how did/have you put on during pregnancy?

i know everyone is different, but i have been told i have gained too much weight...

i am 24 weeks pregnant and have gained 15kgs already... i was at my smallest when i fell pregnant and can still fit into my regular work dresses size 8-10. but scales dont lie, baby is on the big side which is good as they were worried he'd be small due to SUA.

Any advice would be great :)

thanks ladies, sorry for late reply. i have steadily gained the weight throughout the pregnancy, i didnt have any sickness in 1st trimester so ate normal, then between 12-20 weeks i didnt have much of an appetite for some reason and now its back to normal... i eat well but i also treat myself if im craving it... just going to keep an eye on things as i dont want to gain an unhealthy amount of weight... i got married in june so was on a wedding diet for months ha so i am now enjoying being able to eat normal :) i'm used to excercising but have been so exhausted to do any, am starting back up this week so hopefully that will help. thanks for all your responses xx

Try not to be too consumed by the numbers, we all carry differently, so if you know you are eating sensibly, and as long as you aren't having to manage your sugar intake because of gestational diabetes, then just try and enjoy your pregnancy! I agree with Tanya's comment. Dont focus so much on the numbers- just ensure you eat well and get some regular exercise. With baby #1, I gained 20 kilos, #2-15 kilos, #3 15 kilos and #4 only 4 1/2 kilos. With #4, I gained the 4.5 kilos before 28 weeks, and once my GTT test came back positive for gestation diabetes,I began a strict diet and exercise regime and finished the pregnancy without gaining another gram! ( I was insulin dependant)

My first obgyn here told me not to put on anymore than 12kgs. Ha ha ha ha ha I'd basically done that by 20 weeks but then things slowed down until the last 2-3 weeks (and DS arrived at 38 weeks), I put on 7.5kgs in those last couple. In the end I put on about 25kgs. I lost all but 9 of it by 4 mths after the birth but then put 5kg bk on in 4 weeks using the mini pill... Not to mention the hormone craziness! I came bk off it and then got my backside to the gym training my butt off 5 days a week plus walking everyday about 3km. That 14kg didn't move!! I fell pg this time starting 14kgs heavier, but as for this pg weight I have only put on 8kgs. I am waiting to see what the next few weeks brings as I draw nearer to due date... I'm also making sure I drink loads more water so hopefully I don't get any fluid retention. So that being said, everyone is different... Don't be too phased about it...I still laugh at the first obgyn comments, needless to say I actually changed doc through the first pg. Everything in moderation... For you AND the baby he he he! Just if you do put on, don't expect to shed it b'feeding, I was one of those unfortunates that sure as heck didn't lose anything!

Ahhh a topic close to my heart at the moment. Pregnancy No 1 I gained 30kgs (give or take a few hundred grams), I am normally quite light for my height - 57kgs - and during this pregnancy I was travelling a huge amount, I had very, very bad pregnancy sickness (all day and night) had a reasonable amount of stress in my life, and I ate gluten the entire time (I am gluten intolerant). I am afraid I had very little fluid retention - 10 days after giving birth, I had only lost 6kgs .. soo I had to work the rest off. Most of that weight was also (as some others have mentioned) gained in the 1st two trimesters. The OBGYN here never said anything, because I began my pregnancy in the UK, had scans there and NZ, before arriving here to live at 29 weeks - no-one knew how much weight I had gained overall (apart from me) and because I am quite tall, my end weight still wasn't huge. So, pregnancy No 2 (I am now 37 weeks), I was really hoping to be more disciplined, but I have still gained about 20kgs, and this time I have gained quite a bit in this last trimester (not so much in the second trimester). I had one month where I put on 4kgs, and the Doctor gave me a little caution, but because of my leg swelling was so bad, she put it down to fluid retention, and I tried to behave a little more after that. A huge number of OBGYN's here do seem to be very sensitive around weight gain, and I am just 'lucky' mine doesn't make too much of an issue of it. I do think quite a bit of my weight gain has come from eating gluten which my body doesn't process very well, and then just needing to constantly eat to reduce my throwing up. I don't deprive myself of anything I am craving, but I don't eat those things in excessive quantities either (I can easily just have a bite or two of something 'bad' to satisfy a craving rather than eating the whole thing) , and I try not to have much sugar... Try not to be too consumed by the numbers, we all carry differently, so if you know you are eating sensibly, and as long as you aren't having to manage your sugar intake because of gestational diabetes, then just try and enjoy your pregnancy!

I was 56 kg when I got pregnant and gained 17kg a lot of it was in the first 2 trimesters. My Dr wasn't remotely worried. In retrospect though I wish I had been a little more careful because although it looked like I was "all baby" while pregnant, baby came out and I still looked pregnant and it wasn't water retention at all!. Despite breastfeeding it took more than a year to lose the bulk of it and after 18 months of BF I am still a few kilos overweight. I think hormones affect us all differently though. If you are hungry you should eat, but lay off the cakes and chips and try and make it healthy calories that benefit your child.

Hi cakes I am 36 weeks and have gained 14kg so far. Didn't really gain anything the first trimester because I felt so ill and wasn't eating that much. Also seemed to keep a steady weight through second trimester, but now seem to be piling it on. I am seeing my OB every week now and seem to be gaining a kilo by each visit - yikes!! Gained a lot more in my first pregnancy - which is weird because I actually had time to swim everyday and get some excercise. 2nd time around I haven't had time to relax as much because of chasing around a 4 year old!

Don't worry about it, As you said we are all different. With my first I went from 50kgs to 75Kgs!! A lot of it was water retention as my legs and hands were so swollen. Baby was 3.8kgs This time I'm now 30 weeks and put on 10kgs. (for me it all comes on at the end, should be an interesting 2 months!) Having said that I just put on 3.5kgs in 11 days. It takes 9 months to gain the weight so don't expect it to fall off too quickly. It took me a year to get back to with a couple of Kgs. Good luck with your pregnancy. :)
