[b'>I wouldnt sleep on a 2nd hand mattress so wouldn't expect my child to. And also the SID's connection. These can be bought cheaply from mamas and papas at the outlet mall. [/b'> So you never stayed in a hotel then...;) Never lived in one. Would you buy a 2nd hand hotel mattress? No, then i wouldnt compare The tenants prior to me gave me a lot of their household goods - including their mattress. I'm not dead yet. Its really comfy actually. Better quality then I would have paid for if I purchased new.

i think it's fine to go with a second hand mattress... just look at getting it professionally cleaned... Bed Mattress Doctor currently have a LIVING SOCIAL voucher for AED 87 for the cleaning of any size mattress! :)

We had a second cot for a while and when we sold it, I had a good long think about selling the mattress with it. In the end, I decided it had only been used by one child for about six months and has always had a sheepskin underlay on it. It was never exposed to poo/wee/vomit etc. It's illegal to sell second hand mattresses in Qld (not sure about the rest of Aus) and that's what got me thinking. In the end, I included it with the cot and reminded the new owners that it is used so they could think about getting it professionally cleaned. Our original cot and mattress are now almost seven years old and I've happily let all three children sleep on the same mattress, again always with an underlay which is cleaned regularly. I think when this next baby comes along I'll ditch the old mattress and buy a new one.

My second baby only slept in her cot once, so her mattress if sold would've really been brand new.

well, I decided to buy a brand new mattress for DD's cot because it still had the original when my dad handed it over and so was about 65 years old and had seen 6 babies! Anyhow, with the toddler beds, I was far less fussed - give them a sniff, check them over and if they're in obviously good condition, then they should be fine. I always use a mattress protector on them and have one of those little steam cleaners to give them a blast every so often. Job done!

oh dear, this is all putting me off...especially the thought of poo and pee in the mattress..i know not everyone uses mattress protectors and baby diapers do leak sometimes! If a mattress has been pooed or weed on there would be a stain. Even so - if [i'>you[/i'> use a mattress protector - it protects you whether they did or did not ETA - It also puts it into perspective when you consider that every child who has had a nap at a nursery has slept on a used mattress. Probably much more used than most used mattresses for sale :) edited by SlobberKnocker on 16/01/2012

Sids and Kids investigated and concluded that rate of SIDS is not increased or decreased with new or used mattresses. They concluded that the condition of the mattress (no holes, rips), its firmness, and correct fit with the cot are the important factors. If you use a good quality mattress protector - you will not be exposed to any substance or germ that may have been on it. My main concern would be the quality of the inner springs, and bed bugs.

A while back there was believed to be a link between using second-hand / old mattresses and an increased risk of SIDS. I really have no idea how that panned out, and what recent research/current thinking is, but it might be something for you to look into.

My main concern with a used mattress would be all possible "things" it may have been exposed to. Pee, poo, vomit, milk from bottle if fed in bed, other liquids. Babies are different though. Some never eat, pee, poo, nor vomit in bed. Like like my son, his diaper leaked only twice and he never vomitted in bed. Not sure if this is average though. Guess it's a luck thing and that's why in this case I wouldn't go for used.

There are two schools of thought on this, some say that a second hand mattress is safer because a new mattress lets of toxic gas/fumes initially. Alternatively others say that a second-hand mattress is more likely to harbor mould and bacteria. If the mattress is lightly used (say one child for a brief time) and in good condition then you may get the best of both, or buy new and jump on it a lot, let it air well to let it off-gas. We did buy second hand, and put a food grade plastic cover on it.

ladies, has anyone tried doing this and do you think its a good idea? So far DH and I have bought everything brand spanking new and all that is left is a Mothercare 140 x 70 cm mattress to go with the cot-bed we bought. i have seen one for sale for second-hand and was tempted to buy it but wasn't sure whether it was a good idea..what do you think?
