with good health and have a long life.

Does anyone have any experience with preterm babies and vents?

Hi Tania Congratulations on the birth of your twins. You are going through a very hard time right now. My good friend, Kate, who runs the twins club here also set up a facebook support group for early babies - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Early-Babies-UAE/182261955145075 - please get in touch - you will get great emotional support from people who have been through the same thing. On the twins website - www.multiplieduae.com - there are also some good links to premature babies pages to help too. There are many happy stories from the nicu in Al Wasl - I hope they bloom soon. Get intouch with early babies - or get Kate's contact details from the website. x

Sorry not to be more specific, but I did meet a lady in a park here who had given birth at 26 weeks. her daughter looked absolutely perfect. Happy, fat and healthy. I was gobsmacked at how well she had developed. I know she did spend a long time in NICU - it was a chance meeting so I know no details, only that there are many happy stories out there. Good luck.

Hi Tania, My daughter was in NICU for two months and was on a ventilator twice in that time - initially and then when they discovered she had a heart murmur. I was very upset when she had to go back on it and I am sure you are worried sick about your littlest one still being on it. Try to keep faith - one thing I do know is that the NICU facilities here are second to none. My DD was also sub one kilo (980 grams) and is now a very small but energetic 7 month old (4 months corrected). When you say vent through her nose - do you mean the full ventilator or is she on CPAP or nasal canula. If it's either of these then she has progressed and is just needing a little extra support, if it's the canula then they are at the stage of weaning her right down to breathing on her own. If she is on a ventilator then it's because they are needing to give her that support especially while she's battled off an infection - it's brilliant that she's now free of that and that she is gaining weight. They are so strong even when they look so tiny.... Have the NICU staff communicated to you about her breathing and her progression? You have every right to ask and hopefully they can put your mind at rest. It's difficult to really say what stage she is at but they wiill be able to give you the full picture. The difference between being born under a kilo means that most likely she will take a little longer than her sister. You are doing a fab job being there for them both - I know what it's like to be back in hospital each and every day and the strain that it entails. Big hugs to you xx
