We live in the Greens and love it. We have an apartment in one of the low rise, older blocks and you get alot of space for your money. Each set of blocks has a playground and swimming pool. Tecom nearby is beginning to have more and more shops opening up which makes life easier. There is a lovely mums and toddler/baby group which meets on a sunday morning - very informal but very welcoming. Metro is walkable. Generally a nice place to live especially with a young family. (We have a 3 year old and newborn).

The Lakes is nice, it's true, and really quick and easy to get to SZR (the main drag in Dubai). Greens, Lakes, JLT, Marina (and Discovery Gardens) are all the closest to Jebel Ali. Be aware that the DEWA on villas is huge in comparison to apartments - we pay all of 80AED a month for our electricity and water, plus of course the housing tax - sorry, "fee" - which brings the bill up to 450AED. Villas often cost around 1000-2000AED a month, simply because you're not piggy-backing of the building's cooling system and irrigation. If you want a garden with some greenery in it, you have to water it like crazy... just to let you know, most of the greenery in Dubai is drip-irrigated all the time.

We are also a young family, we have a 16 month old and a baby due in June, we live in a 3 bedroom villa in Alma in Arabian Ranches and really love living there. It is so family oriented and I don't find the drive to anywhere too bad at all - my husband and I work full time at the DIFC. I believe Arabian Ranches is convenient for access to Jebel Ali.

Friends of ours live in the Lakes. Their villa is lovely and was affordable. Great size garden too! You'd definitely get a nice new villa for that price ;) Happy house hunting!

I have a little more info now on where we will be. The office is in Jebel Ali, we don't have to live in that area but not too muchof a drive away so I'm guessing the Old Town and Mirdiff are going to be a little far away? Am I right in thinking The Greens is an area close to Jebel Ali? Excuse me if my Dubai geography is way off!

I would suggest picking a place near one of the metro stations. For 160 k you can just about live anywhere :) I've never used the metro, I was a little afraid of it when I was out in Dubai in Sept. Is it easy to use? edited by SherylR on 16/02/2011

You'd have the pick of some really nice places for 160k... 3 beds in the better buildings. I was actually adamant that I only wanted a villa when we first moved out, but seeing what we could afford at the time made me cry, as it was a clear step back in terms of quality of life compared to our lovely cottage in England. My advice to anyone coming out it to keep an open mind and just visit places. Spend your first day driving around, exploring the various different areas, then look at a good few places, including some wild-cards. Agents won't hold a property until May - they want to rent them out within a couple of weeks, so this expedition will really be about honing down your search, rather than picking the exact property... unless you want to start paying rent now! Thank you for the info. I will def add apartments to my search now. My OH is moving out in April without us to get set up so I guess this time we will chose an area and style we like and then he will secure one once he is out there.

We live in Old town, love it. Walking distance to the mall, metro, grassed area and parks. Nice walking areas and shops all very central. We enjoy it and we are also in our late 20's and have a 2.5yr old and a 2month old. Are you going to drive or prefer not too? Great location if your not keen on driving. Everything within walking distance.

I'm in the Marina and have a 3.5yr old and a 19 month old... and it's great. OK, it's apartments, but everything is now walkable, there are playgrounds, nurseries, indoor soft-play areas, dancing lessons, shops, restaurants, chemists, buses and the metro... everything. I've been here 2.5 years and haven't found the need for a car for my day-to-day stuff. There are also some of the most active mother and baby groups here. Some buildings have their own playrooms and children's pools - it depends what you're after. Alternatively, the Greens is very family-friendly - again, apartments. I would usually plump for a garden (have one in the UK), but here there facilities more than make up for the loss! That does sound great as the thought of driving out there really scares me! And not having to get a second car would certainly be better money wise. I've not thought about an apartment at all but I guess if the facilities around are so good then it would be an option for me. We have a budget of 160k max, what would we expect to get for this?

If you want a Villa you could try having a look at Springs, Meadows, Lakes, Arabian Ranches or Green Community. For an apartment Jemeriah Beach Residence, Marina area. How old is your DD? Have a look a Motorcity, its slightly out of the way but loads of kids running around. A villa would be nice, it would be my preferred option anyway. My DD is 15 months, she will be 18 months when we make the move. DH will be primarily working from home, with a trip to the office now and again so location isnt too much of an issue. He prefers it suits me and DD rather than his work needs. Then again I still havent got a grasp on how big Dubai is.......so I could br completely off the mark.

I guess it all depends on the location in which your DH will be working and whether you want a villa or an apartment... then I'm sure lots of posters will offer great suggestions ;)

Me, my DH and DD are moving to Dubai in May, but are coming house hunting next week. We are in our late 20's and planning on more children in the very near future. I have only been to Dubai once so have no idea where to start looking for a home that is suitable for us and with good facilities and people in a similar situation. DH has been coming to Dubai for years but obviously always stays in hotels etc so he doesnt know the best places. Any advice?
