Could anyone please suggest what is an appropriate gift for a Doctor that we are realy happy with? I know it is not a standard practice, however he has cured my Mum after years of suffering and misdiagnosis from other doctors. He works in a private clinic and the treatment was not cheap, however he brought normality back in our lifes and we are so grateful. The Doctor is an arab , so I am not sure what is culturaly appropriate gift?. TIA

Its great a doctor here has made the difference, but I really wouldnt buy a high end present, they get paid enough Im sure, a thank you card to show gratitude should should do the trick. What laptops, watches!!!!!!!!!!! Oh come on!!!!

Wow, I just logged on since last evening and it was great to see so many replies. Thank you ladies for all the great suggestions! PS The only reason I added "cultural" was because back home was a common practice to give an expensive bottle of Champaigne coupled with a box of chocolates. This is obviously inappropriate here :) Thank you!

Actually I think culture is very important when it comes to gift-giving, as different cultures have such widely different customs. The things Katnip suggested are common types of gifts in this culture - but the other suggestions are all great too :). Alpha Mum, I think it's great that you are considering showing the doctor your appreciation, and brilliant to hear that your Mum's problems have been successfully treated :). I am sure he will be chuffed by whatever token of your appreciation you give.

What about a nice large flower arrangement delivered by a florist with a note from you?

As I said katnip, no offence intended but there is a difference between a gift to show appreciation of several years and pooling of funds to that of someone showing individual thanks. I hope I didn't make you uncomfortable - just expressing my views. Not at all, I just don't want the OP to feel pressured.

The laptop gift was a one time thing in a career spanning more than 35 years. The trainees were Emiratis and they'd pooled their money to buy that gift. Many afternoons my dad is perfectly happy talking about how verbally grateful his patients were after their sessions/treatments. So if a card or cookies is something you've thought of please go ahead. I'm kind of sorry I said anything tbh... Don t be sorry its an open forum :)

And here i was thinking to write down, how heartfelt thank you and a card expressing gratitude would be enough... wrong again.or naive. Not wrong or naive at all - it would mean more to me personally that someone took the time to write something.

Why not ask his nurse? She might know what would be appropriate and he might actually say, the fact he was able to do his job well was a gift in itself :). A lovely thank you note might just suffice.

I'm always amazed when suggestions for gifts are at the higher end of the scale, especially when talking about local people. No offence katnip but a watch as a traditional gift?! He must be treating some pretty well off people. I mean what on earth should his race or ethnic background have to do with the gift? A gift is a gift and surely anyone would welcome the thought someone else had put into getting them something? I know I would. I don't think you have to spend any more than you would on anyone else you would normally thank. How about a nice plant like a peace lily? As an Arab when I think of gifts I think high-end. That's just me. I understand not everyone is comfortable with that idea and I don't judge. It was just my personal opinion. :)

My dad is an Arab and a doctor (general surgeon). A bunch of interns he'd trained bought him a laptop... He was pretty happy about it, haha. Not saying you should go out and get him a laptop, though! Just running my mouth. A traditional gift would be a watch or perfume. Or any high-end electronic product. Or you could bake him a cake. I'm sure he'd be pleased either way.
